Role of acute exposure to environmental stressors in the gut-brain-periphery axis in the presence of cognitive resilience.

Climate change-induced environmental stressors, including ambient particulate matter (PM2.5) and extreme heat stress (HS), pose serious health risks, particularly for neurodegenerative diseases. PM2.5 exacerbates cardiovascular and neurodegenerative conditions, while HS increases mortality and worsens air pollution. Combined exposure may amplify these effects, especially in vulnerable populations at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). In our experimental study using a mouse model of early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD), we explored the combined effects of extreme weather conditions, particula

Global Assessment of current and future chikungunya virus transmission risk using optimized maxent modeling.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) primarily spreads through an urban transmission cycle involving humans and two principal mosquito vectors, Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, especially in densely populated areas, posing significant public health challenges as climate change alters vector habitats. This study applied an optimized Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) model incorporating CHIKV and primary vector occurrence data (2005-2020) and filtered environmental predictors within a hierarchical framework to project CHIKV transmission risk under current and 96 future scenarios. Under current climate conditions, ar

Effects of temperature on the life history traits of intermediate host snails of fascioliasis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The impact of climate change has led to variations in various biological processes, leading to altered transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, including snail-borne diseases (SBDs). Fascioliasis is one of the neglected zoonotic tropical snail-borne diseases caused by the trematode of the genus Fasciola. This review focused on laboratory experimental and model studies that evaluate the potential effect of temperature change on the ecology and biology of the intermediate host snails (IHS) of Fasciola. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on Google Scholar, EBSCOhost, and

The influence of climate change on freshwater availability in the Sokoto Rima River Basin, Northwestern Nigeria.

This research entailed the acquisition of long-term (1980-2020) meteorological data (rainfall, temperature, and runoff) which was used to compute the values for the mean annual, monthly, and seasonal hydro-climate variables to establish their trend and behavior. To substantiate if the patterns of runoff are in any way due to the changing climate, the meteorological data were subjected to non-parametric tests-Mann-Kendall (MK), Sen's slope estimator, Kendall tau, and partial correlation. MK trend test for runoff, rainfall, and temperature (on an annual and seasonal basis) revealed significant t

Increasing global temperatures threaten gains in maternal and newborn health in Africa: A review of impacts and an adaptation framework.

Anatomical, physiologic, and socio-cultural changes during pregnancy and childbirth increase vulnerability of women and newborns to high ambient temperatures. Extreme heat can overwhelm thermoregulatory mechanisms in pregnant women, especially during labor, cause dehydration and endocrine dysfunction, and compromise placental function. Clinical sequelae include hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, and stillbirth. High ambient temperatures increase rates of infections, and affect health worker performance and healthcare seeking. Rising temperatures with climate change an

High elevation increases the risk of Y chromosome loss in Alpine skink populations with sex reversal.

The view that has genotypic sex determination and environmental sex determination as mutually exclusive states in fishes and reptiles has been contradicted by the discovery that chromosomal sex and environmental influences can co-exist within the same species, hinting at a continuum of intermediate states. Systems where genes and the environment interact to determine sex present the opportunity for sex reversal to occur, where the phenotypic sex is the opposite of that predicted by their sex chromosome complement. The skink Bassiana duperreyi has XX/XY sex chromosomes with sex reversal of the

West Nile virus in Spain: Forecasting the geographical distribution of risky areas with an ecological niche modelling approach.

West Nile virus (WNV), a well-known emerging vector-borne arbovirus with a zoonotic life cycle, represents a threat to both public and animal health. Transmitted by ornithophilic mosquitoes, its transmission is difficult to predict and even more difficult to prevent. The massive and unprecedented number of human cases and equid outbreaks in Spain during 2020 interpellates for new approaches. For the first time, we present an integrate analysis from a niche perspective to provide an insight to the situation of West Nile disease (WND) in Spain. Our modelling approach benefits from the combined u

Variable climatic conditions dominate recent phytoplankton dynamics in Chesapeake Bay.

Variable climatic conditions strongly influence phytoplankton dynamics in estuaries globally. Our study area is Chesapeake Bay, a highly productive ecosystem providing natural resources, transportation, and recreation for nearly 16 million people inhabiting a 165,000-km(2) watershed. Since World War II, nutrient over-enrichment has led to multiple ecosystem impairments caused by increased phytoplankton biomass as chlorophyll-a (chl-a). Doubled nitrogen (N) loadings from 1945-1980 led to increased chl-a, reduced water clarity, and low dissolved oxygen (DO), while decreased N loadings from 1981-

Impacts of climate, land use, and biological invasion on the ecology of immature Aedes mosquitoes: implications for La Crosse emergence.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) cause many diseases worldwide and their transmission is likely to change with land use and climate changes. La Crosse virus (LACV) is historically transmitted by the native mosquito Aedes triseriatus (Say) in the upper Midwestern US, but the invasive congeners Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and A. japonicus (Theobald), which co-occur with A. triseriatus in water-holding containers, may be important accessory vectors in the Appalachian region where La Crosse encephalitis is an emerging disease. This review focuses on evidence for how climate, land use, and biolog

Morbidity in the marshes: using spatial epidemiology to investigate skeletal evidence for Malaria in Anglo-Saxon England (AD 410-1050).

