Lymphomatoid granulomatosis: pathogenesis, pathology and clinical implications.

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LG) exhibits many similarities both clinically and pathologically to angiocentric T/NK cell lymphoma and was until recently considered to be part of the same disease spectrum. However, recent data indicate that LG is an EBV positive B cell proliferation associated with an exuberant T cell reaction. LG presents in extranodal sites, most commonly the lung (Katzenstein and Peiper, 1990). Other frequent sites of involvement include kidney, skin, central nervous system and liver. The pattern of necrosis in both LG and T/NK cell lymphoma is very similar, emphasizing the

Molecular and cellular pathology of Meniere's disease.

The etiopathogenesis of Meniere's disease has remained controversial since the early 1900s. Many investigators have studied the molecular and cellular pathology of the inner ear in patients with this disorder. Three basic pathologic mechanisms have emerged; fibrosis of the endolymphatic sac and vestibular epithelia, altered glycoprotein metabolism, and immune-mediated inner ear disease. This article reviews the current understanding of these three basic pathologic processes.

Lung pathology in high-altitude pulmonary edema.

Autopsy findings in 10 cases of high-altitude pulmonary edema have been collected from published articles and personal observations. All cases were males with a mean age of 37 years (22-62). The altitude of occurrence was from 8400 to 17 500 feet. The mean combined lung weight in nine cases was 1682 g (1200-3000 g). Cerebral edema was present in five of eight cases. The most frequency pulmonary findings in addition to diffuse edema consisted of leukocyte infiltrates, alveolar hemorrhages, thrombi in small pulmonary arteries, and alveolar hyaline membranes. Pulmonary infarction was present in o

Cellular immune response and pathology in schistosomiasis.

In the present review, some aspects of the cellular response following the murine Schistosoma mansoni infection are described. Due to the peculiar route used by the schistosome to infect its definitive host, the skin appears as a critical site in which the initial events of the host/parasite relationship occur and where the immune response is initiated. Moreover, the induction and the modulation of the granuloma formation, which represent the main aspect of the pathology of this parasitic disease, is under the control of several cellular populations n which CD4 and CD8 T cells play a key role.…

Magnetic resonance imaging assessment of labyrinthine pathology.

Membranous labyrinth pathologies are quite rare. They were until recently difficult to demonstrate by imaging technics, CT being the modality of choice. Our purpose was to stress the interest of MR examination for investigating patients complaining of vertigo, tinnitus, and profound sensorineural hearing loss. Normal anatomy as well as the main pathologically encountered changes are illustrated.

Risk factors for borderline pathology in children.

OBJECTIVE: To examine risk factors associated with borderline pathology in latency-age children. METHOD: The subjects were 98 children assessed for day treatment. Borderline subjects were identified in a chart review using the Child Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines, which divided the sample into borderline (n = 41) and nonborderline (n = 57) groups. Functional levels were assessed by Children's Global Assessment Scale scores. The risk factors were also rated by chart review; all subjects were given a cumulative abuse score and a cumulative parental dysfunction score. RESULTS: Both groups…

Anal pathology in patients with Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: A distinctive feature of patients suffering from Crohn's disease is a predisposition to develop a variety of anal complications. The aetiology of such conditions is unclear, and the reported incidence of anal involvement in Crohn's disease varies party due to the various criteria used for classification. This study aims to review the management of patients with symptomatic anal pathology associated with Crohn's disease at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne. METHODS: A database of 306 patients with Crohn's disease referred to the department between January 1978 and October 1994 was r…

[Laryngo-tracheal pathology in newborns and children].

In the newborn and in the children are frequent features like congenital laryngeal stridor, croup, weak or absent cry, cyanotic attacks, apneic attacks, and sometimes are due to disease like laryngomalacia, tracheomalacia, laryngeal web, post-intubation lesions and stenosis, tracheo-esophageal fistula. The Author present an experience of four years in the Vicenza's Hospital with rigid telescopes and flexible fiberoptic instruments in the endoscopic valuation and treatment of this pathology. Moreover present a new technics for the preoperative incannulation of the tracheoesophageal fistula usin…

Molecular pathology of low grade malignant lymphomas.

During the last ten years the combined efforts of pathologists and molecular biologists have helped define several new lymphoma diagnostic categories. In particular, the recognition of chromosomal translocations which have activated the BCL1 and BCL2 proto-oncogenes have strong associations with specific types of non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas such as mantle cell lymphoma and follicular center cell lymphoma, respectively. This review will attempt to summarize our current understanding regarding the contributions of BCL1 and BCL2 to lymphomagenesis and diagnosis.

Growth plate pathology in feline mucopolysaccharidosis VI.

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a family of lysosomal storage diseases that result from the accumulation of partially catabolized glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) within lysosomes. A characteristic of most affected individuals is radiographic evidence of symmetrical epiphyseal dysplasia, with short stature and degenerative joint disease. Although there is evidence of epiphyseal dysfunction, little is known of the changes that occur at the morphological level. The growth plate of the femoral head was studied by light and electron microscopy in five cats with MPS VI (Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome, arylsu

Thus, clearance of microfilaraemia by DEC therapy did not appear to reverse the type of lymphatic pathology observed in microfilaraemic subjects. The lymphoscintigraphy patterns did not correlate with serum levels of antibodies to 3 recombinant filarial antigens. [Secondary mania caused by cerebral organic pathology].

The so-called "secondary mania" are manic syndromes complicating various kinds of somatic illness. Cases of secondary mania following brain injury (i.e., tumors, cerebrovascular lesions, head traumas, infectious diseases, etc.) offer the opportunity to better elucidate the pathophysiology of "primary" mania. Published case reports of secondary mania are reviewed.
