Peripheral blood leukocytes from guinea pigs infected with Coccidioides immitis 5 weeks previously were lysed significantly when incubated at 37 C for 3.5 hr with a concentrated C. immitis culture filtrate, but not with a concentrated Aspergillus fumigatus or Blastomyces dermatitidis culture filtrate. Mononuclear leukocytes and presumably granulocytes were both lysed. Characterization of the factor responsible for this leukocytolysis reaction revealed that it was contained in plasma and serum but not in leukocytes from infected guinea pigs. Indirect immunofluorescent (IF) tests on sections of normal human skin reveal the presence of antibodies to the stratum corneum in most normal human sera. Sera absorbed with hyperkeratotic scales gave negative reactions. There were 858 (37.7 percent) Q fever-infected dairy herds among the 2,277 tested in Illinois in 1963. The percentage decreased to 19.2 percent (380 of 1,975) in 1967. Reaction rates (complement-fixation test titer of 1:8 or greater) in serum samples from veterinarians decreased from 13.3 percent in 1956 to 3.9 percent in 1964 and from 3.6 percent in 1966 to 0 percent in 1968, 1970, 1972. In 14 observations of acute meningoencephalitis in children mainly under 3 years of the age, data pointing to an etiological role of herpes simplex type I virus, were obtained on laboratory examination. Six children died, and in the rest 8 children who survived gross residua were observed. The morphological picture showed extensive colliquation necroses in the parietal, temporal, and less frequently, in occipital lobes and the Varolian pons. In 4 cases out of 6 intranuclear inclusions were detected. The incidence of herpetic encephalitis was 16%.
