Between March 1978 and March 1989, 419 patients with 439 moderately advanced or advanced primary squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck received treatment with curative intent with twice-a-day radiotherapy (120 cGy per fraction with a 4- to 6-hour interfraction interval). Primary cervical ganglioneuroblastoma is rare and reports of its subtypes are limited. This case series describes two pediatric patients with the nodular subtype of primary cervical ganglioneuroblastoma with lymphatic spread. Clinical course, diagnosis, and management of this rare tumor are discussed with emphasis on the importance of including neuroblastic tumors in the differential diagnosis of pediatric neck masses. We also report the use of nerve monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve as a surrogate for the vagus nerve during a pediatric neck dissection.

An 82-year-old woman presented with a painless, progressively enlarging right neck mass of 2 years' duration. CT with contrast showed a 5.0 cm confluence of nodes just inferior to the right parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration showed a lymphoproliferative disorder. Incisional biopsy showed sebaceous lymphadenoma. She subsequently underwent superficial right parotidectomy with neck dissection of level II-V (performed for enlarged lymph nodes causing significant pain). Facial nerve was preserved. She remained free of disease nearly 1 year postoperatively.

We report the case of a young woman who presented with progressive dysphagia and swelling in the anterior aspect of the neck of short duration. On evaluation, she was diagnosed with amelanotic malignant melanoma of the cervical oesophagus. She underwent total laryngopharyngo-oesophagectomy with gastric transposition with bilateral modified radical neck dissection with feeding jejunostomy and a permanent tracheostomy with postoperative combined chemoradiation therapy. However, in spite of aggressive treatment, the patient expired 8 months after initial presentation with distant metastasis.

Ectopic thyroid glands generally occur in the midline as a result of abnormal median migration. The presence of these ectopic glands, lateral to the midline is rare. Here, the authors present one case of papillary carcinoma of thyroid arising from an ectopic thyroid tissue in branchial cleft cyst presented as a swelling in lateral neck diagnosed after cystectomy. Total thyroidectomy and neck dissection were done to rule out occult primary carcinoma of thyroid. Histopathology report showed thyroid and lymph nodes were normal.

PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old male patient presented to the emergency department (ED) with left sided headache, radiating to the left ear while also complaining of dizziness. A non-contrast CT brain, performed during a previous presentation five days earlier, was normal. On his second presentation, the patient displayed clinical signs of carotid artery dissection including left sided partial Horner's syndrome.

Carotid and vertebral artery dissection is a rarely reported cause of stroke in childhood and adolescence, especially if there is not a direct trauma to the neck. Four patients, under 15 years of age, presented with an internal carotid artery dissection, and one patient presented with a vertebral artery dissection.
