Somesthetic discrimination thresholds in the absence of the corpus callosum.

The aim of this study was to investigate how the absence of the corpus callosum affects somesthetic sensation on the axial midline and in proximal and distal body regions. For this purpose, two-point discrimination ability was evaluated in four acallosal subjects, four callosotomized subjects, six IQ-matched subjects and 10 control subjects with average and above average IQ. Sensory thresholds were established in the distal (index, palm), proximal (forearm), cranio-axial (forehead) and axial (dorsal trunk) body regions. The threshold was defined as the smallest separation at which the two poin

The Edinger-Westphal nucleus: sources of input influencing accommodation, pupilloconstriction, and choroidal blood flow.

This study used neuroanatomical techniques to investigate sources of afferents to the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW) of the pigeon. The EW contains the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons that, by way of the oculomotor nerve, project to the ciliary ganglion (Narayanan and Narayanan, '76; Lyman and Mugnaini, '80). The ciliary ganglion, in turn, innervates the internal musculature of the eye; the ciliary body, the iris sphincter muscle, and the smooth muscle of choroidal blood vessels (Marwitt et al., '71; Pilar and Tuttle, '82). In the bird, the neurons in the ciliary ganglion that innervate t

Respiratory responses to aortic and carotid chemoreceptor activation in the dog.

Respiratory responses arising from both chemical stimulation of vascularly isolated aortic body (AB) and carotid body (CB) chemoreceptors and electrical stimulation of aortic nerve (AN) and carotid sinus nerve (CSN) afferents were compared in the anesthetized dog. Respiratory reflexes were measured as changes in inspiratory duration (TI), expiratory duration (TE), and peak averaged phrenic nerve activity (PPNG). Tonic AN and AB stimulations shortened TI and TE with no change in PPNG, while tonic CSN and CB stimulations shortened TE, increased PPNG, and transiently lengthened TI. Phasic AB and

Evidence for invasion of regenerated ventral root afferents into the spinal cord of the rat subjected to sciatic neurectomy during the neonatal period.

Sectioning the sciatic nerve of experimental animals at the neonatal stage triggers growth of afferent fibers in the ventral root. The present study examined the possibility that the regenerating fiber terminals grow into the spinal cord. The sciatic nerve on one side was cut in neonatal rats. After the rats were fully grown, either an electrophysiological or a histochemical study was performed. The results of electrophysiological experiments showed that stimulation of certain loci in the L5 spinal cord evoked antidromic potentials in the L5 ventral root with a long latency. Various evidence s

Long-term potentiation of electrotonic coupling at mixed synapses.

Long-term potentiation of chemical synapses is closely related to memory and learning. Studies of this process have concentrated on chemically mediated excitatory synapses. By contrast, activity-dependent modification of gap junctions, which also widely exist in higher structures such as hippocampus and neocortex, has not been described. Here we report that at mixed synapses between sensory afferents and an identified reticulospinal neuron, the electrotonic coupling potential can be potentiated, as well as the chemically mediated excitatory postsynaptic potential, for a prolonged time period u

Effect of digitalis on central demyelinative conduction block in vivo.

In searching for agents effective in treating multiple sclerosis, we studied the effect of a short-acting digitalis, ouabain, on conduction block in an animal model of central nervous system demyelination. The electrogenic sodium/potassium pump, which digitalis specifically inhibits, is responsible for part of the resting membrane potential and also the activity-related membrane hyperpolarization following high-frequency impulses. The latter causes intermittent conduction block in demyelinated fibers. Therefore, digitalis might be expected to reverse demyelinative conduction blocks by reducing

Central projection of proprioceptive afferents arising from maxillo-facial regions in some animals studied by HRP-labeling technique.

20 ICR mice (adult females) were used for analyzing the axonal projection of the trigeminal mesencephalic tract neurons and 10 Japanese shrew-moles for analyzing that of the snout proprioceptive neurons. The HRP-labeled axons were found to be ipsilaterally terminated in the trigeminal motor nucleus, supratrigeminal nucleus and trigeminal main and spinal tract nuclei, lateral pontine-medullary reticular formation, vagal dorsal motor and hypoglossal nuclei and the lamina V of the C2 spinal cord segments. No HRP-labeled axons were found in the facial and solitary nuclei and the cerebellum. Also,

[Critical remarks on so-called cervicogenic vertigo].

A critical review of neurophysiological literature is given about the part played by the neck proprioceptors in the regulation of vestibular functions. In comparison with vestibular and optokinetic influences the neck proprioceptors are of secondary importance. A critical review of the publications by the supporters of a cervical genesis of vertigo leads to the conclusion that "cervical nystagmus" must be proven before the concept of neck-triggered vertigo can be accepted. In relation to all forms of vertigo, vertigo induced by cervical disorder represents a very low percentage only.

The sources of supraspinal afferents to the spinal cord in a variety of limbed reptiles. I. Reticulospinal systems.

Horseradish peroxidase was injected into various levels of the spinal cord of turtles (Pseudemys and Chrysemys), lizards (Tupinambis, Iquana, Gekko, Sauromelus, and Gerrhonotus), and a crocodilian (Caiman). The results suggest that brainstem reticulospinal projections in limbed reptiles rival mammalian reticulospinal systems in complexity. The reptilian myelencephalic reticular formation can be divided into four distinct reticulospinal nuclei. Reticularis inferior pars dorsalis (RID) contains multipolar neurons which project bilaterally to the spinal cord. Reticularis inferior pars ventralis (

Input-output relationships of the central respiratory controller during peripheral muscle stimulation in cats.

