Accuracy and Readability of Kidney Stone Patient Information Materials Generated by a Large Language Model Compared to Official Urologic Organizations.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the readability and accuracy of large language model generated patient information materials (PIMs) to those supplied by the American Urological Association (AUA), Canadian Urological Association (CUA), and European Association of Urology (EAU) for kidney stones. METHODS: PIMs from AUA, CUA, and EAU related to nephrolithiasis were obtained and categorized. The most frequent patient questions related to kidney stones were identified from an internet query and input into GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. PIMs and ChatGPT outputs were assessed for accuracy and readability using previously

Methods guiding stakeholder engagement in planning a pragmatic study on changing stroke systems of care.

BACKGROUND: The Comprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services (COMPASS) Study is one of the first large pragmatic randomized-controlled clinical trials using comparative effectiveness research methods, funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. In the COMPASS Study, we compare the effectiveness of a patient-centered, transitional care intervention versus usual care for stroke patients discharged home from acute care. Outcomes include stroke patient post-discharge functional status and caregiver strain 90 days after discharge, and hospital readmissions. A central tenet of Patient-Ce

Functional morphology of the Alligator mississippiensis larynx with implications for vocal production.

Sauropsid vocalization is mediated by the syrinx in birds and the larynx in extant reptiles; but whereas avian vocal production has received much attention, the vocal mechanism of basal reptilians is poorly understood. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) displays a large vocal repertoire during mating and in parent-offspring interactions. Although vocal outputs of these behaviors have received some attention, the underlying mechanism of sound production remains speculative. Here, we investigate the laryngeal anatomy of juvenile and adult animals by macroscopic and histological

Is it the time to rethink clinical decision-making strategies? From a single clinical outcome evaluation to a Clinical Multi-criteria Decision Assessment (CMDA).

There are plenty of different clinical, organizational and economic parameters to consider in order having a complete assessment of the total impact of a pharmaceutical treatment. In the attempt to follow, a holistic approach aimed to provide an evaluation embracing all clinical parameters in order to choose the best treatments, it is necessary to compare and weight multiple criteria. Therefore, a change is required: we need to move from a decision-making context based on the assessment of one single criteria towards a transparent and systematic framework enabling decision makers to assess all

Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced Early Warning Systems for Early Detection of Clinical Deterioration in Hospitalized Patients: Current Clinical Applications and Future Directions.

Early recognition of clinical deterioration in hospitalized patients is essential for preventing adverse events such as cardiac arrest, sepsis, respiratory failure and unplanned intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Traditional Early Warning Systems (EWS), including the Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) and National Early Warning Score (NEWS), are widely used to support bedside assessment through standardized evaluation of physiological parameters. However, conventional EWS are limited by intermittent monitoring, manual data entry and variable clinical interpretation. Recent advances in elect

Agreement between artificial intelligence and expert evaluation in assessing the quality of asthma health education videos on YouTube and Bilibili: cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Online video platforms such as YouTube and Bilibili have become important sources of health information for the public. However, the quality and reliability of online health education videos vary substantially. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), has recently shown potential for automated evaluation of health information, yet evidence regarding the agreement between AI-based and expert evaluations remains limited. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze asthma-related health education videos retrieved from YouTube and Bilibili

Chronotherapy shortens hospitalization for bipolar depression: a single-center replication across three decades (1994-2024).

BACKGROUND: Chronotherapeutic interventions have been proposed as non-pharmacological strategies for the rapid modulation of depressive symptoms in bipolar disorder. Total sleep deprivation (TSD) may induce short-term mood improvements, and morning bright light therapy (BLT) has been suggested to help stabilize these effects. However, the impact of these interventions on service-level outcomes, including length of hospital stay (LOS), has not been systematically evaluated. METHODS: We analyzed two non-overlapping retrospective cohorts (1994-1998 and 2015-2024) from the same Mood Disorders Uni

ePA4all-Exploring facilitators and barriers to the adoption of the electronic health record in Germany: A study protocol for a mixed-methods analysis.

