Pruritogenic mediators in psoriasis vulgaris: comparative evaluation of itch-associated cutaneous factors.

BACKGROUND: Although some patients with psoriasis vulgaris also complain of severe pruritus, the data available regarding pruritus in psoriasis are sparse. OBJECTIVES: To clarify the mechanism and mediators involved in the pruritus of psoriasis vulgaris, we compared itch-associated factors in lesional skin from psoriatic patients vs. skin without pruritus quantitatively using a panel of histological and immunohistological parameters. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Biopsied specimens were obtained from 38 patients with psoriasis vulgaris who were divided into two groups according to the presence or ab

Are personnel in transplant hospitals in favor of cadaveric organ donation? Multivariate attitudinal study in a hospital with a solid organ transplant program.

INTRODUCTION: A considerable number of professionals who work in a hospital could be against organ donation, which means that when the time comes, they could act as an obstacle to donation. The objective of this study was to analyze the attitude of hospital professionals toward organ donation and to determine the factors that influence this attitude in a Spanish center with a transplant program. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was carried out in a third-level Spanish hospital with a solid organ transplant program. A random sample was taken (n = 1262) and stratified by job category and type o

Neurologic and cardiac progression of glycogenosis type VII over an eight-year period.

Little is known about the progression of phosphofructokinase deficiency (glycogenosis type VII, Tarui's disease). We describe a 66-year-old woman who had this disease diagnosed in 1997. Initial manifestations had included simple partial seizures since 1977, anginal chest pain since 1982, and muscle cramps since 1983. To prevent recurrent myocardial infarction, anticoagulation therapy with phenprocumon was initiated. Cardiac involvement progressed over an 8-year period, manifesting as low-voltage electrocardiogram (ECG), ectopic supraventricular tachycardia, thickened mitral valve, mitral valve

Glucose infusion paradoxically accelerates degradation of adenine nucleotide in working muscle of patients with glycogen storage disease type VII.

We investigated the effect of glucose infusion on adenosine triphosphate degradation in skeletal muscle of patients with glycogen storage disease type VII. Three patients and six healthy subjects exercised on a bicycle ergometer twice, once with 20% glucose infusion and once with saline infusion. The glucose infusion increased plasma glucose levels to 170 to 182 mg/dl and serum insulin levels to 30 to 50 microU/ml, while it markedly decreased plasma free fatty acid levels. The exercise-induced increases in plasma ammonia, inosine, and hypoxanthine were much larger with glucose than with saline

Dietary induced subclinical vitamin K deficiency in normal human subjects.

A subclinical vitamin K deficiency was induced in 32 healthy subjects (four groups of eight males and females) aged 20-40 and 60-80 yr resid … riod had no significant effect on either prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin times, or Factor VII and protein C (as determined by antigenic and functional assays). By using a monoclonal antibody, decarboxy prothrombin was found to increase slightly but significantly in both groups (P < 0.05) as a consequence of the low vitamin K1 diet. This stud …

Are changes in cardiovascular disease risk factors in midlife women due to chronological aging or to the menopausal transition?

OBJECTIVES: This prospective study examined whether changes in traditional and novel coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors are greater within a year of the final menstrual period (FMP), relative to changes that occur before or after that interval, in a multiethnic cohort. BACKGROUND: Understanding the influence of menopause on CHD risk remains elusive and has been evaluated primarily in Caucasian samples. METHODS: SWAN (Study of Women's Health Across the Nation) is a prospective study of the menopausal transition in 3,302 minority (African American, Hispanic, Japanese, or Chinese) and Ca

Regulatory T-cell dysfunction induces autoantibodies to bullous pemphigoid antigens in mice and human subjects.