1. Inspiratory output responses, measured as integrated phrenic activity, to hypercapnia, to carotid sinus nerve stimulation, to unilateral and bilateral stimulation of calf muscles and to combinations of these stimuli were determined in paralysed, vagotomized and glomectomized cats whose end-tidal PCO2 was kept constant by means of a servo-controlled ventilator. 2. Confirming an earlier report (Eldridge, Gill-Kumar & Millhorn, 1981), the inspiratory response to progressive hypercapnic stimulation of the central chemoreceptors was not linear, and the responses to a constant carotid sinus nerve

The amygdalostriatal projection in the rat--an anatomical study by anterograde and retrograde tracing methods.

Tritiated leucine and proline injected into the amygdaloid complex was found to label a voluminous amygdalostriatal fiber system which is distributed to all parts of the striatum except an antero-dorsolateral striatal sector. The connection is established by way of the longitudinal association bundle as well as the stria terminalis, and includes a modest (10-15%), symmetrically distributed contralateral component conveyed by the anterior commissure. Both autoradiographic findings and subsequent observations in retrograde cell-labelling (horseradish peroxidase) material indicate that the amygda

Peripheral nerve autografts to the rat spinal cord: studies with axonal tracing methods.

In young adult female rats, autologous sciatic nerve segments were transplanted to the thoracic region of the spinal cord. The grafts became well innervated but led to no obvious functional improvement. The origin and termination of axons in the grafts was studied by retrograde neuronal labeling with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and radioautographic axonal tracing. Studies with HRP indicated that some axons in the grafts originated from intrinsic CNS neurons with their cell bodies in nearby segments of the spinal cord and that others arose from dorsal root ganglia at the level of the grafts an

Short latency somatosensory evoked potentials to peroneal nerve stimulation: scalp topography and the effect of different frequency filters.

Short latency SEPs to peroneal nerve stimulation were recorded from the scalp of 22 normal adults. The scalp topography and the effect of different frequency filters on these potentials were investigated. Using a wider bandpass (5-3000 Hz), this response usually consisted of 3 positive potentials (peak latencies 17, 22 and 27 msec) followed by a negative potential (peak latency 34 msec). Using a narrower bandpass (150-3000 Hz), these potentials were fractionated into subcomponents and up to 6 positive potentials were followed by an often bilobed negative potential occurring 4-10 msec earlier t

Afferent projections related to attack sites in the pontine tegmentum.

Attack by a cat on a rat was elicited by electrical stimulation of the ventral parabrachial nucleus or the paralemniscal pontine reticular formation. The attack was quiet and it differed from similar behavior elicited at other sites in that the cat not only bit the rat but struck it with its paw. Horseradish peroxidase was deposited at the attack sites. Cells sending projections to the attack sites were located in gyrus proreus, anterior, central, and medial amygdala, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, lateral, dorsal and perifornical hypothalamus, as well as the central gray matter, sup

[Autonomic function tests for analysis of pathophysiology and prognosis of autonomic neuropathy].

It is recommended to assess each autonomic system with system-specific function tests. Pupillary and cardiocirculatory systems have a benefit to perform the tests quantitatively, but most of the other systems are measured qualitatively. The aim of the tests exist in detecting the focus and the severity of a disease. Some tests are favored to be used repeatedly for judging the recovery. Head-up tilt and Valsalva tests are not adequate to observe the short-term improvement, but serum noradrenalin level has a good correlation to the rapid recovery. Autonomic symptoms may occur due to the dysfunct

Acupuncture anesthesia in neurosurgery.

This paper explores the method of acupuncture anesthesia in craniocerebral operations: selection of cases and preoperative management; selection of acupuncture points and adjustment of stimulus parameters; preoperative administration of drugs and choice of proper adjuvants during the operation; and problems existing in craniocerebral operations during the application of acupuncture anesthesia and their countermeasures. The "triple contrary effects" of acupuncture anesthesia are considered, namely: anti-pain or analgesia, anti-shock, and anti-infection. How acupuncture activates the analgesic e

Role of the striatopallidal pathway in renewal and reacquisition of alcohol seeking.

The ventral pallidum (VP) is a key component of the neural circuitry mediating relapse to drug seeking, but the critical afferent pathways to VP recruited during relapse remain poorly understood. We studied the role of the nucleus accumbens core (AcbC) → VP pathway in ABA renewal and reacquisition of alcohol seeking. Rats received application of adenoviral vectors encoding eYFP, ChR2(H134R), or eNpHr3.0 to AcbC and implantation of fiber optic cannulas into VP to permit photostimulation of AcbC terminals there. Rats were then trained to self-administer alcoholic beer in 1 context (A), extinguis…

Sensorimotor effects of plasticity-inducing percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation protocols: a blinded, randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation of skin afferents can induce somatosensory plasticity in humans. Nevertheless, it is unknown if this is possible to do through percutaneous stimulation of a peripheral nerve, which will allow for regional anaesthesia interventions. Furthermore, potentiation protocols applied over mainly non-nociceptive fibres inhibit nociception in rodents, but this has not been tested in humans. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a protocol aiming to depress the nociceptive circuit and another aiming to potentiate non-nociceptive circuits produce regional hypoalgesia and chang

Brain blood-flow change with acute vagus nerve stimulation in treatment-refractory major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Existing neuroimaging studies of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in treatment resistant major depression (TRMD) suggest that many brain regions (eg, prefrontal cortex, thalamus, cingulate cortex, insular cortex) associated with mood disorders undergo alterations in blood flow/metabolism. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Positron emission tomography (PET oxygen-15 labeled water or PET [(15)O] H(2)O) was used to identify changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in response to immediate VNS in 13 subjects with TRMD. We hypothesized rCBF changes along the afferent pathway of the vagus and in
