Understanding Diagnostic Delays for Kaposi Sarcoma in Kenya: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Although HIV-associated Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage in sub-Saharan Africa, reasons for diagnostic delays have not been well described. METHODS: We enrolled patients >18 years with newly diagnosed KS between 2016 and 2019 into the parent study, based in western Kenya. We then purposively selected 30 participants with diversity of disease severity and geographic locations to participate in semistructured interviews. We used 2 behavioral models in developing the codebook for this analysis: situated Information, Motivation, and Behavior framework a

Harmful smartphone applications promoting alcohol and illicit substance use: a review and content analysis in the United States.

Few studies have conducted analysis of commercially available smartphone applications designed to promote alcohol and illicit substance use. The aim of this review is to determine harmful themes of content in applications promoting alcohol and illicit substance use found using recovery app search terms. A systematic search, via Apple iTunes and Google Play stores, was conducted of applications targeting abstinence or reduced substance use in online app stores (n = 1,074 apps) in March 2018. We conducted a secondary analysis of apps encouraging alcohol and illicit substance use in July 2018. Ou

Ripple Effects Mapping: Evaluating Multilevel Perspectives and Impacts of a Statewide Community-Academic Partnership Network on Covid-19 Health Disparities.

INTRODUCTION: Community-academic partnerships played an important role in addressing Covid-19-related health disparities in historically marginalised groups such as racial ethnic minorities and low-income and rural communities in the pandemic. Part of the federal response involved establishing regional community academic networks that engaged highly impacted communities in health disparities research. The statewide Share, Trust, Organize, Partner COVID-19 California Alliance (STOP COVID-19 CA) network was part of the federal response. METHODS: In spring 2024, ripple effects mapping (REM), a p

Integrated metabolomics and transcriptomics reveal biomarkers for detecting fentanyl analog abuse through machine learning.

Fentanyl analogs' (FA) rampant proliferation causes widespread abuse, fatalities, and severe social issues globally. Their high toxicity, rapid metabolism, and poor detectability make them a major anti-drug challenge. This study aimed to establish an accurate method for identifying their abuse. Firstly, a rat model of FA (fentanyl, remifentanil, and sufentanil) abuse was constructed using the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. Subsequently, dual-platform (Liquid and Gas Chromatography - High Resolution Mass Spectrometry) based metabolomic and transcriptomic data were used for weighte

Treatment With Inhaled Nitric Oxide and General Intelligence in Preterm Children in Two European Cohorts.

AIM: To investigate whether treatment with inhaled nitric oxide is associated with cognitive performance at age 5-6 years in preterm-born children. METHODS: We analysed preterm children from two large European cohort studies, the German Neonatal Network (GNN) (N = 3606) and the French EPIPAGE-2 cohort (N = 2579) admitted to neonatal care and followed up at age 5-6 years. Both cohorts had recorded data on iNO treatment. General cognitive ability was tested with IQ tests. Classification and Regression trees analysis was used to identify prenatal, perinatal and neonatal, clinical and social-envi

The trauma factor: Examining the relationships among different types of trauma, dissociation, and psychopathology.

Extensive research has reported a dose-response relationship between exposure to trauma and the severity of both dissociation and psychopathology. However, certain types of trauma may co-occur more frequently than others and specific combinations of traumatic experiences may relate differently to dissociative processes and psychiatric symptoms. In the current study, 359 adult participants completed questionnaires on traumatic experiences, dissociation, and psychopathology. A correlation network analysis showed that some types of trauma are more likely to co-occur and that especially traumatic

The elderly living in single-person households in South Korea: a latent profile analysis of self-esteem, life satisfaction, and depression.

OBJECTIVES: Elderly living alone in South Korea report higher rates of psychological distress compared to the population at large. Using a person-centered approach, the aim of the present study was to identify the latent profiles of South Korean elderly living alone based on self-esteem, life satisfaction, and depression. METHOD: Latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted based on data of 1545 older age individuals living alone. In addition, we examined significant factors that differentiate the observed profiles using multinomial logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: We identified five pr

On Spatiotemporal Overdispersion and Macroparasite Accumulation in Hosts Leading to Aggregation: A Quantitative Framework.

