Exploring the Role of Guilt in Eating Disorders: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Eating disorders (EDs) are complex psychopathological conditions involving dysfunctional eating behaviors, excessive body image concerns, and impaired emotional regulation. Among moral emotions, guilt plays a significant role in ED dynamics, influencing both symptomatology and interpersonal relationships. This study examines specific guilt subtypes (normative and altruistic guilt) using a specific psychometric tool. METHODS: Forty-three adults with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or binge eating disorder (BED) were recruited from the Eating Disorder Center …

From Childhood Interpersonal Trauma to Binge Eating in Adults: Unraveling the Role of Personality and Maladaptive Regulation.

Background/Objectives: Binge eating (BE) is associated with physical and psychological consequences, such as obesity and reduced quality of life. The relationship between binge eating and childhood experiences of interpersonal trauma has been explored, yet few studies focus on the processes that may explain this association. In this regard, some personality traits and maladaptive cognitive-emotional regulation may help explain this relationship, as they have been associated, respectively, with BE and childhood interpersonal trauma. The purpose of this study is to explore the complex processes

The Association between Potentially Traumatic Events and Cocaine, Cannabis, and Alcohol Use Differs by Race.

These types of traumas may also be viewed as an extension of discrimination and exclusion, two longstanding, intractable issues for people of color in the US, making them even more damaging. Development and Preliminary Validation of the Mentalizing Vignettes Task: A Measure of Mentalizing Across Relational Contexts.

Mentalizing is a potentially transdiagnostic construct with important implications for the emotional and interpersonal functioning of individuals with mental health vulnerabilities. The multidimensional and dynamic qualities of mentalizing warrant clinically and contextually relevant assessment grounded in diverse interpersonal situations. We developed the Mentalizing Vignettes Task (MVT), a vignette-based, multiple-choice measure of mentalizing across various relationship domains (e.g., friendship, family, romantic). Study 1 focused on the development, content validation, and item analysis of

Exploring the interrelationship between myopia, psychological resilience, and emotion regulation in adolescents using a network analysis.

Psychological resilience and emotion regulation play essential roles in helping adolescents manage myopia-related psychological stress. However, existing research has focused predominantly on isolated associations among myopia and single psychological variables, neglecting the interactive networks among intrinsic dimensions of psychological resilience and emotion regulation strategies and potential gender-specific structural variations within these networks. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1008 seventh-grade students in Shenzhen, China. Noncycloplegic autorefraction was used to assess

Predictors of Individual and Interpersonal Adjustment Among Non-offending Partners of Individuals With Histories of Sexual Offenses.

Recent research indicates that the consequences of sexual offenses extend beyond target victims, including to non-offending partners of individuals with sexual offense histories. However, little research has focused on non-offending partners' wellbeing and relationships with persons with sexual offense histories leading up to and following acts of sexual aggression. Non-offending partners may be secondary victims of their partners' offenses in managing psychological difficulties (e.g., guilt, shame), social stigma and isolation, fear for their safety, or difficulties in their romantic relation

Refining the link between psychopathy, antisocial behavior, and empathy: A meta-analytical approach across different conceptual frameworks.

The current meta-analysis includes 477 records (N = 142,692) and comprehensively explores the complex interplay between psychopathy, antisocial behavior, and empathy. First, empathy domains (cognitive and affective) were used to dissociate antisocial behavior from psychopathy. Cognitive empathy was more impaired in antisocial groups (gcognitive = -0.43; gaffective = -0.11), while samples scoring higher in psychopathy displayed larger deficits in affective empathy (gaffective = -0.40; gcognitive = -0.22). Secondly, the specific associations between empathy domains and psychopathy dimensions wer

Typology of eating episodes in children and adolescents with overweight/obesity.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that youth with overweight/obesity can be subtyped according to disinhibited eating tendencies. No research has attempted to subtype classes of eating episodes along sensational, psychological, and hedonic dimensions. METHODS: Youth (N = 39; 55% female) aged 8-14 y with overweight/obesity completed a 2-week ecological momentary assessment protocol in which they reported on all eating episodes and their sensational, environmental, affective, and interpersonal contexts. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to classify episodes based on loss of control (LOC) while

Biased distance estimation in social anxiety disorder: A new avenue for understanding avoidance behavior.

OBJECTIVES: People regulate their interpersonal space appropriately to obtain a comfortable distance for interacting with others. Socially anxious individuals are especially prone to discomfort from and fear of physical closeness, leading them to prefer a greater interpersonal distance from others. Previous studies also indicate that fear can enhance the threat-related elements of a threatening stimulus. For example, spider phobia is associated with estimating spiders as bigger and faster than they actually are. Nonetheless, it is still unclear whether the preference of those with social anxie

The neural dynamics underlying the interpersonal effects of emotional expression on decision making.

Although numerous studies explore the effects of emotion on decision-making, the existing research has mainly focused on the influence of intrapersonal emotions, leaving the influence of one person's emotions on another's decisions underestimated. To specify how interpersonal emotions shape decision-making and delineate the underlying neural dynamics involved, the present study examined brain responses to utilitarian feedback combined with angry or happy faces in competitive and cooperative contexts. Behavioral results showed that participants responded slower following losses than wins when c

Ethnic identity and perceived stress in HIV+ minority women: the role of coping self-efficacy and social support.

