New generation vehicles: the impact of electric scooter trauma on the severity of facial fractures assessed by FISS score. A multicentre study.

With the increasing use of sustainable energy sources, the electric scooter has become a widely used vehicle. The aim of the study is to analyse the types of facial fracture related to road traffic accidents to outline the need for dedicated road rules. An observational, retrospective, multicentre study was carried out at the Maxillofacial Surgery Units of six Italian hospitals. Fifty patients (mean age was 34.76 years) from January 2020 to January 2024 were enrolled. The severity of trauma was evaluated by the Facial Injury Severity Scale (FISS) by Bagheri et al. Most of the accidents occurre

Management of refractured mandibular condyle after open reduction and internal fixation.

The purpose of the present case is to highlight the surgical management of the refractured condylar segment of the mandible after open reduction and internal fixation. A man in his 20s reported to the department with an alleged history of road traffic injury (RTI). He was diagnosed with a fracture of the right parasymphysis and left subcondylar region of the mandible. He was managed surgically using 2 mini plates of 2.0 mm in relation to the condyle, one 5-hole miniplate in relation to the posterior border of the mandible, one 3-hole miniplate in relation to the anterior border of the condyle.

The evolution of the modified osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis, its reliability, and long-term visual rehabilitation prognosis: An analytical review.

An exhaustive search of the world's literature was performed to analyze all case reports and series on the modified osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (MOOKP) published up to January 2022. The demographic profile, the primary indication for surgery, surgical technique variations, postoperative medical management, long-term functional and anatomical outcomes, and intra- and postoperative complications were analyzed and compared. Additionally, some of the authors' (GI, VP, and GA) unpublished MOOKP cases were studied. An extensive literature search yielded 37 case series and case reports. Overall, 95

Retromandibular transparotid approach for subcondylar mandibular fracture: A retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: The retromandibular transparotid approach provides the shortest and the most direct access to mandibular sub-condylar fractures. However, this approach is less preferred due to the fear of facial nerve injury. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and morbidity of the retromandibular transparotid approach for open reduction and internal fixation of sub-condylar mandibular fractures. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 29 patients with 35 sub-condylar mandibular fractures who underwent open reduction and internal fixation through the retromandibular transparotid a

Donor Site Morbidities of Iliac Crest Bone Graft in Craniofacial Surgery: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The iliac crest bone graft (ICBG) is criticized for high donor site morbidity. Recent research suggests this morbidity is related to the patient population for which the ICBG is harvested. This systematic review is the first to delineate the type and incidence of ICBG donor site complications in craniofacial surgery. METHODS: Two independent reviewers conducted a systematic review of multiple databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PEDRO, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) from 1917 to 2017. All studies utilizing the ICBG for craniofacial indications were included. Do

Is a black eye a useful sign of facial fractures in patients with minor head injuries? A retrospective analysis in a level I trauma centre over 10 years.

Orbital blunt trauma is common, and the diagnosis of a fracture should be made by computed tomographic (CT) scan. However, this will expose patients to ionising radiation. Our objective was to identify clinical predictors of orbital fracture, in particular the presence of a black eye, to minimise unnecessary exposure to radiation. A 10-year retrospective study was made of the medical records of all patients with minor head trauma who presented with one or two black eyes to our emergency department between May 2000 and April 2010. Each of the patients had a CT scan, was over 16 years old, and h

Persistent orodental pain, atypical odontalgia, and phantom tooth pain: when are they neuropathic disorders?

Patients with unrelenting pain in the teeth, gingival, palatal or alveolar tissues often see multiple dentists and have multiple irreversible procedures performed and still have their pain. Up to one-third of patients attending a chronic facial pain clinic have undergone prior irreversible dental procedures for their pain without success. In these cases, if no local source of infectious, inflammatory, or other pathology can be found, then the differential diagnosis must include a focal neuropathic pain disorder. The common diagnoses given include the terms atypical odontalgia, persistent orode

Rare Invasive Fusarium Sinusitis in a Transiently Immunosuppressed Patient.

A Florida cattle rancher undergoing treatment for lumbar osteomyelitis presented with severe neutropenia and febrile episodes after being discharged on a seven-week course of intravenous (IV) vancomycin and cefepime. Upon admission, antibiotics were changed, and micafungin and filgrastim were added. Several days later, he had a normalizing absolute neutrophil count (ANC) and improving fevers with an overall good clinical appearance. Discharge seemed near, but he continued to complain of nasal congestion and mild oromaxillary pain. In caution, a CT maxillofacial scan and ENT evaluation were per

Systematic scoping review of mandibular bone tissue engineering.

Tissue engineering is a promising alternative that may facilitate bony regeneration in small defects in compromised host tissue as well as large mandibular defects. This scoping systematic review was therefore designed to assess in vivo research on its use in the reconstruction of mandibular defects in animal models. A total of 4524 articles were initially retrieved using the search algorithm. After screening of the titles and abstracts, 269 full texts were retrieved, and a total of 72 studies included. Just two of the included studies employed osteonecrosis as the model of mandibular injury.

Zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures and their association with naso-orbito-ethmoid fractures: a 5-year review.

BACKGROUND: Zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures associated with ipsilateral naso-orbito-ethmoidal fractures are more complex injuries than isolated zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures. This injury pattern can have significant long-term morbidity if not recognized and treated appropriately during the initial operation. The purpose of this study is to compare mechanisms of injury, treatment, and outcome between patients with zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures and those with zygomaticomaxillary complex and ipsilateral naso-orbito-ethmoidal fractures. METHODS: A 5-year retrospective review

Reconstruction of midface bone defects with vitallium micromesh.

Complex midface defects following trauma and tumor resection present a challenging problem for maxillofacial surgeons. Regardless of the cause of these defects, restoration of accurate contour is essential to achieve both proper function and cosmetically acceptable appearance. Traditionally, bone grafts have been the preferred method of reconstruction. We present the first report of the use of Vitallium micromesh in reconstruction of midface bone and cartilaginous defects in 3 patients. In 1 patient, bone loss resulted from trauma; in the other 2, loss was due to tumor resection. In all 3 pati
