A number of Saudi children (31) with sickle cell disease and thalassemia underwent splenectomy: 12 for frequent blood transfusions, 15 for chronic hypersplenism (most of whom were also the recipients of periodic blood transfusion) and 4 for splenic abscess. A 46-year-old woman with a known history of acute myeloid leukaemia presented with bilateral breast masses with pain and itchiness. The breast masses were hard on palpation. Mammogram was unremarkable. Ultrasound showed multiple conglomerated masses of heterogeneous hyperechogenicity and hypoechogenicity throughout all quadrants of bilateral breasts. Pathology showed mononuclear cells, suggestive of breast leukaemic infiltration. She was treated with decitabine and platelet transfusion.

Hemoglobin SC (HbSC) disease is a hemoglobinopathy that may produce sickling under conditions of hypoxemia, dehydration, and acidosis. We present a case of HbSC disease and tricuspid atresia, type IB. We describe management by cardiopulmonary bypass CPB using exchange transfusion at initiation of bypass and fractionation of collected blood, allowing platelet and plasma apheresis, as an option for patients unable to undergo this procedure off pump.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of blood products occurs frequently in ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery (rAAA). The aim of this study is to establish the impact of packed red blood cell (PRBC), fresh frozen plasma (FFP), and platelet (PLT) transfusion on the 30-day mortality and morbidity (thrombotic versus non thrombotic complications) of rAAAs.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) can be associated with coagulopathy, which may be difficult to rapidly assess and may exacerbate blood loss.
