Impact of person-centred care training and person-centred activities on quality of life, agitation, and antipsychotic use in people with dementia living in nursing homes: A cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Agitation is a common, challenging symptom affecting large numbers of people with dementia and impacting on quality of life (QoL). There is an urgent need for evidence-based, cost-effective psychosocial interventions to improve these outcomes, particularly in the absence of safe, effective pharmacological therapies. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a person-centred care and psychosocial intervention incorporating an antipsychotic review, WHELD, on QoL, agitation, and antipsychotic use in people with dementia living in nursing homes, and to determine its cost. METHODS A

The Impact of Incentives on Data Collection for Online Surveys: Social Media Recruitment Study.

BACKGROUND: The use of targeted advertisements on social media platforms (eg, Facebook and Instagram) has become increasingly popular for recruiting participants for online survey research. Many of these surveys offer monetary incentives for survey completion in the form of gift cards; however, little is known about whether the incentive amount impacts the cost, speed, and quality of data collection. OBJECTIVE: This experiment addresses this gap in the literature by examining how different incentives in paid advertising campaigns on Instagram for completing a 10-minute online survey influence

Clinical application of a custom-made simple subcutaneous negative pressure drainage device for the treatment of SSI after abdominal surgery: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The current gold standard for managing surgical site infections (SSIs) is the vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) technique, also known as vacuum sealing drainage (VSD). However, its high cost and technical complexity necessitate specialized health care personnel for proper application and monitoring, thereby limiting its widespread clinical adoption. Building on the theoretical framework and mechanistic principles of VSD systems, we developed a simplified subcutaneous negative pressure drainage device and conducted a preliminary evaluation of its clinical efficacy and potential for broa

Mitigating heat stress in commercial broilers through feeding management approaches: Insights into growth, serum biochemical indices, meat quality, and gut histomorphology.

BACKGROUND: Heat stress (HS) significantly affects tropical broiler farming by impairing growth, physiology, meat quality, survival, and profitability. Since feed constitutes a major production cost, adopting feeding management approaches may reduce costs while enhancing bird resilience under HS without compromising productivity. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different feeding management approaches on growth, rectal temperature, water intake, serum biochemistry, meat quality, gut histomorphology, and profitability in heat-stressed broilers. METHODS: A total of 750 br

Trauma-focused EMDR for Personality disorders among Outpatients (TEMPO): study protocol for a multi-centre, single-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Existing recommended treatment options for personality disorders (PDs) are extensive and costly. There is emerging evidence indicating that trauma-focused treatment using eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy aimed at resolving memories of individuals' adverse events can be beneficial for this target group within a relatively short time frame. The primary purpose of the present study is to determine the effectiveness of EMDR therapy versus waiting list in reducing PD symptom severity. Furthermore, the effects of EMDR therapy on trauma symptom severity, loss o

Behavioural and cognitive-behavioural interventions for outwardly-directed aggressive behaviour in people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Outwardly-directed aggressive behaviour is a significant part of problem behaviours presented by people with intellectual disabilities. Prevalence rates of up to 50% have been reported in the literature, depending on the population sampled. Such behaviours often run a long-term course and are a major cause of social exclusion. This is an update of a previously published systematic review (see Hassiotis 2004; Hassiotis 2008). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of behavioural and cognitive-behavioural interventions on outwardly-directed aggressive behaviour in people with intellec

How climate, landscape, and economic changes increase the exposure of Echinococcus Spp.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is a global enzootic disease influenced by different biological and environmental factors and causes a heavy financial burden on sick families and governments. Currently, government subsidies for the treatment of patients with echinococcosis are only a fixed number despite patients' finical income or cost of treatment, and health authorities are demanded to supply an annual summary of only endemic data. The risk to people in urban areas or non-endemic is increasing with climate, landscape, and lifestyle changes. METHODS: We conducted retrospective descriptive resear

Economic burden and cost-effectiveness of brucellosis control strategies in large commercial dairy herds in Bangladesh: A Bayesian decision-analytic study.

