Epidural application of autologous nucleus pulposus in pigs, without mechanical nerve root compression, induced a pronounced reduction in nerve conduction velocity in the cauda equina nerve roots after 1-7 days, compared to epidural application of retroperitoneal fat in control experiments. Histologically, the nerve fiber injury was more pronounced after application of nucleus pulposus than after control tissue application. The concept and even the reality of Senator neuromyositis are discussed. One case is reported confirming its reality. The diagnosis is based on clinical signs (polymyositis and peripheric neuropathy), biological (muscular enzymes increase) and electrophysiological disturbances (myogenic syndrome, decrease of nerve conduction velocities), and histological lesions (polymyositis and denervation). The association with a Hashimoto thyroiditis could support the hypothesis of an autoimmune mechanism in the neuromyositis pathogenesis.

Fifty-four patients with suprascapular nerve entrapment were evaluated on an average of 5.6 years (range, 2-9 years) after surgical release. There were 32 males and 22 females. Supposed causative factor was exertion at work or vacation in 36 cases. Sixteen patients had an atrophy of the supraspinatus and 26 of the infraspinatus muscle. Conduction time to the supraspinatus muscle was 4.5 ms (range, 2.2-14.4 ms), and to the infraspinatus, 8.6 ms (range, 2.5-43.6 ms). A 61-year-old man, who suffered from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) for 44 years, was evaluated for the respiratory disorder. He had diaphragmatic dysfunction induced by phrenic nerve disturbance. In this patient, central type apnea and hypopnea related to diaphragmatic weakness occurred during REM sleep, which induced accessory inspiratory muscle inhibition. Respiratory muscle dysfunction had not been generally recognized in CMT until recently, but its significance should be emphasized.

We have carried out a long-term study of lesions found in a man who had a demyelinating disease of both central and peripheral nervous systems. During the 10 years of his clinical course, he suffered from optic neuritis, multifocal myelitis, and chronic multifocal demyelinating neuropathy, with persistent conduction block. Many women presenting with symptoms of bladder dysfunction relate their onset to the operation of simple hysterectomy. This study reviews the urodynamic findings in 126 women who had a simple hysterectomy, of whom 25 also had sacral reflex latencies measured. The results show that 47.0% had detrusor instability, 36.7% had urethral obstruction, and 24.8% stress incontinence. These findings are statistically significant when compared to controls. 80% of the women who underwent measurement of sacral reflex latencies had evidence of nerve conduction abnormality.

We describe a patient with chronic multifocal demyelinating neuropathy associated with persistent conduction block. Multifascicular lesions in sural nerve included a complete loss of myelinated fibers, demyelination, remyelination, onion bulb formation, and axonal attenuation. On the basis of these morphometric results we hypothesize that nerve ischemia may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic multifocal demyelinating neuropathy.

Workers using vibrating tools are exposed to vascular and nervous symptoms called vibration syndrome (VS); moreover, the same subjects show increased prevalence of possible carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
