Effects of digital technology-based interventions on balance function and non-motor outcomes in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Various digital technologies have been adopted for rehabilitation training and extended care in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), yet their effectiveness remains unclear. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of digital technology-based interventions on balance and non-motor outcomes (cognitive function, depression, and quality of life) in individuals with PD. METHODS: We systematically searched six electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO) in March 2026. Two reviewers independently screened randomized controlled t

Addressing cognitive impairment in hypertensive patients: Risk factors and clinical implications.

Cognitive impairment is a major public health challenge, particularly among aging populations with hypertension. The study by Zuo and Yang provides valuable insights into the predictive risk factors for cognitive decline in hypertensive patients, utilizing a model with strong discriminative ability (AUC ROC: 0.802 in training set, 0.756 in test set). This letter highlights seven key risk factors identified in the study: gender, age, education level, poverty income ratio (PIR), depression, vigorous physical activity, and creatinine levels. Men exhibited a higher risk of cognitive impairment tha

Cognitive Interventions for Neurodegenerative Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To critically review recent research in the development of non-pharmacological interventions to improve cognitive functioning in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or Parkinson's disease (PD). RECENT FINDINGS: Cognitive interventions can be grouped into three categories: cognitive stimulation (CS), cognitive training (CT), and cognitive rehabilitation (CR). CS confers temporary, nonspecific benefits and might slightly reduce dementia risk for neurologically healthy individuals. CT can improve discrete cognitive functions, but durability is limited and real-world util…

Cognitive strategies involved in the discrimination of geometric angles.

Participants were trained and tested on their ability to discriminate among geometric angles presented to them as freestanding three-dimensional objects located within a larger experimental room. Three different angle sizes were used during training and participants were grouped based on their assigned training angle (110°, 135° or 160° angle), which they learned to discriminate from the remaining two angles. Following a learning phase, participants experienced test trials in which their training angle was paired with a novel test angle, and they made a choice between the two angles. Participa

Can immersive virtual reality magnify treatment outcomes of computerized script training on Cantonese speakers with chronic aphasia? Protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia persists in 20% of the stroke population. Speech therapy has been suggested to benefit the functional communication of people with aphasia (PWA). Virtual reality (VR) has been widely applied in motor/cognitive rehabilitation of stroke patients. The current proposal investigates the efficacy of VR-based computerized script training on the functional communication of PWA. METHODS: A three-armed assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial (RCT) will recruit 120 PWA. They will be randomly assigned to 1) VR-based computerized script training, 2) computerized script training wi

The Effects of Different Stages of Mindfulness Meditation Training on Emotion Regulation.

This study examined mood enhancement effects from 4-week focusing attention (FA) meditation and 4-week open monitoring (OM) meditation in an 8-week mindfulness training program designed for ordinary individuals. Forty participants were randomly assigned to a training group or a control group. All participants were asked to perform cognitive tasks and subjective scale tests at three time points (pre-, mid-, and post-tests). Compared with the participants in the control group, the participants in the meditation training group showed significantly decreased anxiety, depression, and rumination sco

Two-week virtual reality training for dementia: Single case feasibility study.

Persons with dementia (PWD) are known to have difficulty with participation and focus during physical activity. Virtual reality (VR) offers a unique medium for motor learning but has only been used previously for cognitive assessment for PWD. Our study had two objectives: (1) investigate the feasibility and safety of an exercise-based VR training program in PWD, and (2) investigate its effects on balance and mobility. The intervention consisted of daily (5 d/wk, 1 h each) VR training sessions for 2 wk for a single research participant. Clinical balance and mobility measures were assessed 1 wk

The treatment of social dysfunction in nonpsychotic outpatients. A review.

A sizable proportion (7 to 16 per cent) of psychiatric outpatients suffer from social dysfunction, either as the main complaint or in conjunction with other psychiatric problems. Social skills training is a newly evolved treatment regimen that involves teaching patients new forms of social behavior by their rehearsal within sessions and their practice in real life between sessions. In an overview of controlled studies, social skills training was found to have been useful for up to 16 months follow-up in mainly nonpsychotic socially dysfunctional outpatients. Its effects supersede "no-treatment

Boosting brainpower in ageing: Task-specific and transfer effects of tDCS-enhanced working memory training.

Ageing is associated with neural alterations that impair cognitive abilities, particularly working memory (WM), which is the capacity to temporarily store and manipulate information essential for daily functioning. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown promise in enhancing WM in older adults by modulating cortical excitability and promoting neuroplasticity. However, findings on the combined effects of tDCS and WM training remain inconsistent, especially regarding transfer of training gains to nontrained WM tasks (near-transfer effects). This study investigated the behavioura

Comparison of Different Exercise Modalities on Neuronal Plasticity and Spatial Memory.

