A comprehensive analysis of non-pharmaceutical interventions and vaccination on Ebolavirus disease outbreak: Stochastic modeling approach.

Ebolavirus disease (EVD) outbreaks have intermittently occurred since the first documented case in the 1970s. Due to its transmission characteristics, large outbreaks have not been observed outside Africa. However, within the continent, significant outbreaks have been attributed to factors such as endemic diseases with similar symptoms and inadequate medical infrastructure, which complicate timely diagnosis. In this study, we employed a stochastic modeling approach to analyze the spread of EVD during the early stages of an outbreak, with an emphasis on inherent risks. We developed a model that

Unified topological inference for brain networks in temporal lobe epilepsy using the Wasserstein distance.

Persistent homology offers a powerful tool for extracting hidden topological signals from brain networks. It captures the evolution of topological structures across multiple scales, known as filtrations, thereby revealing topological features that persist over these scales. These features are summarized in persistence diagrams, and their dissimilarity is quantified using the Wasserstein distance. However, the Wasserstein distance does not follow a known distribution, posing challenges for the application of existing parametric statistical models. To tackle this issue, we introduce a unified to

Clinical prediction models and risk tools for early detection of patients at risk of surgical site infection and surgical wound dehiscence: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Despite advances in surgical techniques, intraoperative practice and a plethora of advanced wound therapies, surgical wound complications (SWCs), such as surgical site infection (SSI) and surgical wound dehiscence (SWD), continue to pose a considerable burden to the patient and healthcare setting. Predicting those patients at risk of a SWC may give patients and healthcare providers the opportunity to implement a tailored prevention plan or potentially ameliorate known risk factors to improve patient postoperative outcomes. METHOD: A scoping review of the literature for studies whic

Correlation of Dengue and Meteorological Factors in Bangladesh: A Public Health Concern.

Dengue virus (DENV) is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus, a member of the Flaviviridae family (which causes Dengue fever), and an arthropod-transmitted human viral infection. Bangladesh is well known for having some of Asia's most vulnerable Dengue outbreaks, with climate change, its location, and it's dense population serving as the main contributors. For speculation about DENV outbreak characteristics, it is crucial to determine how meteorological factors correlate with the number of cases. This study used five time series models to observe the trend and forecast Dengue cases. Current

Spatial correlated incidence modeling with zero inflation.

Disease mapping models have been popularly used to model disease incidence with spatial correlation. In disease mapping models, zero inflation is an important issue, which often occurs in disease incidence datasets with high proportions of zero disease count. It is originated from limited survey coverage or unadvanced testing equipment, which makes some regions have no observed patients. Then excessive zeros recorded in the disease incidence dataset would mess up the true distributions of disease incidence and lead to inaccurate estimates. To address this issue, a zero-inflated disease mapping

Exploring trade-offs in treatment planning for brain tumor cases with a probabilistic definition of the clinical target volume.

PURPOSE: This study demonstrates how a novel probabilistic clinical target volume (CTV) concept-the clinical target distribution (CTD)-can be used to navigate the trade-off between target coverage and organ sparing with a semi-interactive treatment planning approach. METHODS: Two probabilistic treatment planning methods are presented that use tumor probabilities to balance tumor control with organ-at-risk (OAR) sparing. The first method explores OAR dose reduction by systematically discarding x % $x\%$ of CTD voxels with an unfavorable dose-to-probability ratio from the minimum dose coverag

Health and economic burden due to alcohol-associated liver diseases in the Union Territory of Delhi: A Markov probabilistic model approach.

BACKGROUND: Nearly one-fifth of all deaths attributable to alcohol are due to liver diseases. METHODS: The study employs a Markov Probabilistic Modeling approach considering various clinical spectrum of alcohol-associated liver diseases (ALD), to gauge the health and economic burden due to ALD for the national capital territory of Delhi, from March 2017 to February 2018. The health impact was estimated through Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), years of life lost (YLL), and total deaths due to ALD. The economic burden of ALD was assessed assuming the current health-seeking preferences an

Artificial and human intelligence for early identification of neonatal sepsis.

Artificial intelligence may have a role in the early detection of sepsis in neonates. Machine learning can identify patterns that predict high or increasing risk for clinical deterioration from a sepsis-like illness. In developing this potential addition to NICU care, careful consideration should be given to the data and methods used to develop, validate, and evaluate prediction models. When an AI system alerts clinicians to a change in a patient's condition that warrants a bedside evaluation, human intelligence and experience come into play to determine an appropriate course of action: evalua

Development and comparison of predictive models for sexually transmitted diseases-AIDS, gonorrhea, and syphilis in China, 2011-2021.

BACKGROUND: Accurate incidence prediction of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is critical for early prevention and better government strategic planning. In this paper, four different forecasting models were presented to predict the incidence of AIDS, gonorrhea, and syphilis. METHODS: The annual percentage changes in the incidence of AIDS, gonorrhea, and syphilis were estimated by using joinpoint regression. The performance of four methods, namely, the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, Elman neural network (ERNN) model, ARIMA-ERNN hybrid model and long short-term memo

Two effective clinical prediction models to screen for obstructive sleep apnoea based on body mass index and other parameters.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) relies on polysomnography which is time-consuming and expensive. We therefore aimed to develop two simple, non-invasive models to screen adults for OSA. METHODS: The effectiveness of using body mass index (BMI) and a new visual prediction model to screen for OSA was evaluated using a development set (1769 participants) and confirmed using an independent validation set (642 participants). RESULTS: Based on the development set, the best BMI cut-off value for diagnosing OSA was 26.45 kg/m2, with an area under the curve (AU

Using prediction polling to harness collective intelligence for disease forecasting.

