OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities in the gut microbiota and intestinal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels are implicated in the pathogenesis of functional constipation (FC). Electro-acupuncture (EA) has been shown to improve constipation-related symptoms and rebalance the gut microbiota. However, it is currently unknown whether the gut microbiota is a key mechanistic target for EA or how EA promotes gut motility by regulating the gut microbiota and SCFAs. Therefore, we assessed the effects of EA in FC mice and pseudo-germfree (PGF) mice to address these questions.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders have been identified globally as the second most common healthcare problem for 'years lived with disability', and of these shoulder conditions are amongst the most common, frequently associated with substantial pain and morbidity. AIM: To investigate the acupuncture-modulated gastric motility and its underlying neural mechanism.
METHODS: Intragastric pressure and/or waves of gastric contraction in rats were recorded by intrapyloric balloon and changes of gastric motility induced by acupuncture stimulation were compared with the background activity before any stimulation. This case series reviews my experience in providing acupuncture treatment to inpatients at a midwestern, tertiary care, university teaching hospital. I review 4 cases, including patients with torticollis, ileus, brain injury, and intractable migraine. The lessons learned from each of these cases are summarized, and the implications for the development of an inpatient acupuncture service are discussed.
