Heart rate variability as a marker of autonomic dysfunction in children with primary Raynaud's phenomenon.

INTRODUCTION: Splenomegaly with focal splenic lesions represents a complex diagnostic entity, encompassing a broad spectrum of haematological, infectious, autoimmune, infiltrative and malignant disorders. Distinguishing benign from malignant pathology is particularly challenging when splenomegaly is accompanied by cytopenias and a rapidly progressive clinical course. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 43-year-old woman presented with severe left upper quadrant abdominal pain and persistent vomiting. Physical examination revealed splenomegaly, and laboratory investigations showed pancytopenia. Abdominal ultr

Overcoming Drug Resistance in Advanced Prostate Cancer by Drug Repurposing.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer in men. Common treatments include active surveillance, surgery, or radiation. Androgen deprivation therapy and chemotherapy are usually reserved for advanced disease or biochemical recurrence, such as castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), but they are not considered curative because PCa cells eventually develop drug resistance. The latter is achieved through various cellular mechanisms that ultimately circumvent the pharmaceutical's mode of action. The need for novel therapeutic approaches is necessary under these circumstances. An

Osteoarthritis of the knee - biochemical aspect of applied therapies: a review.

The most prevalent form of arthritis is osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, which is characterized by a degeneration of articular cartilage resulting in the development of osteophytes, or bone spurs. Main goals of OA treatment are to reduce pain, slow the disease progression, and improve joint function and the quality of life. The purpose of this study was to verify all the therapies recommended by the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO) from the biochemical point of view. Advancement of NF-κB Signaling Pathway: A Novel Target in Pancreatic Cancer.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the deadliest cancers and is the third highest among cancer related deaths. Despite modest success with therapy such as gemcitabine, pancreatic cancer incidence remains virtually unchanged in the past 25 years. Among the several driver mutations for PDAC, Kras mutation contributes a central role for its development, progression and therapeutic resistance. Repurposing Drugs in Oncology (ReDO)-mebendazole as an anti-cancer agent.

Mebendazole, a well-known anti-helminthic drug in wide clinical use, has anti-cancer properties that have been elucidated in a broad range of pre-clinical studies across a number of different cancer types. Significantly, there are also two case reports of anti-cancer activity in humans. The data are summarised and discussed in relation to suggested mechanisms of action. Based on the evidence presented, it is proposed that mebendazole would synergise with a range of other drugs, including existing chemotherapeutics, and that further exploration of the potential of mebendazole as an anti-cancer

Molecular and cellular mechanisms of skeletal muscle atrophy: an update.

Skeletal muscle atrophy is defined as a decrease in muscle mass and it occurs when protein degradation exceeds protein synthesis. Potential triggers of muscle wasting are long-term immobilization, malnutrition, severe burns, aging as well as various serious and often chronic diseases, such as chronic heart failure, obstructive lung disease, renal failure, AIDS, sepsis, immune disorders, cancer, and dystrophies. Pharmacological Treatments and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring in Patients with Chronic Pain.

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience that affects every aspect of a patient's life and which may be treated through different pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Postoperative Natural Killer Cell Dysfunction: The Prime Suspect in the Case of Metastasis Following Curative Cancer Surgery.

Surgical resection is the foundation for the curative treatment of solid tumors. However, metastatic recurrence due to the difficulty in eradicating micrometastases remain a feared outcome. Paradoxically, despite the beneficial effects of surgical removal of the primary tumor, the physiological stress resulting from surgical trauma serves to promote cancer recurrence and metastasis. The postoperative environment suppresses critical anti-tumor immune effector cells, including Natural Killer (NK) cells. The literature suggests that NK cells are critical mediators in the formation of metastases i