BACKGROUND: Ethnic minority women living with HIV (WLWH) face multiple stigmas that can contribute to overwhelming levels of stress, which could hamper their ability to manage their chronic disease. Little is known about whether having a greater sense of ethnic identity might insulate WLWH from stress. It is also possible that certain cognitive and interpersonal factors (i.e., coping self-efficacy and perceived social support) may act as mediators of this relationship. We hypothesized that WLWH with a greater sense of ethnic identity would report less stress because they access these cognitive

Effects of pre- and post-Katrina nonviolent and violent experiences on male veterans' psychological functioning.

BACKGROUND: Identifying individuals at risk for mental health problems after a disaster often involves assessing potentially traumatic exposures inherent to the disaster. Survivors of disasters also may have been exposed, both before and during the event, to trauma not directly related to the disaster. A substantial literature suggests exposure to interpersonal violence may have more severe negative outcomes than exposure to non-violent events; however, it is unclear whether violent vs nonviolent exposures before and during a disaster have differential effects on postdisaster psychological fun

Socioeconomic status, psychosocial processes, and perceived health: an interpersonal perspective.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial variables, including stress, emotions, and social factors, may contribute to the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and health. Concepts and methods from interpersonal theory (1) could provide a useful framework for research concerning the roles of psychosocial factors in socioeconomic health disparities. PURPOSE: We examined the association between SES and psychosocial processes captured by the interpersonal circumplex and tested the degree to which circumplex ratings explained the association between SES and perceived health. METHODS: San Diego communit

Interpersonal variability in dependent personality.

The interpersonal circumplex (IPC) was recommended as a personality trait dimensional model with good potential to identify the phenomenological scope of personality disorders whose core dysfunction involves maladaptive expression of interpersonal traits. The IPC was then applied to the reconceptualization of dependent personality and dependent personality disorder. In Study 1, Pincus and Gurtman's (1995) three interpersonal vectors of dependency were validated via factor analyses conducted on two large samples (N = 921; N = 472) and a reliable self-report measure, the 3 Vector Dependency Inve

Psychopathological and interpersonal factors associated with suicide attempts in Mexican clinical patients with and without a history of child sexual abuse.

Suicidal behavior in the Mexican population is understudied, and there is a paucity of research exploring the role of psychological factors and of the interpersonal theory of suicide in this population. The objectives of this work were: to explore the associations between interpersonal and psychopathological variables and suicide attempts. We also explored psychopathological differences in suicidal behavior between patients with a history of child sexual abuse and those without and examined the most accurate predictors of suicide attempts in the study sample. Finally, we tested the mediation b

The Anxiety Factor: Moral Traditionalism, Interpersonal Contact Diversity and Support for Transgender Candidates and Rights.

Given the prejudice against transgender people and the setbacks faced by transgender political candidates, an online survey was conducted (among a convenience sample of American adults recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk) to investigate what influence public support for transgender candidates and rights and how to increase such support. The study found that moral traditionalism was negatively associated with support for transgender candidates and rights. The diversity of interpersonal contact with transgender individuals not only was positively related to the support but undermined the ne

Hallucinations in the months after a trauma: An investigation of the role of cognitive processing of a physical assault in the occurrence of hallucinatory experiences.

The role that cognitive processing of a recent trauma has in the occurrence of hallucinations has not been examined longitudinally. This study investigated trauma-related cognitive predictors of hallucinations in the months following an interpersonal assault. Four weeks after treatment at an emergency department for interpersonal assault injuries, 106 participants were assessed for peri-traumatic cognitive processing, cognitive responses to trauma memories, negative beliefs about the self, Posttraumatic-stress disorder (PTSD), and hallucinatory experiences. Hallucinatory experiences were reass

[The effect of writing about the perceived benefits of interpersonal transgressions on psychological well-being in Japanese college students].

This study examined the effect of writing about the perceived benefits (WPB) of an interpersonal transgression on subjective well-being and feelings of hostility. Participants (N = 74) who reported experiencing a highly stressful interpersonal trouble within the past year were randomly assigned to one of four conditions that consisted of 20-minute writing tasks conducted over a three-day period in which they wrote about either (a) the perceived benefits resulting from the trouble, (b) the features of the trouble, (c) the features in the first 10 minutes and the perceived benefits of the troubl

Treatment manual for trauma-exposed youth: case studies.

Witnessing community violence and experiencing abuse in the home are two examples of interpersonal trauma that can have a devastating impact on children and adolescents. Recent research on the treatment of children exposed to interpersonal violence has focused on cognitive-behavioral interventions, often delivered in school settings. We describe the application of a new manual-based psychotherapy protocol for treating pediatric trauma in a middle school. Two case studies illustrate the protocol application to children from an inner-city neighborhood. The Stanford Cue-Centered Therapy (CCT) is
