Feeding of Undocked Pigs: Effects of Feed Components and Feed Composition.

Tail biting is a widespread problem in pig production worldwide and a major cause of reduced welfare in pigs. To prevent this harmful behavior, it is a common practice to optimize husbandry and enrich the environment with organic materials. Fiber-rich materials such as straw, hay, or alfalfa reduce tail biting. These observations were also made for swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome (SINS), which causes acral necrosis and increase the risk for tail biting. A supplementation of the diet with straw and hay significantly reduced systemic inflammation in pigs. Organic materials and feed comp

A prospective study of the feeding and brushing practices of WIC mothers: six- and twelve-month data and ethnicity and familial variables.

This study, part of a project that provided a baby cup to WIC children in Washington State, reports the feeding and brushing behaviors at six and twelve months and the influence of cultural and familial variables. Results show there are large differences in feeding and brushing practices among ethnic groups, i.e., Asian mothers reported the greatest reliance on the bottle at twelve months. Marital status was related to feeding practices, i.e., single women were more likely to put the baby to bed with a bottle at six and twelve months and were more likely to use a cup at twelve months. The pres

Spraying calcium chloride helps to enhance the resistance of kidney bean plants to western flower thrips.

BACKGROUND: The western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a significant pest in horticulture and ornamental agriculture. While exogenous calcium (Ca) has been shown to confer plant immune responses against thrips, the detailed mechanisms of this interaction remain to be elucidated for improved thrips management strategies. This study aimed to assess the impact of exogenous Ca on WFT feeding behavior and to explore its role in enhancing the defense mechanisms of kidney bean plants against WFT attacks. We compared WFT feeding preferences and efficiency…

Scheduled feeding improves sleep in a mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Sleep disturbances are common features of neurodegenerative disorders including Huntington's disease (HD). Sleep and circadian disruptions are recapitulated in animal models, providing the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of circadian interventions as countermeasures for neurodegenerative disease. For instance, time restricted feeding (TRF) successfully improved activity rhythms, sleep behavior and motor performance in mouse models of HD. Seeking to determine if these benefits extend to physiological measures of sleep, electroencephalography (EEG) was used to measure sleep/wake states

Host choice and West Nile virus infection rates in blood-fed mosquitoes, including members of the Culex pipiens complex, from Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee, 2002-2003.

The source of bloodmeals in 2,082 blood-fed mosquitoes collected from February 2002 through December 2003 in Memphis and surrounding areas o … temporal analysis of the feeding patterns of the dominant Culex species did not support a shift in feeding behavior away from robins to mammals late in the summer. However, a significant degree of temporal variation was noted in the proportion of robin-derived bloodmeals when the data were analyzed by semi-monthly periods throughout the summers of 2002 and 2003. …

On Pachycephalosaurs, Trade-Offs, and the Historical Genesis of Sociosexual Display Structures.

AbstractThe evolution of feeding performance traits is often inferred to reflect adaptation to dietary resources, but the role of constraint and trade-offs with other traits is rarely explored. Here, we focus on feeding performance in pachycephalosaurs, a group of Late Cretaceous dinosaurs known for their cranial dome. The bony dome is thought to be a sociosexual display structure, but we hypothesize that its presence constrained the space for jaw adductor musculature and reduced the angle of these muscles, thereby reducing feeding performance. We test this by reconstructing the cranial muscul

Bacteria in stable fly (Diptera: Muscidae) feces inform foraging decisions of conspecific flies.

Blood-feeding stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), are reportedly attracted to conspecific feces. We investigated whether stable flies are attracted to fly feces-derived bacteria, and whether attraction varies with bacterial species and growth substrate, and the sex and reproductive status of foraging flies. We isolated seven bacterial species from fecal deposits of stable flies. In laboratory two-choice bioassays with paired adhesive-coated traps baited with sterile agar or bacteria-inoculated agar, the seven bacterial species in combination repelled flies. However, the bacterial congeners

Does glochidia infestation of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) affect foraging behavior and growth in brown trout (Salmo trutta)?

Fish serve as hosts to a wide range of parasites, which can affect them in many ways, including their survival, growth, and foraging behavior. The highly threatened unionid mussels have an ectoparasitic life stage on the gills, skin, or fins of fish. Here, we compared prey handling time and growth between groups of brown trout (Salmo trutta) that were infested and non-infested with glochidia larvae of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera). In a prey handling test, individual trout were presented with one large prey (maggot) and one small prey (Gammarus pulex) daily over eig

[Consumption of ultraprocessed foods : key factors and challenges].

Ultraprocessed foods (UPF) play an increasingly important role in modern diets and are associated with a higher risk of chronic illnesses. This article introduces the Nova classification system and evaluates the socioeconomic factors that influence the consumption of UPFs. The individual, socioeconomic, environmental, cultural, and political factors that shape eating habits are also explored. In addition, the other factors influencing UPF eating habits, such as increased availability, affordability, convenience, and marketing strategies, are described. Despite some conflicting scientific evide

Hunger, satiety, and eating behavior after craniopharyngioma - narrative review on current management and future therapeutic perspectives.

