OBJECTIVE: To investigate the h4 allele (C35T) frequency of alpha-1,2-fucosyltransferase gene in Chinese population.
METHODS: The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method for identifying C35T variant was established by using PCR to amplify a 125 bp FUT1 gene fragment, including C35T variant sequence, and the PCR product was digested by Hae III restriction enzyme. One hundred and fifty-eight random samples from Chinese blood donor were screened by PCR-RFLP.

This prospective randomized trial evaluated the effect of induction of early meconium evacuation on neonatal jaundice in healthy term neonates. The study group was given glycerin suppository immediately after birth and every 4 hours thereafter, until evacuation of first stool. Glycerin suppository caused faster meconium evacuation but had no effect on mean bilirubin levels at 48 hours. However, males had significantly lower mean bilirubin levels, especially if they also had type A blood group. In 81 patients with fibrous intra-abdominal adhesions there was a high incidence of other lesions in which there was a substantial element of fibrosis. These included chronic peptic ulceration, ovarian cysts, fibrous stenotic lesions, and thickened scars. It is suggested that in some patients a generalized fibrotic tendency as well as local factors may play a part in the pathogenesis of adhesions.

The blood group B specificity of Escherichia coli O(86) antigen, a B specific oligosaccharide fraction from it, and the B activity of a preparation of an "infectious mononucleosis receptor" from cattle erythrocytes are destroyed by alpha-galactosidase from the coffee bean, as demonstrated for the E. coli antigen by three methods. Blood group H(O) activity appears simultaneously. Galactose is the only hexose released from all three substances.

Persons of blood group O are at increased risk of developing cholera gravis. In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind safety-immunogenicity trial of live oral cholera vaccine CVD 103-HgR in 5- to 9-year-old Chilean children, vibriocidal antibody seroconversion (74% overall) did not differ by blood group.
