The Spectrum of Repetitive Behaviors Associated With Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive behaviors refer to a broad class of responses ranging from stereotypic body movements to impulsive/compulsive behaviors. They may be associated with neurological disorders. METHODS: This is a case series of six subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) patients who presented with a wide spectrum of repetitive motor behaviors and vocalizations. RESULTS: Repetitive motor behaviors involved the upper limbs in all patients and lower limbs in 3 patients. The repetitive movements in the upper limbs were clapping, finger-clicking, hand rubbing, flailing, and dystonic posturi

Current treatment of behavioral and cognitive symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive and behavioral symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease, may occur even in the prodromal stages of the disease, worsen with disease progression, and surpass motor symptoms as the major factors affecting patient quality of life and caregiver burden. The symptoms may be caused by the disease pathology or they may represent adverse effects of treatment, or both etiological factors may contribute. Although many of these symptoms are related to dopaminergic dysfunction or dopaminergic medication, other neurotransmitters are involved as well. Behavioral symptoms including impulse control

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Preschool-Age Children.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by age-inappropriate deficits in attention or hyperactivity/impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development. It is highly correlated with other disorders, such as oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and mood symptoms. The etiology is multifactorial, and neuroimaging findings are nonspecific. Although assessment tools exist, there is variability among them, and historically, parent-teacher agreement has not been consistent. Treatment algorithm for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in

Robust Fault-Tolerant Control for Reentrant Manufacturing Systems With Periodic Faults.

This article investigates the robust fault-tolerant control problem for a class of reentrant manufacturing systems (RMSs) subject to periodic workstation faults. First, an impulsive hyperbolic partial differential equation (IHPDE) continuum model is introduced to characterize the spatiotemporal evolution of work-in-progress (WIP) in RMSs, in which the state jumps caused by workstation faults are explicitly captured. The fault-induced WIP state jumps are further classified into two cases, namely, mixed WIP state jumps and destabilizing WIP state jumps. Then, for each case, a fuzzy-model-based i

Non-suicidal Self-Injury in the Context of Psoriasis, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Acute Polysubstance Intoxication.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) during acute intoxication has been reported in association with stimulant and polysubstance use. Chronic somatic pain and trauma exposure may further increase vulnerability to impulsive self-injury. However, the intersection of inflammatory skin disease, addiction, and trauma-related pathology remains underdescribed in the clinical literature. We describe an unusual case of a hospitalized patient with psoriasis, post-traumatic stress disorder, and polysubstance use disorder who intentionally ignited psoriatic plaques during acute intoxication with cocaine, amphe

Offender characteristics in lethal violence with special reference to antisocial and autistic personality traits.

The objective of the study is to assess the relationships between personality traits, lifetime psychosocial functioning, and crime scene behavior. Thirty-five male offenders referred for forensic psychiatric assessment in Sweden (1996-2001) and assigned a main diagnosis of either antisocial personality disorder (APD) or autism spectrum disorder (AUT) were retrospectively studied. APD were subcategorized into impulsive (APDi) and controlled (APDc). Those in the AUT group were less intoxicated at the time of the crime and did not often use knives or guns compared to the APD group. Males in the A

Validation of three dimensions of childhood psychopathology in young clinic-referred boys.

Short measures of child inattention-overactivity (IO), aggression-defiance (AG), and anxiety-depression or emotionality (EM) derived through a double validation procedure are administered to mothers of 243 clinic-referred suburban New York boys between 6 and 10 years of age. Mother-rated IO is uniquely related to poor performance on cognitive and achievement tests; observed inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive behaviors in a restricted academic setting; less father education and lower family income; and most mother-reported impairments and treatment use. Mothers of high-IO boys describe the…

Gender differences in treatment-seeking Brazilian drug-dependent individuals.

The authors compared 66 women and 66 men entering an outpatient treatment for drug dependence, focussing on demographics, progression of dependence, and other associated clinical features. Most of the subjects were dependent on cocaine (75%). Women, as compared with men, had a higher level of education, were more likely to have migrated from other places to the city of Sao Paulo, to report past suicide attempts, and to have first-degree relatives with alcohol problems. There were no gender differences regarding the total time of drug use, baseline severity of dependence, and rates of concurren

Who becomes addicted and to what? psychosocial predictors of substance and behavioral addictive disorders.

A multitude of psychological and social factors likely contribute to the development and maintenance of addictive disorders. As different people develop different addictions, it is important to understand whether psychosocial factors are related differently to different types of addictive disorders. In this study, we examined the unique interaction of personality traits, family environment, and life events in predicting substance (drugs, alcohol) and behavioral (gambling, sex) addictive disorders, among 207 participants suffering from an addictive disorder and 79 controls. Results identified s

Adolescents Who Self-Harm: The Patterns in Their Interpersonal and Psychosocial Difficulties.