Bovine brucellosis caused by Brucella abortus is endemic in Bangladesh, but its financial cost and the economics of control have not been quantified for the commercial dairy sector. We estimated the annual economic burden of infection in 17 large commercial dairy herds (194-2850 animals; 2696 animals tested), compared six control strategies over a 10-year economic horizon, and simulated a phased programme combining adult mass vaccination with subsequent test-and-cull. Herd-specific Bayesian posterior estimates of true prevalence and force of infection (FOI, the annual hazard of infection in a

Patient-reported outcome measures for monitoring primary care patients with depression: the PROMDEP cluster RCT and economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines on the management of depression recommend that practitioners use patient-reported outcome measures for the follow-up monitoring of symptoms, but there is a lack of evidence of benefit in terms of patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To test using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 questionnaire as a patient-reported outcome measure for monitoring depression, training practitioners in interpreting scores and giving patients feedback. DESIGN: Parallel-group, cluster-randomised superiority trial; 1 : 1 allocation to intervention and control. SETTING: UK primary care (141 group g

Gonadotrophins or clomiphene citrate in women with normogonadotropic anovulation and CC failure: does the endometrium matter?

STUDY QUESTION: Is endometrial thickness (EMT) a biomarker to select between women who should switch to gonadotropins and those who could continue clomiphene citrate (CC) after six failed ovulatory cycles? SUMMARY ANSWER: Using a cut-off of 7 mm for EMT, we can distinguish between women who are better off switching to gonadotropins and those who could continue CC after six earlier failed ovulatory CC cycles. WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN: For women with normogonadotropic anovulation, CC has been a long-standing first-line treatment in conjunction with intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI).

Findings of a pilot randomised controlled trial of an early psychiatric assessment, referral, and intervention study for intensive care patients.

INTRODUCTION: Intensive care unit (ICU) survivors can experience physical, cognitive, or psychological impairments that adversely affect long-term quality of life. The aim of this open-label, single-site, two-arm parallel, pilot randomised controlled trial was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of incorporating a psychiatric consultation into an existing post-ICU clinic. METHODS: Post-ICU clinic attendees were invited to participate. Consenting participants were allocated to either treatment as usual plus psychiatric review or treatment as usual using block randomisation. When attend

Co-designing, evaluating and implementing online supportive care for endometriosis in Australia: study protocol for the hybrid type 1 effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and implementation randomised controlled trial of the CodeEndo program.

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting up to 11% of people presumed female at birth by the age of 44 years, characterised by the growth of tissue similar to the lining of the uterus on other organs. Endometriosis significantly impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and imposes a substantial burden on both individuals and the healthcare system. International guidelines recommend the interdisciplinary management of endometriosis due to its significant biopsychosocial burden; however, research aimed at exploring psychological approaches for endometriosis is limited.

Community Health Workers for Primary Healthcare Access (COMPASS), integrating a comprehensive CHW intervention in primary healthcare in Belgium: a cluster-randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Inequality in access to Primary Health Care (PHC) is increasing in Belgium, in contrast to an overall decreasing trend throughout the European Union. A (cost-)effective solution for access-to-care challenges for people who experience challenges accessing primary healthcare (PECAP) in Belgium is needed; to address this knowledge gap, the research team drew on lessons from the CHW model in the Family Health Strategy (Brazil) and Re-engineering PHC (South Africa), in line with reciprocal innovation, to develop the Community Health Workers for Primary Healthcare Access (COMPASS) interv

The influence of powered prostheses on user perspectives, metabolics, and activity: a randomized crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Powered prosthetic ankles provide battery-powered mechanical push-off, with the aim of reducing the metabolic demands of walking for people with transtibial amputations. The efficacy of powered ankles has been shown in active, high functioning individuals with transtibial amputation, but is less clear in other populations. Additionally, it is unclear how use of a powered prosthesis influences everyday physical activity and mobility. METHODS: Individuals with unilateral transtibial amputations participated in a randomized clinical trial comparing their prescribed, unpowered prosthe

HELP@APP: development and evaluation of a self-help app for traumatized Syrian refugees in Germany - a study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Syrians represent the largest group among refugees in Germany. Many of them were exposed to sequential traumatizing events including war, escape and post-migration stressors, which significantly increase the risk to develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress and other mental disorders. However, there is a lack of adequate treatment options for traumatized refugees in Germany. Moreover, their access to psychosocial care is often restricted due to legal regulation, language barriers, and unclear cost coverage. We therefore aim to develop a low-threshold supportive self-help app for Syr

Does Adding Mindfulness to Instability Resistance Training Enhance Dual-Task Mobility and Fall-Related Outcomes in Older Adults with Motoric Cognitive Risk Syndrome? A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) exhibit impairments in dual-task mobility. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as physical exercise and cognitive strategies, have been proposed to mitigate physical and cognitive decline. However, the effectiveness of combining these approaches remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of instability resistance training (IRT) performed with or without mindfulness on mobility under single- and dual-task conditions and fall-related outcomes in older adults with MCR. METHODS: In this parallel-group randomized con
