Automatic diagnosis of abnormal macula in retinal optical coherence tomography images using wavelet-based convolutional neural network features and random forests classifier.

The present research intends to propose a fully automatic algorithm for the classification of three-dimensional (3-D) optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans of patients suffering from abnormal macula from normal candidates. The method proposed does not require any denoising, segmentation, retinal alignment processes to assess the intraretinal layers, as well as abnormalities or lesion structures. To classify abnormal cases from the control group, a two-stage scheme was utilized, which consists of automatic subsystems for adaptive feature learning and diagnostic scoring. In the first stage, a

Impact of cone-beam computed tomography scan mode on the diagnostic yield of chemically simulated external root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the influence of cone-beam computed tomography scans on the diagnosis of chemically simulated external root resorption. METHODS: One hundred extracted anterior teeth were selected. Subsurface demineralization was induced on a limited area of the apical third of the root of 49 teeth. Each tooth was placed in an empty socket of a partially edentulous dry mandible. Cone-beam computed tomography images were obtained according to 3 protocols: (1) half scan, 0.40-mm voxel size; (2) full scan, 0.40-mm voxel size; and (3) full scan, 0.125-m

Systematic method for initial rapid analysis of maxillofacial computed tomography scans for surgeons in training.

BACKGROUND: Reading maxillofacial computed tomography (CT) scans is a basic skill for any surgeon who operates on the face. A standard systematic approach for how to read a maxillofacial CT scan from a surgeon's perspective is lacking in literature, particularly for those in the early stages of training. We present a method of initial rapid analysis which our residents in training have responded to and report to be conceptually simple to apply. METHODS: The senior author reviewed over 250 consults for face trauma and performed a detailed composite of the most common elements of each consult a

Functional lengths of the lower limb arterial tree measured by CT angiography centreline analysis: implications for catheter lengths in peripheral angioplasty.

PURPOSE: Lower limb angioplasty is a common procedure. However, arterial lengths have not been well studied and there is no evidence base for the optimum catheter lengths required for the various applications of femoral or distal below-the-knee angioplasty. The industry standard catheter measures 80 cm. METHOD: Fifty CT angiograms were post-processed using vessel tracking and centreline analysis tools and lengths were measured from the ipsilateral first segment of the femoral artery (FSFA) (common femoral artery) to the contralateral FSFA and on to the second segment of the femoral artery (su

Automatic detection of abnormal breast thermograms using asymmetry analysis of texture features.

Thermography is a non-invasive imaging modality that represents surface temperature variations of the skin in the form of images called thermograms. The surface temperature around the area of cancerous cells is slightly higher than normal tissues and this area is seen as hot spots on thermograms. In normal breast thermograms, symmetric heat patterns are observed in both breasts, but in the case of unilateral abnormality, asymmetry is observed. As the intensity variations in thermograms represent surface temperature changes, texture features that would enhance thermal asymmetry, between right a

Dual-energy CT: a promising new technique for assessment of the musculoskeletal system.

OBJECTIVE: Dual-energy CT (DECT) characterizes the chemical composition of material according to its differential x-ray attenuation at two different energy levels. Applications of DECT in musculoskeletal imaging include imaging of bone marrow edema, tendons, and ligaments and the use of monoenergetic techniques to minimize metal prosthesis beam-attenuating artifacts. CONCLUSION: The most validated application of DECT is undoubtedly its noninvasive and highly specific ability for confirming the presence of monosodium urate deposits in the assessment of gout.

Congenital atresia of the left main coronary artery: cardiac CT.

Congenital coronary artery disease is a rare occurrence, and atresia of the left main is one of the least frequently observed variations. In a recent review of 1,950 angiograms, 110 congenital coronary anomalies were seen, and of those, only 13 cases represented an absent left main coronary artery (LMCA). This case is of a 53-year-old male who initially presented 2 years prior for atypical chest pain. The anatomy described in this case is typical for LMCA atresia. Cardiac CT was used to demonstrate the anomaly.

Reconstruction of cell population dynamics using CFSE.

BACKGROUND: Quantifying cell division and death is central to many studies in the biological sciences. The fluorescent dye CFSE allows the tracking of cell division in vitro and in vivo and provides a rich source of information with which to test models of cell kinetics. Cell division and death have a stochastic component at the single-cell level, and the probabilities of these occurring in any given time interval may also undergo systematic variation at a population level. This gives rise to heterogeneity in proliferating cell populations. Branching processes provide a natural means of descri

Image-based modeling reveals dynamic redistribution of DNA damage into nuclear sub-domains.

Several proteins involved in the response to DNA double strand breaks (DSB) form microscopically visible nuclear domains, or foci, after exposure to ionizing radiation. Radiation-induced foci (RIF) are believed to be located where DNA damage occurs. To test this assumption, we analyzed the spatial distribution of 53BP1, phosphorylated ATM, and gammaH2AX RIF in cells irradiated with high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation and low LET. Since energy is randomly deposited along high-LET particle paths, RIF along these paths should also be randomly distributed. The probability to induce DSB can

Curved planar reformatting and convolutional neural network-based segmentation of the small bowel for visualization and quantitative assessment of pediatric Crohn's disease from MRI.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced MRI of the small bowel is an effective imaging sequence for the detection and characterization of disease burden in pediatric Crohn's disease (CD). However, visualization and quantification of disease burden requires scrolling back and forth through 3D images to follow the anatomy of the bowel, and it can be difficult to fully appreciate the extent of disease. PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate a method that offers better visualization and quantitative assessment of CD from MRI. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Twenty-three pediatric patients with CD. A Segmentation Method of Foramen Ovale Based on Multiatlas.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a neurological disease. It is often treated by puncturing the trigeminal nerve through the skin and the oval foramen of the skull to selectively destroy the pain nerve. The process of puncture operation is difficult because the morphology of the foramen ovale in the skull base is varied and the surrounding anatomical structure is complex. Computer-aided puncture guidance technology is extremely valuable for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Computer-aided guidance can help doctors determine the puncture target by accurately locating the foramen ovale in the skull b

Comparison of Diagnostic Performance Between Standard Susceptibility Map-Weighted Imaging and Susceptibility Map-Weighted Imaging Reconstructed From Clinical SWI and Neuromelanin MRI in Early Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Susceptibility map-weighted imaging (SMwI) provides high accuracy for early Parkinson's disease (ePD) by enhancing nigral hyperintensity. However, standard SMwI requires dedicated acquisition; reconstruction from routinely acquired sequences may offer a practical alternative. PURPOSE: To compare the diagnostic performance of standard SMwI with SWI- and neuromelanin (NM)-driven SMwI for differentiating ePD from disease controls (DC). STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. SUBJECTS: One hundred and eighty-seven drug-naïve ePD (age: 67.5 ± 9.4 years, 102 male) and 43 DC (age: 67.1 ± 9.2 years,