We proposed that having mutually hostile interactions with others is a strong environmental stress factor that, together with diverse psychosocial problems, characterizes adolescents who self-harm. Using cluster analysis, this study examined the naturally occurring patterns of hostility conditions and psychosocial difficulties in a normative sample of 2,029 adolescents (50% boys; Mage  = 13.89). Results showed that self-harming behavior was significantly higher among the subgroup of adolescents with mutually hostile interactions who exhibited both internalizing and externalizing problems than

Self-damaging and addictive behaviour in bulimia nervosa. A catchment area study.

This study examines the prevalence of self-damaging and addictive behaviour in a consecutive series of 112 normal-weight bulimic women all stemming from the same urban catchment area. A quarter reported consuming over 36 units of alcohol a week, and nine drank over 50 units. Twenty-eight per cent abused drugs, 21% repeatedly stole, 18% repeatedly overdosed, and 8% regularly cut themselves. In all, 40% reported self-damaging and addictive behaviour, 80% of whom gave a history of three or more behaviours together. Alcohol abuse was significantly associated with drug abuse and repeated overdosing

Longitudinal impact of impulsivity and sensation-seeking on vaping initiation: The moderating role of peer vaping.

Limited research indicates impulsivity and sensation-seeking are associated with electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use in young adulthood, however, no study has examined the moderating effect of peer ENDS use on these associations. We examined the impacts of impulsivity and sensation-seeking on ENDS use initiation and determined if peer ENDS use moderates these associations. Participants were 2,590 ENDS naïve (i.e., never used ENDS) young adults involved in multi-wave, 4.5-year longitudinal study (Fall, 2014 - Spring, 2019). At baseline, participants were 18-25 years old (M = 20.1; S

The link between dyslexic traits, executive functioning, impulsivity and social self-esteem among an offender and non-offender sample.

PURPOSE: The current study had two core aims; first to explore the link between dyslexic traits and other aspects of functioning among a sample of offenders and non-offenders (students); and, second, to explore if dyslexic traits were over-represented among offenders. A subsidiary aim was to explore if the results were influenced by an offender's current index offence (i.e. violent versus non-violent). METHOD: Ninety-two adult male participants took part: sixty offenders and thirty-two non-offenders. All completed a structured interview assessing dyslexic traits, namely the Dyslexia Adult Scr

Demonstration of a widely distributed atrial pacemaker complex in the human heart.

Atrial depolarization was analyzed in 14 patients with the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome undergoing surgery to ablate accessory atrioventricular pathways associated with tachyarrhythmias. Bipolar potentials were recorded simultaneously from 156 atrial epicardial electrodes arranged in three templates to fit the anterior and posterior aspects of both atria. Spontaneous or sinus rhythms were recorded, as were atrial escape rhythms after overdrive pacing at rates of 150 and 200 beats/min. Atrial activation maps revealed different patterns of impulse initiation varying from typical unifocal sinus

Cross-sectional association of Toxoplasma gondii exposure with BMI and diet in US adults.

Toxoplasmosis gondii exposure has been linked to increased impulsivity and risky behaviors, which has implications for eating behavior. Impulsivity and risk tolerance is known to be related with worse diets and a higher chance of obesity. There is little known, however, about the independent link between Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) exposure and diet-related outcomes. Using linear and quantile regression, we estimated the relationship between T. gondii exposure and BMI, total energy intake (kcal), and diet quality as measured by the Health Eating Index-2015 (HEI) among 9,853 adults from the 2

Reliable ratings or reading tea leaves: can parent, teacher, and clinician behavioral ratings of preschoolers predict ADHD at age six?

To assess the relative ability of parent, teacher, and clinician behavioral ratings of preschoolers to predict ADHD severity and diagnosis at 6 years of age. Hyperactive/inattentive preschoolers [N = 104, 75 % boys, Mean (SD) age = 4.37 (0.47) years] were followed over 2 years (mean = 26.44 months, SD = 5.66). At baseline (BL), parents and teachers completed the ADHD-RS-IV and clinicians completed the Behavioral Rating Inventory for Children following a psychological testing session. At age 6, [Mean (SD) age = 6.62 (0.35) years], parents were interviewed with the K-SADS-PL; teachers completed

Testing an etiological model for male juvenile sexual offending against females.

Research on the origin of sexual aggression has identified several important contributing factors: (a) early abuse (physical and sexual), (b) personality/behavioral traits (callousness and unemotionality, antisocial behavior/impulsivity, and hypersexuality), and (c) attitudinal/cognitive variables (negative masculinity, hostility toward women, misogynistic fantasies). We developed and tested an etiological model of sexual coercion on adult samples of sexual offenders and community controls. The model proposes three major causal pathways to sexual coercion. Using data gathered from a computeriz