Concerns over climate change and its potential impact on infectious disease prevalence have contributed to a resurging interest in malaria in the past. A wealth of historical evidence indicates that malaria, specifically Plasmodium vivax, was endemic in the wetlands of England from the 16th century onwards. While it is thought that malaria was introduced to Britain during the Roman occupation (AD first to fifth centuries), the lack of written mortality records prior to the post-medieval period makes it difficult to evaluate either the presence or impact of the disease. The analysis of human sk

Connecting complex and simplified models of tipping elements: a nonlinear two-forcing emulator for the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation.

BACKGROUND: Despite its far-reaching implications, accurately characterizing the tipping dynamics of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) remains a significant challenge. Complex models, including Earth System Models (ESMs) and Earth System Models of Intermediate Complexity (EMICs), offer valuable insights; however, they are computationally expensive and subject to substantial uncertainties in identifying AMOC tipping points. In contrast, simple conceptual models based on non-linear dynamics have been developed to represent tipping elements such as the AMOC. These models can

Environmental drivers of sulfur dioxide variability in a tropical urban region: a state space modeling approach for Campo Grande, Brazil.

Understanding the temporal dynamics of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) in tropical urban environments is essential for evaluating air quality trends and supporting environmental management policies. This study investigates daily SO₂ variability in Campo Grande, Brazil, from 2003 to 2022, integrating meteorological information into a multivariate autoregressive state space (MARSS) model. SO₂ data were obtained from SISAM/INPE (based on the CAMS global reanalysis), and meteorological covariates (precipitation, air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed) were extracted from the MERRA-2 reanalysis. Climate change could fuel urinary schistosomiasis transmission in Africa and Europe.

The freshwater snail Bulinus truncatus is an important intermediate host for trematode parasites causing urogenital schistosomiasis, a tropical disease affecting over 150 million people. Despite its medical importance, uncertainty remains about its global distribution and the potential impacts of climate change on its future spread. Here, we investigate the distribution of B. truncatus, combining the outputs of correlative and mechanistic modelling methods to fully capitalize on both experimental and occurrence data of the species and to create a more reliable distribution forecast than ever c

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) cases are not random: explaining trend, low- and high-frequency oscillations based on the Austrian TBE time series.

BACKGROUND: Why human tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) cases differ from year to year, in some years more 100%, has not been clarified, yet. The cause of the increasing or decreasing trends is also controversial. Austria is the only country in Europe where a 40-year TBE time series and an official vaccine coverage time series are available to investigate these open questions. METHODS: A series of generalized linear models (GLMs) has been developed to identify demographic and environmental factors associated with the trend and the oscillations of the TBE time series. Both the observed and the pre

Potential for Hydroclimatically Driven Shifts in Infectious Disease Outbreaks: The Case of Tularemia in High-Latitude Regions.

Hydroclimatic changes may be particularly pronounced in high-latitude regions and can influence infectious diseases, jeopardizing regional human and animal health. In this study, we consider the example of tularemia, one of the most studied diseases in high-latitude regions, which is likely to be impacted by large regional hydroclimatic changes. For this disease case, we use a validated statistical model and develop a method for quantifying possible hydroclimatically driven shifts in outbreak conditions. The results show high sensitivity of tularemia outbreaks to certain combinations of hydroc

Prediction of insect pest distribution as influenced by elevation: Combining field observations and temperature-dependent development models for the coffee stink bug, Antestiopsis thunbergii (Gmelin).

The antestia bug, Antestiopsis thunbergii (Gmelin 1790) is a major pest of Arabica coffee in Africa. The bug prefers coffee at the highest elevations, contrary to other major pests. The objectives of this study were to describe the relationship between A. thunbergii populations and elevation, to elucidate this relationship using our knowledge of the pest thermal biology and to predict the pest distribution under climate warming. Antestiopsis thunbergii population density was assessed in 24 coffee farms located along a transect delimited across an elevation gradient in the range 1000-1700 m asl

A Multiscale Model for the World's First Parasitic Disease Targeted for Eradication: Guinea Worm Disease.

Guinea worm disease (GWD) is both a neglected tropical disease and an environmentally driven infectious disease. Environmentally driven infectious diseases remain one of the biggest health threats for human welfare in developing countries and the threat is increased by the looming danger of climate change. In this paper we present a multiscale model of GWD that integrates the within-host scale and the between-host scale. The model is used to concurrently examine the interactions between the three organisms that are implicated in natural cases of GWD transmission, the copepod vector, the human