BACKGROUND: This manuscript presents the study protocol for a planned mixed-methods study on the transition to an opt-out approach for the electronic health record (elektronische Patientenakte, ePA) in Germany in 2025. This change represents a paradigm shift in the healthcare system and aims to promote broad adoption. While the ePA has the potential to improve cross-sectoral care and patient empowerment, structural and individual barriers may hinder successful implementation. Understanding these factors is crucial to developing strategies for effective integration and long-term utilization of

Assisted home hemodialysis in Spain: findings from a national survey on implementation, barriers, and challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Assisted home hemodialysis (assisted HHD) has emerged as a strategy to expand access to home-based dialysis therapies in patients with chronic kidney disease who have functional limitations or difficulties performing the technique independently. However, data on its real-world implementation in Spain and on the profile of caregivers involved remain limited. METHODS: A national, structured, and anonymous survey was conducted under the auspices of the Home Hemodialysis Working Group of the Spanish Society of Nephrology. The survey was addressed to all home hemodialysis units in Sp

Experiences with a Shared Position Between Specialized and Basic Palliative Care: A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVES: To strengthen palliative care trajectories and enhance nursing competencies, it may be both relevant and beneficial to establish shared nursing positions between specialized and basic inpatient palliative care units. Despite the potential advantages, little is known about how such shared positions are experienced in practice. The aim of the study is to explore and describe experiences with a shared nursing position between a specialized palliative care unit and a basic palliative care unit. METHODS: Field notes and qualitative interviews were conducted in 2021 with a specialized p

Shaping the Future: Recommendations from a Palliative Social Work Summit-A National Call to Action.

BACKGROUND: Palliative social workers play a critical role in serious illness care by addressing the biopsychosocial, spiritual, existential, and cultural needs of patients and families. Despite substantial professional infrastructure and contributions to equity and person-centered care, the profession faces persistent challenges related to recognition, funding, and visibility. These challenges are intensified by widening health inequities, policy threats to access to care, and national workforce shortages. METHODS: To assess the current landscape and advance a coordinated professional agenda

School Fairness as a Bullying Victimization Protective Factor: Structure or Personality?

Recent research finds students' perceived school fairness to be a protective factor against bullying. These findings are consistent with organizational research suggesting organizations and states characterized by more procedural justice have less rule-breaking in their membership. The rationale in extant research is based on structural arguments about the nature of the organization or state, but the research overwhelmingly measures perceived fairness as an individual characteristic. This approach creates omitted variable bias via the personality trait of agreeableness, which has a robust nega

Protocol for a cohort comparison treatment study evaluating the efficacy of a dimensional adaptation of GPM (GPM-extended) compared to a classic outpatient GPM treatment for patient fulfilling criteria for BPD: the EPSYLIA project.

UNLABELLED: Personality disorders (PD) are common and debilitating psychiatric conditions, often characterized by severe interpersonal and self-dysfunction. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is the most studied PD, with treatments like Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) demonstrating effectiveness. To address the current state of the personality disorder field, where most evidence-based treatments have been developed using a categorical approach, while the most empirically supported approach is the dimensional one, we developed an adaptation of GPM (GPM-extended) integrating concepts of dim

Human resource digital risk management and sustainable work-life balance in digital work environments: examining the sequential roles of mindful technology use and techno-boundary crafting.

INTRODUCTION: As economies modernize rapidly, digital transformation has changed the nature of work itself-often faster than employees can psychologically and socially adjust to it. This study looks at how Human Resource Digital Risk Management (HRDRM) supports Sustainable Work-Life Balance (SWLB) among Saudi knowledge workers, and specifically how this happens through a two-step behavioral process: first Mindful Technology Use (MTU), then Techno-Boundary Crafting (TBC). METHODS: We surveyed 665 knowledge workers across three sectors in Saudi Arabia-IT and technology services, banking and fin

From consultation to choice: gynecologic cancer patients' perspectives on shared decision making in clinical practice - findings from a cross-sectional observational qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision making (SDM) is a cornerstone of patient-centered care in oncology, yet its implementation remains inconsistent across clinical contexts. Particularly in gynecologic oncology, where treatment choices often carry profound implications for identity, fertility and quality of life, understanding how patients engage in SDM is crucial. Patient autonomy, understood as the capacity and right to participate meaningfully in medical decisions, is central to this process, yet remains complex and context-dependent. OBJECTIVE: This study explores how women with gynecologic cancer
