The present study reports a case of an occult basal cell carcinoma that arose in seborrheic keratosis. The patient was a fifty-six-year-old male who presented with a dark brown plaque on his back. Clinically, the lesion demonstrated no nodules or ulcerations suggesting that it was malignant. However, histopathological analysis of the lesion revealed an atypical basaloid cell mass that appeared to be a solid basal cell carcinoma beneath and surrounded by a seborrheic keratosis lesion. Twenty-five patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis localised to the face were treated with bifonazole cream once daily for 4 weeks. Twenty-one (84%) were free of lesions, 2 improved and in 2 no improvement was seen. Bifonazole is not only an effective antimycotic agent, it also has anti-inflammatory activities and this combination may be beneficial in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Objective assessment of seborrhea of the scalp has seldom been reported in the literature. We have used a variant of the method described by Saint-Léger and Lévêque to measure the sebum excretion rate in normal scalp, male pattern alopecia, pityriasis amiantacea, pityriasis capitis and alopecia areata. The sebum excretion rate was significantly increased in male pattern alopecia, significantly decreased in pityriasis amiantacea and showed a trend towards reduction in alopecia areata. Pityriasis capitis was not associated with changes in the excretion of sebum.

The authors present a case of pachydermoperiostosis (digital hippocratism, periostosis, pachydermia) associated with acro-osteolysis. This is the first association of this type described in Italy, and it is only recently that foreign authors have reported the presence of acro-osteolysis in patients affected with pachydermoperiostosis. The results obtained from studies of the micro and macro circulation in pachydermoperiostosis are reported.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis of the face was observed in 28 of 347 patients treated with PUVA for psoriasis. The facial lesions appeared after discontinuation of PUVA, and had not been present at the start of PUVA treatment. They were prevented by masking the face during irradiation.

An 88-year-old woman who developed a nodule in a lesion of seborrheic keratosis on the frontal scalp was observed. Histopathologically, the nodule was characterized by lobular acanthosis consisting of glycogen rich clear cells and squamoid cells with squamous eddies and melanin blockade melanocytes. Methods for the determination of glutathione in small epidermal and tumor fragments are compared. The best results were obtained by an enzymatic cycling technique. The total glutathione concentrations in basal cell epithelioma, squamous cell epithelioma, and verruca seborrhoeica were 2.08, 1.81, and 1.87 mg/g dry weight, respectively. In normal epidermis adjacent to the basal cell epitheliomas the concentration was 1.27 mg/g dry weight.
