Pott's disease.

A 15-year-old boy was hospitalized with a 1-month history lumbago and fever. His family history was noncontributory for tuberculosis, and the findings of the physical examination were normal. The sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein level were 55 mm/hour and 48 mg/l, respectively. The result of a purified protein derivative test was 11 x 10 mm. Results of other tests, including rheumatologic studies, serum agglutination for brucellosis, chest radiography, abdominal ultrasonography, and myelography, were normal. The bone biopsy revealed chronic active inflammation. Mycobacterium tuberculos

[Infectious spondylodiscitis. Analysis of a series of 105 cases].

Among 105 cases of infectious spondylitis diagnosed and treated from 1971 through 1990, 23 were due to tuberculosis (TS) and 82 to other causes (NTS). The annual number of cases of NTS rose over the study period, partly because of an increase in iatrogenic spondylitis, whereas the number of TS cases fell. In both groups, mean age of patients was higher than in earlier studies. The leading causative agents in NTS were staphylococci, followed by streptococci, then Escherichia coli. Diagnosis of spondylitis was dependent on the imaging techniques used; among available methods, the most reliable w

Bifacetal dislocation following tuberculosis of the cervical spine.

We present a case of bifacetal dislocation following tuberculosis of the cervical spine with a minimal neurological deficit and a huge retropharyngeal abscess in a 14-year-old Saudi child. Treatment was by anterior debridement, decompression and bone grafting followed 2 weeks later by posterior wiring and fusion from C2 to C5. We also review the literature relating to this subject.

Vertebral arch tuberculosis in two human immunodeficiency virus-seropositive heroin addicts.

We studied two cases of disseminated tuberculosis with vertebral arch involvement in drug addicts seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus. The first patient developed a paraplegia while he was recovering from a meningeal tuberculosis. On the abdominal plain roentgenogram, the right transverse process of L-2 was absent, and a computed tomographic scan revealed destruction of the right vertebral arch together with a collection in the paravertebral area. The second patient had miliary tuberculosis and complained of lumbar pain. The radiologic findings were similar to those in the first case

[Role of the vascular factor in the clinical picture and pathologic anatomy of chronic spinal leptopachymeningitis of tuberculous etiology].

Under observation there were 16 patients with chronic leptopachymeningitis of tuberculous etiology. The disease got complicated with ischemic disturbance of the spinal circulation which developed acutely in 5, and chronically in 14 patients. The clinical manifestations corresponded to the level of the ischemic lesion in the spinal cord and the disease course. Isotopic myelography revealed a complete blocking of the subarachnoidal space. In the cerebrospinal fluid a relative protein-cell dissociation was observed. Pathomorphological examinations of the spinal cord revealed in 5 cases an ischemi

Lateral Extracavitary Approach Versus Posterior Extensive Circumferential Decompression in the Treatment of Complicated Thoracic and Lumbar Tuberculous Spondylitis.

OBJECTIVES AND STUDY DESIGN: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate 45 patients operated upon either by posterior extensive circumferential decompression (PECD) or by the lateral extracavitary (LEC) technique and compare the clinical, radiologic, laboratory, and functional outcomes. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND: The debate continues on the best decompression-fusion technique for treating complicated spinal tuberculosis. In recent times, the advantages of combined surgery have been successfully achieved using the 1-stage salvage technique, with enough accessibility to all 3 spinal colu

Extensive Physiotherapy Rehabilitation for Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Tuberculous Meningitis With Ventriculoperitoneal Shunting: A Case Report.

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM), an advanced form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB), is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection of the meninges surrounding the brain and spinal cord. If it is not promptly and effectively treated, it can result in serious inflammatory reactions and neurological problems. TBM frequently leads to joint stiffness, discomfort, respiratory difficulties, swallowing difficulties, neurological deficits, and muscular weakness. Physiotherapy intervention is essential in treating these issues, as it provides individualized treatment strategies and programs that enha
