Mechanisms of Change Within a Short Psychological Intervention for Children With Eating Disorders (SPICE): A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing numbers of young people (YP) are seeking support for eating disorders, creating a growing unmet need for timely and accessible treatment. While guided self-help (GSH) interventions have demonstrated effectiveness for other youth mental health difficulties, options for eating disorders remain limited. SPICE (Short Psychological Intervention for Children with Eating Disorders), a transdiagnostic CBT-based GSH program, was developed to address this gap. This qualitative study explored participant perspectives on the mechanisms through which SPICE may support recovery. METHO

Health Qigong engagement scale and wellbeing in Chinese older adults.

BACKGROUND: China's population is aging. Psychological wellbeing describes positive psychological functioning, including self-acceptance, purpose in life, personal growth, positive relationships, autonomy, and the ability to manage daily life. Health Qigong is a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise that combines movement, breathing, and mental focus. However, no specific tool is available to assess how regularly, attentively, and independently older adults engage in Health Qigong. This study developed such a tool and examined its associations with resilience, perceived social support, and ps

Characterizing Infectious Disease Mortality in Severe Mental Illness: A Retrospective Matched Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness (SMI) are at an increased risk of infection mortality compared to the general population. Little is known about how this risk might differ across infection types, and the potential impact of sociodemographic and clinical factors. We investigated associations between SMI and infection mortality in a population-based cohort, examining variation by infection type and potential moderating factors. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective matched cohort study (January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2019) used national primary care data from the UK Clinical Practice R

Argentinean validation of the Early Trauma Inventory-Self-Report (ETI-SR) in an adult sample.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences affect long-term mental and physical health. In Argentina, the lack of validated tools limits accurate assessment of early trauma and hinders prevention strategies. This study adapted and validated the Early Trauma Inventory-Self-Report Short Form for Argentine adults and provided an initial standardized estimate of early trauma prevalence. METHOD: A total of 418 Argentine adults (M = 30.6, SD = 10.1; 74.4% female) completed the Early Trauma Inventory-Self-Report Short Form through web-based data collection. Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted

Pathways to inclusion: A scoping review exploring equity, diversity, and inclusion in mental health and addictions patient navigation programs.

Mental health and addictions (MHA) patient navigation programs have gained traction in recent years, helping clients overcome barriers and access suitable resources. Equity-deserving communities (EDCs) continue to experience significant disparities in MHA outcomes, due to additional systemic barriers to care. This scoping review explores the approaches and practices utilized by MHA patient navigation programs to support the unique needs of EDCs. A search was conducted in four electronic databases. Articles were required to be focused on MHA patient navigation services and EDCs (including low-i

Integrating Psychiatric and Hospice Services: Legal and Clinical Considerations for Involuntary Commitment in Multimorbid End-of-Life Care.

Multimorbid patients at the end-of-life face complex medical, psychosocial, and psychiatric challenges. Hospice care aims to address physical, emotional, and spiritual needs; however, psychiatric comorbidities, particularly acute crises, remain under-recognized and inconsistently managed. The intersection of psychiatric intervention, hospice care, and legal frameworks such as involuntary commitment presents significant clinical and ethical challenges. We describe a 76-year-old male with multiple chronic conditions, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, gast

[Diabetes education and counseling in adult patients with diabetes (Update 2026)].

Diabetes education and self-management play a critical role in diabetes care. Individualized patient empowerment aims to actively influence the course of the disease by self-monitoring and subsequent treatment modification, while enabling those affected to integrate diabetes management into their daily routine and adapt it to their lifestyle situation. Diabetes education must be accessible to all patients. Preventive measures in the prediabetic status are of additional value. In order to be able to provide a structured and validated education program, adequate personnel, rooms/facilities, orga

Associations of gait speed, grip strength, depressive symptoms, and their combinations with fracture risk in older adults.

Gait speed, grip strength, and depression are common and often coexist in older adults, and their interaction may provide a comprehensive understanding of fracture risk. This study examined the individual and combined associations of slow gait, weak grip, and depressive symptoms with the risk of fractures in older adults. Sixteen thousand three hundred fifty-seven Australian participants aged ≥ 70 years from the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) trial were included. Sub-distribution hazard ratios (sHR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using a multivariable-adju

From Training to Practice: The Influence of Education and Training on Attitudes Towards Psychotherapy Among Psychiatry Residents and Early-Career Psychiatrists.

OBJECTIVE: Despite guideline recommendations and growing evidence for psychotherapies across mental disorders, in recent years, an underutilization of psychotherapy was observed in the field of psychiatry. The authors conducted a nationwide survey investigating how education and training shape attitudes toward psychotherapy among Italian psychiatry residents and early-career psychiatrists. METHODS: An anonymous online questionnaire (April-September 2023) investigated sociodemographics, psychotherapy training (psychiatric residency and private schools), supervision and personal therapy, self-a

Evaluator standpoint and ecological context shape psychological momentum measurement in sport.