BACKGROUND: The global spread of COVID-19 has shown that reliable forecasting of public health related outcomes is important but lacking. METHODS: We report the results of the first large-scale, long-term experiment in crowd-forecasting of infectious-disease outbreaks, where a total of 562 volunteer participants competed over 15 months to make forecasts on 61 questions with a total of 217 possible answers regarding 19 diseases. RESULTS: Consistent with the "wisdom of crowds" phenomenon, we found that crowd forecasts aggregated using best-practice adaptive algorithms are well-calibrated, accu

Robust joint modelling of longitudinal and survival data: Incorporating a time-varying degrees-of-freedom parameter.

Monitoring of individual biomarkers has the potential of explaining the hazard of survival outcomes. In practice, these measurements are intermittently observed and are known to be subject to substantial measurement error. Joint modelling of longitudinal and survival data enables us to associate intermittently measured error-prone biomarkers with risks of survival outcomes and thus plays an important role in the analysis of medical data. Most of the joint models available in the literature have been built on the Gaussian assumption. This makes them sensitive to outliers. In this work, we study

Hepatitis C treatment strategies in prisons: A cost-effectiveness analysis.

In Australian prisons approximately 20% of inmates are chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), providing an important population for targeted treatment and prevention. A dynamic mathematical model of HCV transmission was used to assess the impact of increasing direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment uptake on HCV incidence and prevalence in the prisons in New South Wales, Australia, and to assess the cost-effectiveness of alternate treatment strategies. We developed four separate models reflecting different average prison lengths of stay (LOS) of 2, 6, 24, and 36 months. Each model

Probabilistic seasonal dengue forecasting in Vietnam: A modelling study using superensembles.

BACKGROUND: With enough advanced notice, dengue outbreaks can be mitigated. As a climate-sensitive disease, environmental conditions and past patterns of dengue can be used to make predictions about future outbreak risk. These predictions improve public health planning and decision-making to ultimately reduce the burden of disease. Past approaches to dengue forecasting have used seasonal climate forecasts, but the predictive ability of a system using different lead times in a year-round prediction system has been seldom explored. Moreover, the transition from theoretical to operational systems

The effect of enrofloxacin on enteric Escherichia coli: Fitting a mathematical model to in vivo data.

Antimicrobial drugs administered systemically may cause the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance among enteric bacteria. To develop logical, research-based recommendations for food animal veterinarians, we must understand how to maximize antimicrobial drug efficacy while minimizing risk of antimicrobial resistance. Our objective is to evaluate the effect of two approved dosing regimens of enrofloxacin (a single high dose or three low doses) on Escherichia coli in cattle. We look specifically at bacteria above and below the epidemiological cutoff (ECOFF), above which the bact

The Estimation of Transmitted Drug Resistance Mutation Strains Probability in the Treatment of HIV Using the Beta-Binomial Model.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a viral infection that destroys the human immune system resulting in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The Zambia HIV prevalence rate (11.3%) remains among the highest in the sub-Saharan Africa. In the treatment of HIV-naive patients, a problem that relates to the transmitted drug resistance mutation strains (TDRMs) occurs in the administration of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. To address this problem, we propose the use of transition probabilities when prescribing a switch from the first-line to the second-line or to the third-line regimen on th

External validation of the SOX-PTS score in a prospective multicenter trial of patients with proximal deep vein thrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Using data from the SOX Trial, we recently developed a clinical prediction model for occurrence of the postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) after proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT), termed the SOX-PTS score. The score includes anatomical extent of DVT; body mass index; and baseline Villalta score. OBJECTIVE: To externally validate the SOX-PTS score. METHODS: Logistic regression analysis of data from the ATTRACT Trial that evaluated pharmacomechanical catheter directed thrombolysis in patients with proximal DVT. The primary outcome was the occurrence of PTS (defined as Villalta score ≥

State-level tracking of COVID-19 in the United States.

As of 1st June 2020, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported 104,232 confirmed or probable COVID-19-related deaths in the US. This was more than twice the number of deaths reported in the next most severely impacted country. We jointly model the US epidemic at the state-level, using publicly available death data within a Bayesian hierarchical semi-mechanistic framework. For each state, we estimate the number of individuals that have been infected, the number of individuals that are currently infectious and the time-varying reproduction number (the average number of secondary

Bi-level feature selection in high dimensional AFT models with applications to a genomic study.

We propose a new bi-level feature selection method for high dimensional accelerated failure time models by formulating the models to a single index model. The method yields sparse solutions at both the group and individual feature levels along with an expedient algorithm, which is computationally efficient and easily implemented. We analyze a genomic dataset for an illustration, and present a simulation study to show the finite sample performance of the proposed method.