In many host-parasite systems, overdispersion in the distribution of macroparasites leads to parasite aggregation in the host population. This overdispersed distribution is often characterized by the negative binomial or by the power law. The aggregation is shown by a clustering of parasites in certain hosts, while other hosts have few or none. Here, I present a theory behind the overdispersion in complex spatiotemporal systems as well as a computational analysis for tracking the behavior of transmissible diseases with this kind of dynamics. I present a framework where heterogeneity and comple

The network structure of motivation: Interplay with perfectionism, mindfulness and emotion regulation styles.

BACKGROUND: Motivation, a fundamental driver of human behavior, is intricately linked with perfectionism, mindfulness, and emotion regulation styles. Although these constructs have been studied separately, their complex interactions remain unclear. METHODS: This study employed network analysis to explore how these dimensions collectively interact in a sample of 350 s-year high school students from Tabriz, Iran, selected via multi-stage cluster sampling. Data were collected using standardized self-report questionnaires. A Graphical Gaussian Model with polychoric correlations was estimated and

"Alright, that's enough now, because it's not fair": A qualitative study on realities of intersectional inequality among adolescents from Bogotá, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Colombia is one of the most unequal countries in Latin America, with Bogotá exemplifying the urban concentration of structural and intersectional inequalities. Adolescents living in marginalised areas of the city face vulnerabilities due to overlapping systems of oppression, including classism, racism, sexism, and xenophobia. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated these disparities, heightening socioeconomic stressors and influencing developmental processes. This study aimed to explore how adolescents in two socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Bogotá experience and

Cardiac Rehabilitation During the COVID-19 Pandemic and the Potential for Digital Technology to Support Physical Activity Maintenance: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Social distancing from the COVID-19 pandemic may have decreased engagement in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) and may have had possible consequences on post-CR exercise maintenance. The increased use of technology as an adaptation may benefit post-CR participants via wearables and social media. Thus, we sought to explore the possible relationships of both the pandemic and technology on post-CR exercise maintenance. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) understand CR participation during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) identify perceived barriers and facilitators to physical activity after CR

Design, In Silico Targeting, and Characterization of Curcumin-Ibuprofen Prodrug Microspheres for Brain-Specific Delivery in Alzheimer's Therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative condition characterized by limited treatment effectiveness, attributed to inadequate Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) permeability and low medication absorption. Curcumin and ibuprofen possess anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties but are limited by pharmacokinetic constraints. This study aimed to synthesize a curcumin-ibuprofen mutual prodrug (CIP), formulate it into chitosan-based microspheres (CIPM), and evaluate its neuroprotective potential for brain-targeted delivery in AD. METHODS: CIP was synthesized via ethylen

Abnormality of Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Major Depressive Disorder: A Study With Whole-Head Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a functional neuroimaging modality that has advantages in clinical usage. Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have found that the resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) of the default mode network (DMN) is increased, while the RSFC of the cognitive control network (CCN) is reduced in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) compared with healthy controls. This study tested whether the NIRS-based RSFC measurements can detect the abnormalities in RSFC that have been associated with MDD in previous fMRI studies. We measured

Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder: Evidence for a Dimensional Approach.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are currently considered distinct diagnostic categories. Accumulating data suggest the study of anxiety disorders may benefit from the use of dimensional conceptualizations. One such dimension of shared dysfunction is emotion regulation (ER). The current study evaluated dimensional (ER) and categorical (diagnosis) neurocorrelates of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in participants with GAD and SAD and healthy controls (HC). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) rsFC was estimated between all regions of the

'The players are the focus, it's never spoken about as coaches': Perceived factors influencing the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches.

Elite-level coaches operate within highly demanding, pressurised and unstable high-performance environments that can increase their risk of mental ill-health. This qualitative study investigated perceived factors influencing the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches using an ecological systems approach. Fourteen coaches (men = 12, women = 2) from a range of individual and team sports participated in a single semi-structured interview. Five overarching themes perceived to influence the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches were developed through reflexive thematic analysis,

Exposure to online hate speech is positively associated with post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after traumatic events is prevalent and can lead to negative consequences. While social media use has been associated with PTSD, little is known about the specific association of online hate speech on social media networks and PTSD, and whether such association is stronger among those with difficulties in emotion regulation, who may have a harder time coping with hate speech. In a general population sample of Jewish adults (aged 18-70) in Israel (N = 3,998), assessed about two months after the wide-scale terror attacks of October 7, 2023, regression analys
