Family socialization plays a key role in adolescents' social development, yet little is known about how adolescents are socialized across different family subsystems beyond parental socialization. By using latent profile analysis to capture a holistic view of co-occurring family dynamics, this study aimed to identify different emotion socialization patterns in parent-adolescent and sibling subsystems and their longitudinal associations with adolescent interpersonal competence. Participants were 175 families with at least two children (target adolescent Mage = 14.09, 47.4% female). At baseline

Chronic arsenic exposure can affect multiple organ systems, notably the nervous system and hematopoietic tissue. We present three family members (two sisters and a brother) who developed subacute symmetric sensorimotor neuropathy with skin manifestations and anemia. Nerve conduction studies demonstrated axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Urinary arsenic levels were markedly elevated in all three patients. The source of common exposure was found to be over-the-counter homeopathic medication that all three family members were taking. These cases underscore the importance of suspecting arsenic t

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystem inflammatory disorder in which both genetic predisposition and environmental factors contribute to its pathogenesis.
AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the impact of sibling history on organ involvement and clinical features in BD.
METHODS: A total of 891 patients diagnosed with Behçet's disease were enrolled in the study. Patients were stratified according to the presence and degree of familial aggregation: 651 had no family history of Behçet's disease (sporadic BD), while 240 reported a positive family history, of whom 70 had an affecte

AIM: To explore the impact of sleep disturbances on children with cerebral palsy (CP) and their families.
METHOD: Semi-structured online interviews were conducted with families of children with CP using a qualitative descriptive design. Children with CP aged 3 to 18 years, who experienced clinical sleep disturbance, their siblings, and parents were recruited. Interviews were video-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using inductive, semantic thematic analysis. Rigour was established using member checking, analytical discussion, and rich, thick description.
RESULTS: Thirty participan…

Depression threatens adolescents' psychological health and is influenced by negative interpersonal relationships. Previous studies have explored the effect of a negative parent-child relationship on adolescent depression but have ignored the frequent coexistence of these relationships with other family relationships, for example, sibling relationships. This study examined how parent-child and sibling relationships co-impact adolescent depression, by testing the mediating and moderating roles of sibling relationships between parental attachment and adolescent depression. A sample of 5,896 adole

BACKGROUND: Parents and siblings play central roles in children's healthy development and social relationships across the lifespan. Trauma which occurs as a result of abuse, especially by an immediate family member, such as sibling sexual abuse (SSA) profoundly disrupts psychosocial development and family functioning.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore how parents perceive and describe changes in intrafamilial relationships following disclosure of SSA.
PARTICIPANTS: The sample includes 75 participants who identify as having a child who was sexually abused by a sibling, a child who sexuall…

BACKGROUND: X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) is a primary immunodeficiency caused by pathogenic variants in the Bruton tyrosine kinase ( BTK ) gene, leading to severe B-cell maturation defects and pan-hypogammaglobulinemia. Botryomycosis is a rare chronic bacterial infection, typically caused by Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), characterized by suppurative and chronic inflammation and grape-like bacterial clusters in tissue.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report 2 adult male siblings with previously undiagnosed XLA who presented with cutaneous botryomycosis. Case 1, aged 20 years, developed painl…

PURPOSE: Interventions to support siblings of youth with disabilities and chronic conditions have shown promising outcomes, yet there is limited synthesized literature and guidelines to support their design and development. This scoping review aims to synthesize: (1) study, participant, and intervention characteristics of sibling-focused interventions; and (2) intervention outcomes.
METHODS: Scoping review guidelines were aligned with Arksey and O'Malley, with considerations from Levac et al. and adhered to the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Four databases: (1) Ovid MEDLINE, (2) EMBASE, (3) CINAHL, an…

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a rare, clinically and genetically heterogenous condition that selectively affects the terminal segment of the descending corticospinal tract of the lumbar spine area, causing lower extremity spastic weakness with or without associated complex neurological symptoms. HSP type 11 is the most common form of autosomal recessive HSP and has unique clinical and neuroimaging features.
METHODS: We describe the clinical manifestations and imaging features of siblings with childhood-onset autosomal recessive HSP. Genetic testing confirmed compound hete…

Siblings of children with chronic disorders are at risk of developing mental health problems. Studies are inconclusive about whether sibling mental health is best predicted by the specific diagnoses of the child with disorder or by transdiagnostic factors. The aims of the present study were (1) to examine if specific diagnoses predicted sibling mental health, and (2) to examine if disorder severity in the child with the chronic disorder predicted sibling mental health. Baseline data from a randomized controlled trial were used. Siblings (aged 8 - 16 years) of children with chronic disorders an…

Sibling relationships evolve into a more egalitarian relationship dynamic resembling friendships during adolescence, potentially facilitating the transfer of interpersonal skills across relationships. This study investigates cross-relationship associations in conflict resolution strategies with siblings and friends. Research on family-peer linkages, largely focused on White populations, often overlook the role of siblings in other ethnoracial contexts. Drawing on social learning theory, we examined mean-level differences on conflict resolution strategy use with siblings versus friends and how …

BACKGROUND: Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) is influenced by and occurs within an interconnected family system, because of this there is a growing move towards recognising SSA as a family issue. Families also play a vital role in the disclosure of SSA and in the aftermath of recovery. Nevertheless, a descriptive review consolidating the known family dynamics, characteristics, and responses associated with SSA is absent from research.
OBJECTIVE: A scoping review was conducted to synthesise known family characteristics and dynamics associated with SSA. The review also sought to explore how families

BACKGROUND: Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) is considered the most prevalent and longest-lasting type of interfamilial sexual abuse. The psychological implications of SSA may be felt throughout the harmed siblings' lifespan. Nevertheless, SSA receives very little therapeutic attention.
OBJECTIVE: The present study explores how professionals dealing with the phenomenon see how to work with such cases.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Fifty-two professionals working in the field of SSA participated in the study and completed closed and open-ended questionnaires.
METHODS: A mixed-method research approach …

Sanfilippo syndrome, or mucopolysaccharidosis type III (MPS III), is a rare lysosomal disease caused by congenital enzymatic deficiencies in heparan sulfate (HS) degradation, leading to organ dysfunction. The most severe hallmark of MPS III comprises neurological alterations, although gastrointestinal symptoms (GISs) have also been shown to be relevant in many patients. Here, we explored the contribution of the gut microbiota to MPS III GISs. We analyzed the composition and functionality of the gut microbiota in two MPS III siblings with the same mutation (c.544C > T, c.1080delC, in the SGSH g…