PURPOSE: The relationship between exercise and brain function has been studied extensively; however, whether different exercise modalities promote hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive function through shared or distinct biological pathways remains unclear. This study examined the effects of endurance training (ET), resistance training (RT), and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on hippocampal neurogenesis, spatial memory, and neurotrophic factors. METHODS: Forty 3-month-old male C57BL/6J mice were randomized to control (SED), ET, RT, or HIIT groups. Following the training intervention

Frailty and Exercise Training: How to Provide Best Care after Cardiac Surgery or Intervention for Elder Patients with Valvular Heart Disease.

The aim of this literature review was to evaluate existing evidence on exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) as a treatment option for elderly frail patients with valvular heart disease (VHD). Pubmed database was searched for articles between 1980 and January 2018. From 2623 articles screened, 61 on frailty and VHD and 12 on exercise-based training for patients with VHD were included in the analysis. We studied and described frailty assessment in this patient population. Studies reporting results of exercise training in patients after surgical/interventional VHD treatment were analyzed re

Prospective clinical study of rehabilitation interventions with multisensory interactive training in patients with cerebral infarction: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Multisensory interactive training has an increasingly prominent role in stroke rehabilitation. Currently, there is insufficient evidence to demonstrate its efficacy on gait improvement, upper limb and lower limb functional improvement, global motor function and cognitive improvement. A recent Cochrane review confirmed that published studies on virtual reality (VR) training have the limitations of lack of powered sample size, did not evaluate the benefits over a long-term period and lacked trial quality on cognitive function. Another systematic review also concluded that the evidenc

Teleneurorehabilitation program (virtual reality) for patients with balance disorders: descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Balance disorders are common in patients with neurological or vestibular diseases. Telerehabilitation program is a treatment to be as safe as conventional treatment. One of the most used methods to perform telerehabilitation is the incorporation of Virtual Reality. In general, rehabilitation programs train predictive postural control, so the patient does not always acquire the necessary autonomy to react to situations of instability. On the other hand, the objective and systematic supervision and measurement of these programs is limited, making it necessary to create clinical proto

Enhancing brain age estimation with structural MRI and synthesized cerebral blood volume maps.

Brain age gap estimation (BrainAGE) is a promising imaging-derived biomarker of neurobiological ageing and disease risk, yet current approaches rely predominantly on T1-weighted structural MRI, overlooking functional vascular changes that may precede tissue damage and cognitive decline. Deep learning-derived cerebral blood volume (DeepCBV) maps, synthesized from non-contrast MRI, offer a scalable alternative to contrast-enhanced perfusion imaging by capturing vascular information relevant to early neurodegeneration. We developed a multimodal BrainAGE framework that combines predictions from tw

Levodopa improves motor deficits but can further disrupt cognition in a macaque Parkinson model.

BACKGROUND: Levodopa effectively relieves motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), but has had inconsistent effects on cognition, even worsening some aspects of cognitive functioning. Therefore, remediation of PD cognitive deficits is a major unmet need. However, drug development efforts have been hampered by lack of an animal model in which motor and cognitive deficits can be examined simultaneously. METHODS: Cynomolgus monkeys were trained to perform cognitive tasks and then chronically exposed to MPTP to slowly produce cognitive and motor deficits of parkinsonism. RESULTS: Administrati

MAP Training My Brain™: Meditation Plus Aerobic Exercise Lessens Trauma of Sexual Violence More Than Either Activity Alone.

Sexual violence against women often leads to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental illness characterized by intrusive thoughts and memories about the traumatic event (Shors and Millon, 2016). These mental processes are obviously generated by the brain but often felt in the body. MAP Training My Brain™ is a novel clinical intervention that combines mental training of the brain with physical training of the body (Curlik and Shors, 2013; Shors et al., 2014). Each training session begins with 20-min of sitting meditation, followed by 10-min of slow-walking meditation, and ending with 30-

Higher Short- and Long-Term Fluent Reading Abilities Following an Executive Functions-Based Reading Intervention Are Moderated by Executive Functions Improvement in Children With Reading Difficulties.

Previous studies have demonstrated how an executive functions-based reading training was related to improved reading and executive function abilities as well as changes in neural circuits underlying these abilities in children with reading disabilities and in typical readers. The executive components of this programme include visual attention, initiation, shifting/inhibition, speed of processing and working memory. Whether and which executive functions moderate these reading and cognitive effects in the short and long term remain elusive. This study aimed at assessing the short-term (immediate
