People who are incarcerated or have a history of incarceration have high rates of dental disease, but access to dental treatment is often a challenge during and after incarceration. Dental students' exposure to this population is unknown: no data exist regarding the number of schools that provide didactic and clinical training in correctional dentistry. The aim of this study was to assess the extent of instruction in correctional dentistry and clinical opportunities at correctional facilities for dental students in the U.S. A survey was distributed to the academic deans at all 66 U.S. dental s

Collaborative learning is a widely used instructional method, but the learning potential of this instructional method is often underused in practice. Therefore, the importance of various factors underlying effective collaborative learning should be determined. In the current study, five different life sciences undergraduate courses with successful collaborative-learning results were selected. This study focuses on factors that increased the effectiveness of collaboration in these courses, according to the students. Nine focus group interviews were conducted and analyzed. Results show that fact

AIM: Student tutorials are now firmly anchored in medical education. However, to date there have only been isolated efforts to establish structured teacher training for peer tutors in medicine. To close this gap, a centralized tutor training program for students, culminating in an academic certificate, was implemented at Heidelberg University Medical School. The program also counts within the scope of the post-graduate Baden-Württemberg Certificate in Academic Teaching (Baden-Württemberg Zertifikat für Hochschuldidaktik).
METHOD: Based on a needs assessment, a modular program comprised of fou

By the upper elementary grades, writing becomes an essential tool both for learning and for showing what you know. Students who struggle significantly with writing are at a terrible disadvantage. Data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress indicate that only 25% of students can be classified as competent writers; students with learning disabilities (LD) have even greater problems with writing than their normally achieving peers and frequently demonstrate a deteriorating attitude toward writing after the primary grades. In this article, we focus on composing and the writing proces

Research is clear on the benefit of early intervention efforts and the importance of intensive instructional supports; however, understanding which features to intensify is less clear. General intervention features of group size, instructional delivery, and time are areas schools can consider manipulating to intensify instruction. Also, each of these features can vary along a continuum making them easier or more challenging for schools to implement. What is unclear is if implementing very intensive interventions early in school (first grade), which require significantly more school resources,

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether educators consider electronic patient record (EPR)-related education necessary and if so, what subjects have to be taught more extensively in the future.
METHODS: A list of possibly relevant subjects was determined from the literature. A questionnaire was designed which contained those subjects and the respondents were asked to indicate, for each subject, its competency level and required competency level in current teaching. Since the response rate was low a second questionnaire was developed to have the results of the analysis of the first questionnaire valid

Medical schools and specialty societies have struggled to define a core content for medical students and practitioners but, to date, have been stymied by both political considerations and the sheer burden of the innumerable decisions that must be made to define the essence of a medical specialty. Six professional organizations representing the field of emergency medicine recently collaborated with the National Board of Medical Examiners to accomplish this objective by developing a Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine. This document will provide support for the development of me

The American Board of Medical Specialties recently approved the concept of certificates of added qualifications in geriatrics within both internal medicine and family practice. Certification requirements have been worked out for each training model, and questions have quite naturally arisen addressing whether the developing family practice model is substantially different from the longer established internal medicine model. A survey was made of 12 family practice based geriatric fellowship programs. Program directors were asked how they felt family practice geriatrics differed from internal me

STUDY QUESTION: How were the logbook and curriculum for the Nurses and Midwives Certification Programme of ESHRE developed?
SUMMARY ANSWER: The logbook and corresponding curriculum for the ESHRE Nurses and Midwives Certification Programme were based on an extensive literature review, an international expert panel, and a survey of Belgian and Dutch nurses and midwives (N&M) working in reproductive medicine (RM).
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: ESHRE has been running a certification programme for N&M working in RM since 2015. To the best of our knowledge, clinical practice guidelines for nursing/midwif…

Explicit training in clinical reasoning and rational decision-making improves the quality of diagnostic judgments, patient safety, and the ethical dimension of decisions by strengthening metacognition, enriching illness scripts built from clinical practice, and incorporating patients' values. To be effective, it should rely on a longitudinal curriculum, active strategies (deliberate practice, SNAPPS+, one-minute preceptor, test-enhanced learning), and a climate of cognitive safety. The challenge is to structure such teaching within clinical environments under heavy time pressure, workload and …

Oncoplastic breast surgery (OPBS) combines oncologic resection with immediate reconstructive techniques to optimize disease control and patient-reported outcomes. Despite growing recognition of OPBS as standard care for many breast cancer presentations, training remains inconsistent internationally and curricula are rarely standardized. This manuscript, the Preoperative Curriculum of a three-part series, defines the essential preoperative knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for safe, patient-centered OPBS practice and provides guidance on learning environments and assessment. It centrali…

Racial health disparities are tightly linked to the longstanding and pervasive institution of racism. Efforts to reverse disparities begin with awareness and accountability through education. The health care workforce must be formally educated about racist practices, tools, and ideologies that perpetuate poor health outcomes. This article explores prior efforts to integrate race didactics into medical school education, addresses current legislation, and illuminates lessons learned from a single institution pilot curriculum exploring the history of racism in the field of obstetrics and gynecolo…

Approximately 50 million children and adolescents in Latin America are affected by the childhood obesity pandemic. We present the case of a 5-year-old Mexican girl with obesity and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), in whom prenatal, lifestyle and environmental risk factors were identified. Here, we demonstrate how childhood obesity is rooted since pregnancy and the perinatal stage, and how the social determinants of health like unsafe outdoor conditions, lack of infrastructure to exercise and a suboptimal physical activity curriculum in government schools strongly influence the develop…
