BACKGROUND: Robotic rectal surgery is gaining in popularity. We aimed to define the learning curve of an experienced laparoscopic colorectal surgeon in performing robot-assisted rectal surgery. We hypothesized that there are multiple phases in this learning process.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis. Consecutive patients who underwent robot-assisted rectal surgery between July 2007 and August 2011 were identified. Operating times were analyzed using the CUSUM (cumulative sum) technique. CUSUMs were model fitted as a fourth-order polynomial. χ(2), Fisher's exact, two independent s

In recent years, transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has been used for the removal of pharyngeal and laryngeal cancers with the objective to improve functional and aesthetic outcomes without worsening the survival. This prospective single-centre cohort study described TORS in selected tumours of the tongue base in order to assess safety, efficacy and functional outcome of the procedure. From October 2010 to February 2012, TORS was performed in 13 consecutive patients affected by T1-T2 tumours of the base of the tongue. This procedure was applicable in all cases. The clinical stage demonstrated 8

UNLABELLED: OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHOSES: TORS (Trans Oral Robotic Surgery) has been demonstrated to be an acceptable alternative to chemoradiation for the treatment of early stage malignant lesions of the oropharynx, with equivalent tumor control and enhanced functional outcomes. Surgical ablation of tumors of the oropharynx under conditions of limited access, however, creates the need to adapt the robotic platform to surgical reconstruction and to assess reconstructive outcomes. We present our experience with the Facial Artery Musculomucosal (FAMM) flap with robotic assistance for the reconstructio

Laparoscopic treatment of benign esophageal conditions is technically complex with several inherent limitations. Robotic-assisted surgery provides technical improvement and helps to overcome some of these limitations. We therefore report a single surgeon's experience in management of benign esophageal diseases by robotic-assisted surgery. Over a period of 8 consecutive years, a retrospective chart review was performed of 105 patients who underwent robotic-assisted surgery for benign esophageal diseases by a single surgeon. Demographic data and outcome measures were studied. The robotic-assiste

Robotic rehabilitation is an effective platform for sensorimotor training after neurological injuries. In this paper, an adaptive controller is developed and implemented for the RiceWrist, a serial-in-parallel robot mechanism for upper extremity robotic rehabilitation. The model-based adaptive controller implementation requires a closed form dynamic model, valid for a restricted domain of generalized coordinates. We have used an existing method to define this domain and verify that the domain is widely within the range of admissible tasks required for the considered application (movements-base

We have been developing the Robot Mask with shape memory alloy based actuators that follows an approach of manipulating the skin through a minimally obtrusive wires, transparent strips and tapes based pulling mechanism to enhance the expressiveness of the face. For achieving natural looking facial expressions by taking the advantage of specific characteristics of the skin, the Robot Mask follows a human anatomy based criteria in selecting these manipulation points and directions. In this paper, we describe a case study of using the Robot Mask to assist physiotherapy of a hemifacial paralyzed p

BACKGROUND: Excessive reliance on wheelchairs in individuals with tetraplegia or paraplegia due to spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to many medical co-morbidities, such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic derangements, osteoporosis, and pressure ulcers. Treatment of these conditions contributes to the majority of SCI health care costs. Restoring able-body-like ambulation in this patient population can potentially reduce the incidence of these medical co-morbidities, in addition to increasing independence and quality of life. However, no biomedical solution exists that can reverse this loss of n

We aimed to explore, highlight and accurately identify the vascular anatomy of the oropharynx, hypopharynx and supraglottis utilizing the transoral robotic perspective. This was a case series using anatomic studies of cadaveric specimens. The cadavers were injected with red- and blue-dyed silicone through the arterial and venous systems to define the macro- and microvasculature. Following injection of the specimen, a da Vinci robotic surgical system was engaged to perform a transoral dissection of the oropharynx, hypopharynx and supraglottic regions. Dissection was carried out under high-defin

BACKGROUND: Transaxillary robotic thyroidectomy, developed by the Yonsei University group from Seoul, Korea, is a new approach that eliminates the need for a cervical incision. Originally, this technique was performed using a two-incision technique (ipsilateral axilla and anterior chest wall). More recently, the chest wall incision is being eliminated and a less invasive robotic thyroid procedure is being performed through a single axillary incision.
SUMMARY: The complexity of this new technique introduces the potential for new complications particularly during the initial learning curve that

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of hyperhidrosis is controversial. Robotic surgical systems with their high-definition magnified 3-dimensional view and increased maneuverability in a confined space may facilitate the technique of selective sympathectomy (ramicotomy). We present a case series of patients undergoing selective postganglionic thoracic sympathectomy using robotic technology.
METHODS: This study is a case series analysis of patients who underwent selective postganglionic thoracic sympathectomy from July 2006 to November 2011. The operation was performed on a video-assisted thor

Early functional and oncological outcome studies suggest that transoral robotic surgery (TORS) may have a role for early stage cancers of the oropharynx. Unlike with traditional mandibular swing or pharyngotomy approaches, access to the oropharynx for reconstruction in TORS cases is limited. Maintaining a good functional result necessitates preserving physiological function where possible. The principles that should guide reconstructive surgeons include maintaining a velopharyngeal sphincter to prevent velopharyngeal insufficiency, maintaining sensate mucosa and restoring bulk in the tongue ba

During robot-assisted surgery for endometrial cancer, a ureteral injury occurred in two women. Both injuries were repaired successfully with robot-assisted surgery. One of the injuries and its repair are shown in an edited video clip. Ureteral injury is a known complication of gynecologic surgery (Hoffman in OBG Manag 20:16-28, 2008). Transection of the pelvic ureter proximal to the parametrium may be repaired by reapproximation or reimplantation. Robot-assisted surgery has recently been established as useful for the performance of ureteral surgery (Kasturi et al. in Urology 79:680-683, 2012;

We describe a robotic and virtual reality system for the rehabilitation of the forearm. It consists of a robotic arm and VR scenarios with a dynamic model of the human upper limb. The system allows to assign specific tasks to perform within the virtual environments. The system simulates the actions of the patient limb and allows exhaustive exercising and motor control, giving visuomotor and haptic feedback and trajectory positioning guidance. The system aids to evaluate the mobility condition of the patient, to personalize the difficult level of the therapy and provides kinematic measures of t

OBJECTIVES: To review the current role of laparoscopy and robot-assisted laparoscopy for managing urinary lithiasis.
RESULTS: The contemporary indications for laparoscopic stone management are: anatomical variations in location or shape of the kidney (pelvic kidney, horseshoe kidney and malrotated kidney); coexisting pathologies, e.g. pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction; and stones in a renal unit with lower ureteric obstruction. The laparoscopic approach allows the simultaneous management of both the pathologies. Symptomatic stones in diverticula not amenable to endourological intervention c

BACKGROUND: The latissimus dorsi muscle is a workhorse of reconstructive surgery. Traditional harvest technique requires a long, posterior donor-site incision. Endoscopic harvest is limited by technical challenges. Robotic technology permits a simpler, minimally invasive harvest technique.
METHODS: Seven consecutive robotic latissimus dorsi muscle harvests were performed by a single surgeon. Two were used as free flaps for scalp reconstruction and the remaining five as pedicled flaps for breast reconstruction; three were for immediate, implant-based reconstruction with nipple-areola complex-s
