Supervised Learning of Physical Activity Features From Functional Accelerometer Data.

OBJECTIVE: We propose a new health informatics framework to analyze physical activity (PA) from accelerometer devices. Accelerometry data enables scientists to extract personal digital features useful for precision health decision making. Existing methods in accelerometry data analysis typically begin with discretizing summary counts by certain fixed cutoffs into activity categories. One well-known limitation is that the chosen cutoffs are often validated under restricted settings, and cannot be generalizable across populations, devices, or studies. METHODS: We develop a data-driven approach

Tracking clusters of patients over time enables extracting information from medico-administrative databases.

CONTEXT: Identifying clusters (i.e., subgroups) of patients from the analysis of medico-administrative databases is particularly important to better understand disease heterogeneity. However, these databases contain different types of longitudinal variables which are measured over different follow-up periods, generating truncated data. It is therefore fundamental to develop clustering approaches that can handle this type of data. OBJECTIVE: We propose here cluster-tracking approaches to identify clusters of patients from truncated longitudinal data contained in medico-administrative databases

Unsupervised clustering to differentiate rheumatoid arthritis patients based on proteomic signatures.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have different presentations and prognoses. Cluster analysis based on proteomic signatures creates independent phenogroups of patients with different pathophysiological backgrounds. We aimed to identify distinct pathophysiological clusters of RA patients based on circulating proteomic biomarkers. METHOD: This was a cohort study including 399 RA patients. Clustering was performed on 94 circulating proteins (92 CVDII Olink®, high-sensitivity troponin T, and C-reactive protein). Unsupervised clustering was performed using a partitioning cluster …

Clustering-Fusion Feature Selection Method in Identifying Major Depressive Disorder Based on Resting State EEG Signals.

Depression is a heterogeneous syndrome with certain individual differences among subjects. Exploring a feature selection method that can effectively mine the commonness intra-groups and the differences inter-groups in depression recognition is therefore of great significance. This study proposed a new clustering-fusion feature selection method. Hierarchical clustering (HC) algorithm was used to capture the heterogeneity distribution of subjects. Average and similarity network fusion (SNF) algorithms were adopted to characterize the brain network atlas of different populations. Differences anal

IMoVR-Net: A robust interpretable network for multi-ocular lesion recognition from TAO facial images.

Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an organ-specific autoimmune disease that seriously affects patient's life and health. However, the early diagnosis of TAO is highly dependent on the physician's subjective experience. Moreover, the currently proposed deep learning networks for eye diseases do not provide robust interpretability concerning feature learning paradigm, model structure, and the number of neurons. But the mentioned components are very important for model interpretability and are key factors that severely affect the transparency of the model. Therefore, a robust interpretab

Patient variability in the blood-stage dynamics of Plasmodium falciparum captured by clustering historical data.

BACKGROUND: Mathematical models provide an understanding of the dynamics of a Plasmodium falciparum blood-stage infection (within-host model … ) clusters of patients (from 100 patients) that have a similar first wave of parasitaemia. For each cluster analysis, patients were clustered based on key features which previous models used to summarize parasitaemia dynamics. The clustering analyses were performed using a finite mixture model. The centroid values of the clusters were used to parameterize two esta …

Where Are the Newly Diagnosed HIV Positives in Kenya? Time to Consider Geo-Spatially Guided Targeting at a Finer Scale to Reach the "First 90".

Background: The UNAIDS 90-90-90 Fast-Track targets provide a framework for assessing coverage of HIV testing services (HTS) and awareness of HIV status - the "first 90." In Kenya, the bulk of HIV testing targets are aligned to the five highest HIV-burden counties. However, we do not know if most of the new HIV diagnoses are in these five highest-burden counties or elsewhere. Methods: We analyzed facility-level HTS data in Kenya from 1 October 2015 to 30 September 2016 to assess the spatial distribution of newly diagnosed HIV-positives. We used the Moran's Index (Moran's I) to assess global and

A computer-aided approach for automatic detection of breast masses in digital mammogram via spectral clustering and support vector machine.

Breast cancer continues to be a widespread health concern all over the world. Mammography is an important method in the early detection of breast abnormalities. In recent years, using an automatic Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system based on image processing techniques has been a more reliable interpretation in the illustration of breast distortion. In this study, a fully process-integrated approach with developing a CAD system is presented for the detection of breast masses based on texture description, spectral clustering, and Support Vector Machine (SVM). To this end, breast Regions of In

Bayesian consensus clustering for multivariate longitudinal data.

In clinical and epidemiological studies, there is a growing interest in studying the heterogeneity among patients based on longitudinal characteristics to identify subtypes of the study population. Compared to clustering a single longitudinal marker, simultaneously clustering multiple longitudinal markers allow additional information to be incorporated into the clustering process, which reveals co-existing longitudinal patterns and generates deeper biological insight. In the current study, we propose a Bayesian consensus clustering (BCC) model for multivariate longitudinal data. Instead of arr

Concordance of tumour characteristics and survival clustering among pairs of first-degree relatives with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Family history is a known risk factor for breast cancer, but its prognostic value and the prognostic value of tumour characteristics in relation to family history has not been clearly established. In addition, studies of intra-familial tumour characteristics and prognosis in population-based settings are very rare. Two previous studies have suggested that breast cancer prognosis clusters within families. However, both studies lack information on HER2 expression status, which is a strong prognostic factor and could contribute to the observed results. METHODS: We conducted a populat

Comparison of Extreme Learning Machine and K-Nearest Neighbour Performance in Classifying EEG Signal of Normal, Poor and Capable Dyslexic Children.

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty associated with brain capability in processing numbers and letters. Analysis of Electroencephalogram (EEG) could provide insight information on differences in brain processing. In this work, two machine learning techniques were applied to distinguish EEG signals of normal, poor and capable dyslexic children during writing word and non-word. The performance of k-nearest neighbour (KNN) with correlation distance function and extreme learning machine (ELM) with radial basis function (RBF) were compared. The performance of each classifier was determined u

[Radiological and statistical determination of the morphological type of the canine skull: dolichocephaly, mesocephaly and brachycephaly].

Cranio-encephalic morphology of three breeds of dogs (Greyhound, Pointer and Pekinese at the rate of 10 subjects, 5 males and 5 females, in each one) has been radiologically observed. Radiographic negatives in dorso-ventral and latero-lateral positions were taken and analyzed before and after the visualisation of the encephalic cavity using barium sulfate. 18 cranio-encephalic measurements were chosen and interpreted statistically. The results showed that certain variables were more closely correlated with morphologic types of the cranium than others. We discuss the validity of the data applie

A computational intelligence approach for classifying dental caries in X-ray images using integrated fuzzy C-means clustering with feature reduction and a weighted matrix scheme.

Classifying dental caries in X-ray images poses several challenges that must be addressed to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. However, dental X-rays often have low contrast, making it difficult to distinguish between healthy and decayed regions, especially in the early stages of caries. This paper uses computational intelligence to present a new approach to classifying dental caries in X-ray images. The traditional Fuzzy C-means (FCM) segmentation algorithms have limitations, such as treating all feature components equally important. This can lead to misclassificatio

Knowledge-guided Bayesian biclustering model for omics data with noisy graphs.

Extracting biologically meaningful information from high-dimensional, heterogeneous omics data is one of the key challenges in many biomedical studies. Among various biomedical applications, disease subtyping is of particular interest due to its critical role in improving diagnosis and designing personalized treatments. To address this, biclustering has become a widely used statistical method for subtyping. Additionally, it has been demonstrated across various statistical learning methods that incorporating biological graph knowledge such as gene regulatory network can significantly enhance va