BACKGROUND: Regulatory T (Treg) cells play a crucial role in peripheral immune tolerance in multiple organs, including the skin. Thus far, the effect of peripheral immune tolerance failure on autoantibody-related autoimmune reactions to the skin is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We sought to elucidate the target autoantigens in the skin under the condition of Treg cell dysfunction caused by forkhead box P3 (Foxp3) gene mutations in scurfy mice and patients with immunodysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome. METHODS: Sera and skin from scurfy mice and sera from patients

Application of Human Genetics to Prioritize Coagulation Cascade Protein Targets for Ischemic Stroke Prevention.

BACKGROUND: While interindividual variations in concentration and function of coagulation cascade proteins are established risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE), their associations with arterial ischemic stroke are less well defined. METHODS: We identified and validated genetic proxies for lifelong, randomized perturbations of coagulation cascade proteins in genome-wide association studies of circulating protein levels (deCODE, n=35 559; UK Biobank, n=46 218) and of VTE risk (81 190 cases and 1 419 671 controls). Study participants were all of European ancestry. We performed 2-sample

Epidemiological indicators of accidental laboratory-origin outbreaks.

Accidental escapes of pathogens from laboratories continue to cause outbreaks in the community today, posing significant risks to the general public, animal communities and the environment. These incidents, as well as the uncertainties surrounding the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlight the need to consider unnatural origins as part of emerging outbreak surveillance and detection. Identifying recurring patterns and distinctive factors of laboratory-associated disease outbreaks can aid in successfully preventing and mitigating these occurrences. Seventy incidents of laboratory-associate

Evaluation of Factors Affecting Fluoride Release from Dental Sealants: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Fluoride-releasing sealants play a crucial role in caries prevention by providing both mechanical protection and controlled ion release. However, the rate and duration of fluoride emission vary depending on material composition and environmental conditions. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to identify and analyze factors influencing fluoride release and recharge capacity from contemporary dental sealants. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in September 2025 across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and WorldCat using the keywords "fluoride rel

Household dietary gatekeepers' perceptions of home cooking and its associated factors: A qualitative inquiry from urban India.

The high consumption of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor meals from out of home sources has been identified as a potential risk factor for the growing burden of obesity and diet-related chronic degenerative diseases among urban Indians. Consumption of home cooked meals is linked with positive dietary and health outcomes. However, little is known about the views of Indians regarding home cooking. Therefore, this investigation was designed to qualitatively explore urban Indian nutritional gatekeepers' perceptions of home cooking and the factors influencing it. The social constructivism theoretical f

Barriers to malaria prevention services in pregnancy: a multi-methods study in rural western Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Malaria in pregnancy (MiP) remains a substantial public health problem, accounting for a large proportion of adverse outcomes for both mothers and developing child in endemic areas. Although interventions such as intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) have been shown to be effective, uptake remains suboptimal. This study aimed to identify factors associated with MiP among pregnant women at their initial antenatal visit and to explore perceptions of MiP among both midwives and pregnant women in the community to identify barriers to the utilization of available prevent

Human amniotic mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosome inhibits ferroptosis through the suppression of JNK/MAPK-mediated EGR1 expression in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) represents an essential part of stroke, wherein ferroptosis is identified as a critical factor leading to the pathogenesis. Symptomatical treatments are mainly adopted which tend to leave severe neurological deficits. Recently, human amniotic mesenchymal stem cell (hAMSC) therapy has developed rapidly in the field of regenerative medicine, with its secreted exosomes (hAMSC-Exos) regarded as effective alternatives owing to the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Therefore, we aim to explore the therapeutic efficacy as well as mo

Unusual presentation of a hepatocellular carcinoma as a potential late side effect of radiotherapy in a patient treated for Wilms tumor in childhood.

BACKGROUND: The development of a second primary tumor is a potential late side effect of radiotherapy. Particularly, an increased risk of secondary cancers, mostly of digestive or breast origin, has been observed in patients treated with high-dose radiotherapy for Wilms tumor (WT) in childhood. However, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been very rarely described as a potentially radiotherapy-induced tumor. We describe the case of a patient with an aggressive HCC 50 years after the treatment of a WT. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year old man, treated at the age of 6 weeks for a right WT by a righ
