Monochromatic excimer light 308 nm in monotherapy and combined with topical khellin 4% in the treatment of vitiligo: a controlled study.

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disorder affecting 1-4% of the world's population. Conventional therapies include steroids, photosensitive topical agents, surgical treatments, and phototherapy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of monochromatic excimer light 308 nm (MEL), both as a monotherapy and in combination with khellin 4% ointment in vitiligo. Forty-height patients (36 male and 12 female) affected with vitiligo were enrolled in this open prospective study. Patients were selected and divided into three groups: group I included 16 patients treated with MEL 308 nm onc

Comparison of standard and aberration-neutral profiles for myopic LASIK with the SCHWIND ESIRIS platform.

PURPOSE: To compare the induced corneal wavefront aberration of eyes treated for myopia by LASIK with the SCHWIND ESIRIS laser using an aspheric aberration-neutral (Aberration-Free) ablation profile versus a classical Munnerlyn standard profile. METHODS: Two consecutive groups of myopic eyes were analyzed. One group (70 eyes) was treated with a standard non-aspheric Munnerlyn profile (standard group, mean spherical equivalent refraction -4.09 +/- 1.77 diopters [D] [range: -7.75 to -0.75 D] and mean cylinder 0.78 +/- 0.76 D [range: 0.00 to 3.00 D]), and the second group (70 eyes) was treated w

Wavefront-guided surface ablation with prophylactic use of mitomycin C after a buttonhole laser in situ keratomileusis flap.

PURPOSE: To describe the surgical outcome of a patient who had a previous buttonhole after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and 3 months later, had wavefront-guided photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with topical mitomycin C 0.02%. METHODS: A 38-year-old man underwent bilateral LASIK for correction of myopic astigmatism. A buttonhole in his right eye LASIK flap occurred, but the surgeon decided to proceed with ablation due to the small size of the buttonhole. After LASIK, the patient complained of monocular diplopia in his right eye with 20/30 best spectacle-corrected visual acuity. Wavefr

Severe bilateral paralimbal sterile infiltrates after photorefractive keratectomy.

This study presents a case report of the clinical presentation and management of a 47-year-old male myope who underwent photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and developed bilateral sterile corneal infiltrates at 1 day post-operatively. The patient was successfully treated with aggressive topical antibiotic and topical steroid therapy. The final corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was 20/25 with faint corneal scarring. Peripheral sterile corneal infiltrate can occur after PRK with excellent prognosis. Infectious causes should be suspected in all cases of corneal infiltrate. The most likely cau

PURPOSE: To analyze the anterior corneal topography changes after 8 years after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. METHODS: Sixty-six eyes (33 patients) underwent PRK using an excimer laser platform. The preoperative and 1-, 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-year postoperative average corneal maps were computed for each

Visual and refractive results of combined PTK/PRK in patients with corneal surface disease and refractive errors.

PURPOSE: To investigate the changes in symptoms, refraction, and visual acuity (VA) in patients with corneal surface disease and refractive errors who had phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) combined with photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). SETTING: University-based referral practice. METHODS: Patients with myopia or astigmatism and map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy or recurrent erosions were treated. Reduction of hyperopia and astigmatism after superficial keratectomy of peripheral hypertrophic subepithelial corneal degeneration.

PURPOSE: To report the development of progressive hyperopia and astigmatism resulting from peripheral hypertrophic subepithelial degeneration which was treated with superficial keratectomy of the lesion. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A patient with peripheral hypertrophic subepithelial degeneration of both corneas was followed up for a 6-year period. During this time, the patient experienced a slowly progressive increase in hyperopia and astigmatism in both eyes. In the left eye, extension of the degeneration paracentrally resulted in significant hyperopia and astigmatism and a best spectac

[Iron deposits in cornea in confocal microscope].

PURPOSE: The study aimed to evaluate the iron deposits in corneas in confocal microscope. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The material comprised 16 eyes which underwent photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) procedure. The structure of corneas was evaluated between 3-10 years after PRK. The visual acuity after PRK was the same as the best corrected visual acuity before the procedure. The structure of corneas was evaluated in vivo using scanning slit confocal microscopy. The confocal images of corneas in patients after PRK were compared with confocal corneal images of patients with corneal scars (2 eyes), ke

Corneal iron ring after hyperopic photorefractive keratectomy.

PURPOSE: To report the incidence and course of corneal iron deposition after hyperopic photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). SETTING: Gazi University, Medical School, Department of Ophthalmology, Ankara, Turkey. METHODS: Between January 1995 and December 1997, 62 eyes had PRK to correct hyperopia. RESULTS: Nine eyes developed corneal iron ring 5 to 8 months (mean 6.25 months +/- 1.3 [SD]) after PRK for hyperopia. The rings persisted during the mean follow-up of 19 +/- 11.09 months. CONCLUSION: The ring-shaped iron deposition after PRK for hyperopia must be differentiated from the Fleischer ri

Corneal scarring and irregular astigmatism following refractive surgery in a corneal transplant.

BACKGROUND: Scarring may follow refractive surgery, causing irregular astigmatism and loss of visual acuity. METHODS: A case report of scarring and irregular astigmatism occurring in a corneal transplant following photorefractive keratectomy and arcuate incisions is presented. RESULTS: Following surgical excision of the scar, unaided visual acuity improved from 1/60 to 6/12. Histopathology of the excised scar was obtained. CONCLUSIONS: Refractive surgery following corneal transplantation may produce scarring. The origin of the scar in the present case has not been established.

Keratoconus detected by videokeratography in candidates for photorefractive keratectomy.

BACKGROUND: Patients with corneal shape abnormalities should be identified prior to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). We used videokeratography screening to detect subclinical corneal abnormalities, including keratoconus, which might have been missed by conventional clinical evaluation. METHODS: One hundred forty-six apparently normal myopic eyes (-1.00 to -7.00 diopters [D] with less than 1.50 D of cylinder) of 91 consecutive patients who were candidates for PRK were screened by videokeratography. RESULTS: In 6 of 91 patients (7 of 146 eyes), unsuspected corneal shape abnormalities were de

Induced Ocular Higher-Order Aberrations After Photorefractive Keratectomy versus Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis for Myopia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

TOPIC: Do PRK and LASIK differ in induced ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in myopic adults, and does this vary by ablation profile or excimer laser platform? CLINICAL RELEVANCE: PRK and LASIK are among the most widely performed refractive procedures worldwide, and both remain standard-of-care options for myopic correction. Despite comparable refractive outcomes, patients frequently report glare, halos, and reduced contrast sensitivity, symptoms linked to induced ocular HOAs. Whether PRK or LASIK confers an optical advantage at the whole-eye level remains unresolved, with prior synthese
