OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery has its own set of risks and complications. This study from a single center and a single surgeon analyzes various risk factors for complications and tries to establish if there is a learning curve effect in minimizing the complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 519 patients (1024 leads) who underwent DBS surgery and 232 patients who underwent implantable pulse generator replacement (IPG), by a single surgeon, between the years 1999 and 2019 was performed. Perioperative and hardware related complications were evaluated.

In a herd of 70 bull calves (4-5 months of age) kept on pasture, 56 (80%) animals showed, after natural infection with Moraxella bovis (M. bovis), typical clinical signs of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). Botulinum toxin (BTX) has become a safe and effective therapeutic tool in the treatment of a variety of neurological disorders, especially dystonias. Electrophysiological improvement in the blink reflex latency after neurovascular decompression of the facial nerve in patients with hemifacial spasm is believed to be related to remyelination and occurs 2-8 months after surgery. We report a patient with hemifacial spasms for 3 years, in whom the increased blink reflex latency returned to normal within a week after surgery. This suggests that compression without demyelination may be responsible for increased blink reflex latency in some of the patients with hemifacial spasms.

CASE HISTORY: A seasonal syndrome, presenting as corneal oedema and distinct from infectious keratoconjunctivitis, has been reported in sheep, goats, and camelids in New Zealand. This study details the diagnostic investigation on two properties, of multiple cases of corneal oedema in small ruminants. Outbreak 1 occurred in a mob of sheep in April/May 2023 in the Manawatū region, with 27/52 sheep affected. Outbreak 2 occurred in a group of farmed goats in February/March 2024 in the Auckland region, with 4/5 goats affected.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Skin pores (SPs) are normal and benign skin structures that are mostly located on the face (nose, cheeks, etc.) that cause many aesthetic concerns or complaints. One known effective treatment is botulinum toxin A (BTXA), which is also approved for the treatment of strabismus, blepharospasm, muscle spasm, cervical dystonia, glabella wrinkles, and primary axillary hyperhidrosis.