Psychological momentum (PM) has been widely discussed in sport psychology, yet the term has been used to describe different levels of evidence, including objective performance sequences, observer judgments, retrospective reconstructions, simulated experiences, and real-time reports from athletes. This conceptual ambiguity makes it difficult to determine whether previous studies have examined the same construct, different components of a broader PM process, or related but distinct phenomena. The present conceptual analysis clarifies how PM-related evidence has been obtained in sport research an

Differences in psychological well-being, physical activity, and perception of the value of physical education among Italian middle and high school teachers: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Research shows that teachers with high self-efficacy and emotional stability are better able to manage lessons, respond to student behavior, and apply proactive, student-centered approaches. In addition, teachers' emotional well-being enhances their teaching effectiveness and has a positive impact on students' perceptions of their competence, with positive emotions increasing student satisfaction and engagement. In this study, we want to examine the perception that middle and high school physical education teachers have of the importance of physical education, as well as their leve

Biopsychosocial correlates of resting and stress-reactive salivary GDF15: preliminary findings.

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a biomarker of energetic stress related to aging, disease, and mitochondrial defects. We recently showed that GDF15 is quantifiable in saliva and acutely inducible by psychosocial stress. To date, the associations between GDF15 and biopsychosocial factors and individual characteristics remain unknown. Here, in a sample of healthy working adults (n = 198, 70 % females), we first confirmed that salivary GDF15 reacts to acute psychosocial stress, peaking 10 min following a socio-evaluative stress paradigm (+28.3 %, g = 0.50, p < 0.0001). We then explore

Abortion and contraception within prison health care: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Although abortion was completely decriminalized in Canada 36 years ago, barriers to pregnancy prevention and termination persist across the country, such as travel and information gaps. Research demonstrates incarcerated people face barriers to family planning care, yet there is no systematic data collection of sexual and reproductive health experiences and outcomes among incarcerated people in Canada. The aim of this study was to explore family planning care experiences among women and gender diverse people who have experienced incarceration in Canada. METHODS: We conducted a qua

Reproductive decision-making for Barth syndrome carriers: Unexplored complexities.

Reproductive decision-making is a complex process, especially for carriers of a pathogenic X-linked genetic variant. Studies of X-linked carriers have identified various personal values and concerns that influence reproductive decisions, but these studies provide limited insight into decisional conflict during the reproductive decision-making process. This study aims to explore how carriers of variants known to cause Barth syndrome, a rare X-linked disorder, navigate and experience decisional conflict during reproductive decision-making. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 27 Barth

Genetic markers of stress, resilience and success at an elite military selection course.

To qualify for training as elite U.S. Army Special Forces (SF) soldiers, candidates must complete the extremely stressful 19-20 day Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) course. At SFAS, soldiers must excel at stressful cognitive and physical challenges including team problem solving, foreign language testing, land navigation, timed loaded road marches, timed runs, and challenging obstacle courses. Approximately 70 % of soldiers who attempt SFAS fail. To investigate genetic factors associated with cognitive and physiological biomarkers of resilience and success at SFAS, single nucleot

It Is Not Always Metastasis: A Case Report of a Primary Nervous System Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma and the Relevance of Brain Biopsy.

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is an uncommon, extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma confined to the brain, spinal cord, leptomeninges, or eyes. Most cases are diffuse large B-cell lymphomas; anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) in the central nervous system (CNS) is exceptional. We report an immunocompetent 63-year-old man with 3 months of intermittent bilateral pulsatile headaches who developed a focal seizure that secondarily generalized. He was started on levetiracetam for a first-time seizure and discharged. Outpatient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) subsequently revealed a b

Factors affecting psychological resilience, self-efficacy and job satisfaction of nurse academics: A cross-sectional study.

AIM: The study aimed to determine the factors affecting psychological resilience, self-efficacy and job satisfaction in nurse academics. BACKGROUND: Nurse academics follow an emotionally and mentally intense career path, along which they are required to balance many different roles and responsibilities, including teaching, research and guidance. However, in some cases, this equilibrium is disrupted and may cause functional disruptions; in achieving this balance, resilience, self-efficacy and job satisfaction play important roles. METHODS: The data of this cross-sectional study were collected

Ectopic pregnancy, its potential links to dementia risk and interactions with depression: insights from a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dementia poses a growing global mental health impact, with variations in prevalence by gender, possibly influenced by reproductive factors. Ectopic pregnancy (EP), known for its association with cardiovascular diseases and depression, which are also predictors of dementia, prompted an exploration of their interplay. METHODS: Using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, this nationwide cohort study examined 53,096 individuals to investigate the link between EP and dementia. Covariates included age, insured premiums, comorbidity by Charlson Comorbidity Index revised b

Examining chronic disease onset across varying age groups of Indian adults using competing risk analysis.

In low-and-middle-income countries, people develop chronic diseases at a younger age, leading to health-and-economic loss. Estimates of the age of onset of chronic disease provide evidence for policy intervention, but in the Indian context, evidence is limited. The present study aims to explore the onset of seven chronic diseases across adults and the elderly, along with the prognostic factors of chronic disease onset. Using Wave 1 data of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), we estimated the statistical distributions, the median age at onset, and Loglogistic and Weibull accelerated
