Comparing Self-Efficacy, Self-Compassion, and Growth Mindset Among Adults With and Without Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: We investigated whether performance on predictors of academic achievement, namely, self-efficacy, self-compassion, and growth mindset, differ between adults, primarily college students, with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their peers without TBI history. METHOD: Eighty-nine respondents anonymously completed an online survey that included demographic questions and three predictive measures of academic achievement: the New General Self-Efficacy Scale (NGSE), the Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form (SCS-SF), and the Growth Mindset Scale. An additional 12 participants with TB

An Exploratory Classification Framework for Poststroke Dysphagia Severity Using Administrative Data: Administrative Data Dysphagia Severity Scale.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing reliance on big data analytics in poststroke dysphagia research (which drives related health care decisions), accurate classification of large, complex data sets is crucial. Although medical coding is commonly used to define patient cohorts, there is no administrative-level instrument for classifying poststroke dysphagia severity. Thus, we aimed to develop a novel classification framework for poststroke dysphagia severity. METHOD: We used data from 445 patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke and dysphagia from the 2017 Medicare 5% Limited Data Set to deve

Principles of neural plasticity and motor learning in swallowing exercise protocols for older adults: A mapping review.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to map swallowing exercise protocols for healthy older adults based on the principles of neural plasticity and motor learning. METHOD: The search strategy was run in MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to 6 May 2025. Two researchers independently screened for interventional studies involving swallowing exercises targeting the oropharyngeal, upper oesophageal, and respiratory structures relevant to swallowing in healthy older adults. The reviewers then mapped the eligible studies for adherence to the 10 principles of neural pla

The Impact of Autistic Traits on Joint Attention in Young Children With Down Syndrome During Mother-Child and Father-Child Interactions.

PURPOSE: Joint attention predicts later language in Down syndrome (DS) and autism. The co-occurrence of autism in children with DS is 6%-19%, which is higher than in the general population. However, little is known about how co-occurring autism in DS impacts the development of joint attention. This study compared mother-child and father-child interactions in families of children with DS. Our purpose was to investigate differences in caregiver joint-attention bids and whether caregiver and child joint attention were associated with autistic traits and receptive language in children with DS. Refining Methods of Experience-Based Co-Design for Application in Aphasia and Cognitive-Communication Disability.

PURPOSE: Co-design of research and services alongside end users is increasingly required by funding bodies and governments. To enable a meaningful inclusion of people with communication disability, planning and modification are required, as standard co-design procedures involve extensive spoken and written language. Experience-based co-design (EBCD) is one co-design approach that is gaining popularity; however, there are few detailed reports to date on adapting EBCD for communication disability. This article outlines our modifications of EBCD to co-design a technology-enabled self-management p

Acoustic Measures of Word-Level Prosody in Childhood Apraxia of Speech: An Initial Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: The "gold standard" of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) diagnosis is expert clinical judgment based on perception of core features: inconsistent errors, impaired transitions, and impaired prosody. However, this standard has several limitations, which may be addressed with acoustic measures. PURPOSE: This retrospective study aims to provide initial validity evidence for nine acoustic measures of prosody and examine lexical stress production in CAS. METHOD: The study involves 33 children with CAS (4-8 years) imitating six bisyllabic words (three strong-weak, three weak-strong). Fo

Incorrect Statements and Citing Errors Regarding the Effect of Ankyloglossia on Speech in Cordray et al., 2023.

PURPOSE: There is a great deal of misinformation among professionals about the effect (or lack thereof) of ankyloglossia on speech. Consequently, many children undergo unnecessary frenotomy procedures that do not improve their speech and may cause unnecessary complications. This letter points out several erroneous statements in Cordray et al. (2023) about the effect of ankyloglossia on speech. In addition, it identifies articles that were incorrectly cited to support these statements. This letter also reveals significant errors of omission, including the results of the systematic review from t