Craniopharyngiomas are low-grade, intracranial tumors frequently associated with dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary axes and the development of obesity. This narrative review aimed to evaluate the potential contribution of eating behaviors, while also identifying perspectives for future therapeutic intervention. Searches were performed across five bibliographic databases. All peer-reviewed published studies involving childhood-onset or adult-onset craniopharyngioma populations were considered eligible when they examined eating behavior in relation to pharmacological or surgical interven

Assessing periodontitis risk from specific dietary patterns: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: Our goal is to perform a meta-analysis to investigate the risk of periodontitis associated with specific dietary patterns. METHODS: We employed the PRISMA methodology in a meta-analysis to examine the correlation between dietary patterns and the risk of periodontitis. We systematically searched three online databases from inception to November 2024 to identify relevant studies. Summary estimates with 95%CI were calculated to assess the relationship between specific dietary patterns and the risk of periodontitis. Cumulative estimates were synthesized using random-effects or fixed-effects

The 5 A's Approach to Promoting Nutrition Counseling in Primary Care.

Poor dietary habits are a major contributor to chronic disease burden, yet nutrition counseling remains underutilized in primary care settings despite proven effectiveness. This article presents a novel adaptation of the 5 A's framework (Assess, Advise, Agree, Assist, Arrange) titled 'The 5 A's Approach to Promoting Nutrition Counseling in Primary Care', by incorporating validated assessment tools and evidence-based strategies to support implementation in clinical settings. To address practical challenges, implementation approaches are proposed including alternative delivery and payment models

Integrated data on the taxon and morpho-specific year-round diet and endozoochorous seed dispersal by the world's largest grouse, the Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus.

Recent developments in molecular methods for fecal analysis to assess the food habits (scatology) of herbivores have been controversial in terms of accurately identifying which specific plant parts were consumed and quantifying the amount of food ingested. To address this critical issue, traditional methods should be used to describe a multi-component plant diet that expresses the contribution of taxon-specific morphologically differentiated plant parts. Here we present quantitative data from our original high-resolution taxon- and morpho-specific dietary study based on cuticle microhistologic

Chewing performance and the structure of primate communities.

Ecomorphological theory predicts a relationship between the morphology of a given trait and its ecological performance. In turn, variation in ecomorphology is viewed as integral to the structuring of animal communities. This reasoning is practically axiomatic, but the full logic chain is seldom integrated into a single study. We tested the functional relationship between premolar tooth size and chewing performance across a diverse community of wild primates, including chimpanzees and seven monkey species. We found that relatively large premolars were associated with improved food fracture, and

A mechanical perspective on suction feeding in fishes.

Suction feeding in fish has long fascinated experimental biologists because of its complex motions, intricate anatomy and vast distribution across thousands of species and nearly every aquatic habitat. Suction feeding poses three main mechanical challenges for fish. First, how do shortening muscles create three-dimensional (3D) expansion of the mouth cavity to suck in water? Second, how do muscles produce the substantial power required for fast and forceful expansion to accelerate food and water into the mouth? Third, how is water moved through the mouth so that food can be deposited in the oe

The Unrestrained Overeating Behavior and Clinical Perspective.

Obesity-related co-morbidities decrease life quality, reduce working ability, and lead to early death. In the adult population, eating addiction manifests with excessive food consumption and the unrestrained overeating behavior, which is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality and defined as the binge eating disorder (BED). This hedonic intake is correlated with fat preference and the total amount of dietary fat consumption is the most potent risk factor for weight gain. Long-term BED leads to greater sensitivity to the rewarding effects of palatable foods and results in obes

Are female athlete specific health considerations being assessed and addressed in preparticipation examinations? A scoping review and proposed framework.

BACKGROUND: Preparticipation examinations (PPEs) are unstandardized screening tools routinely used to collect an athlete's baseline health information prior to the start of a new competitive season. However, many PPEs include minimal and often nonspecific questions related to the health concerns of female athletes. A lack of female athlete specific health questions could result in missed red flags and subsequent injury or illness. As such, the objectives of this scoping review were to (a) determine what female athlete specific health questions currently exist in PPEs in the scientific literatu

Walking kinematics of ants carrying food in the mandibles versus gaster.

Episodic or paroxysmal movement disorders (PxMD) are conditions, which occur episodically, are transient, usually have normal interictal periods, and are characterized by hyperkinetic disorders, including ataxia, chorea, dystonia, and ballism. Broadly, these comprise paroxysmal dyskinesias (paroxysmal kinesigenic and non-kinesigenic dyskinesia [PKD/PNKD], paroxysmal exercise-induced dyskinesias [PED]) and episodic ataxias (EA) types 1-9. Classification of paroxysmal dyskinesias has traditionally been clinical. However, with advancement in genetics and the discovery of the molecular basis of se

Applications and efficacy of radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO DBT): A systematic review of the literature.

Radically open dialectical behaviour therapy (RO DBT) is a transdiagnostic treatment, originally developed as a variant of dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), that emerged as a novel treatment approach for those presenting with excessive or maladaptive overcontrol. Despite RO DBT's growing popularity among clinicians as a treatment for chronic depression, personality disorders and eating disorders, to date, no systematic review has been conducted to summarise the evidence on this therapy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to systematically review the literature to provide a current and com
