Vitamin C intake and the risk of preterm delivery.

OBJECTIVE: Ascorbic acid deficiency may lead to premature rupture of the membranes. STUDY DESIGN: The study included a prospective cohort of pregnant women, aged >/=16 years, with singleton gestations who received care at one of four prenatal clinics in central North Carolina from 1995 through 1998. Vitamin C intake preconceptionally and during the second trimester was examined for its association with preterm delivery and subsets of preterm labor, premature rupture of the membranes, and medical induction in 2064 women. RESULTS: Women who had total vitamin C intakes of <10th percentile preco…

Prevention of iron deficiency.

This chapter discusses different methods to prevent iron deficiency--to reduce iron losses (e.g. reducing menstrual iron losses by using a contraceptive pill or combating of hookworm infestation) or to increase iron absorption. Iron absorption can be increased (1) by modifying the composition of meals--increasing the content of dietary factors enhancing iron absorption (e.g. meat and ascorbic acid) or reducing the content of factors inhibiting iron absorption such as phytate and iron-binding phenolic compounds, (2) by increasing the iron content of the diet by fortification with iron, or by (3

Prevention of iron deficiency by milk fortification. II. A field trial with a full-fat acidified milk.

In a longitudinal study from age 3 to 15 mo, 276 term, healthy, spontaneously weaned infants received a full-fat acidified milk fortified with 15 mg of elemental Fe as ferrous sulfate and 100 mg of ascorbic acid/100 g of powder and 278 control infants received milk without additives. At ages 9 and 15 mo significant differences were encountered in all measures of Fe nutriture in favor of the fortified group (p less than 0.001). Anemia (Hg less than 110 g/L) was present in 25.7% of unfortified infants compared with only 2.5% in those fortified at age 15 mo. Saturation of transferrin less than 9%

Some observations on the effects of vitamin C deficiency on bone.

Young guinea-pigs were given a scorbutic diet, and some subsequently allowed to recover. When killed, vessels were perfused with a mixture of Micropaque and Berlin blue. Walls of vessels formed during the period of ascorbic acid deficiency were weak. Sometimes bursts were surrounded by granulation tissue. Other weak patches burst as the perfusion medium was injected. All the sinusoid vessels were dilated, and blood flow in the bones was sluggish. Bone turnover was affected. The impaired blood flow caused resorption, in a manner analogous to bone removal in disuse osteoporosis. Impaired matrix …

Role of oxidative stress in hearing impairment in patients with type two diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: Although many clinical investigations have found a relationship between hearing loss and diabetes mellitus, the pathophysiology of this effect remains controversial. To date, the mechanisms of hearing loss in diabetic patients have been explained in terms of microangiopathy, neuropathy and encephalopathy. However, many reports indicate that some diabetic complications are associated with oxidative stress related to the diabetes itself. In the present study, we hypothesised that oxidative stress may be a cause of hearing loss in diabetic patients. METHODS: The study group comprised

Inadequate Vitamin C Intake and Intestinal Inflammation Are Associated with Multiple Micronutrient Deficiency in Young Children: Results from a Multi-Country Birth Cohort Study.

Children living in resource-limited settings often suffer from multiple micronutrient deficiencies (MMD). However, there lacks evidence on the correlates of MMD in young children. We investigated the role of diets, water, sanitation and hygiene practice, enteric infections, and impaired gut health on MMD in children at 24 months of age using data from the multi-country MAL-ED birth cohort study. Co-existence of more than one micronutrient deficiency (e.g., anemia, iron, zinc, or retinol deficiency) was considered as MMD. We characterized intestinal inflammation by fecal concentrations of myelo

Essential fatty acid metabolism in diseases of connective tissue with special reference to scleroderma and to Sjogren's syndrome.

Drugs which modify the conversion of essential fatty acids to prostaglandins and leukotrienes are the mainstays of treatment in rheumatology. Yet these drugs have little or no action in scleroderma or Sjogren's syndrome and under some circumstances may have adverse effects. Patients with scleroderma have been shown to have very high levels of circulating prostaglandins, coupled with depletion of the prostaglandin precursors, dihomogammalinolenic acid and arachidonic acid. Levels of the metabolites of arachidonic acid, 22:4n-6 and 22:5n-6, which have major roles in maintaining normal cell membr

Oyster Peptide-Ferrous Chelate Preparation Optimization Structural Characteristics and Enhanced Bioavailability.

Iron deficiency anemia remains a global nutritional challenge due to the low bioavailability and side effects of conventional inorganic iron supplements. A novel organic iron supplement, oyster peptide ferrous chelate (OP-Fe), was prepared using oyster peptides as ligands. Its preparation process was optimized via single-factor experiments and statistical methods with the optimal conditions identified as 1% peptide concentration, 35 °C chelation temperature, 3.91:1 peptide-to-iron ratio, 1.49% ascorbic acid concentration and pH 6.05. Under these conditions, the chelate's iron content reached 1

The importance of dietary history: A case of scurvy mimicking vasculitis.

Scurvy, a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency, is now uncommon in developed countries with ample food resources. We present the case of a 28-year-old man with no significant past medical history who presented with lower extremity petechiae, initially raising suspicion for vasculitis. Although his skin biopsy findings were consistent with vasculitis, based on the characteristic perifollicular distribution of the purpura, the presence of corkscrew hairs, and the finding of a subfascial haematoma of the gastrocnemius muscle, which raised suspicion for a bleeding tendency, led us to suspect scu
