Oro-facial tumours and tumour-like lesions in Greek children and adolescents: an 11-year retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the epidemiology, histological diagnosis and treatment outcome of oro-facial tumours and tumour-like lesions in Greek children and adolescents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The medical records of patients with oro-facial lesions who presented at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at "A. & P. Kyriakou" Children's Hospital from 2000 to 2010 were reviewed. Data was analyzed in relation to age, gender, location, histology, treatment choice and outcome. RESULTS: Two hundred and eleven oro-facial lesions were identified. Age ranged from 14 days to 15 years (mean 8 ye

Posterolateral cervical vein as a recipient vein in reconstructive microvascular surgery of the head and neck.

Free flaps are becoming the preferred method of choice for head and neck reconstruction. However, many patients who have undergone radiotherapy and radical neck dissection or who require treatment for recurrent tumor, often present difficulty in choosing recipient vessels. The authors have noted a potential recipient vein coursing vertically along the anterior ridge of the trapezius muscle. They used this vein as the recipient vein in two patients; the two free flaps were transferred successfully without complications. This vein, which they provisionally named the posterolateral cervical vein

[Neoplasms of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Diagnosis, differential diagnosis and intervention].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of diagnostic and interventional radiological techniques for neoplastic lesions of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Modern diagnosis of the TMJ is based on the clinical use of conventional X-ray techniques, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and interventional techniques like biopsies, vascular occlusion and ablation. RESULTS: Conventional X-ray still forms the basic diagnostic procedure applied in open and closed mouth position. CT improves the diagnostic information and serves as the standard diagnostica

The current status of mandibular reconstruction using autogenous frozen mandibular grafts.

A review of recent developments in experimental canine surgery using autogenous frozen grafts for mandibular reconstruction has elicited enthusiasm for their human application in cancer surgery. They do reossify, even under adverse conditions of perioperative irradiation, to regenerate a mandibular graft in the dog. Our experience with six patients who underwent immediate autogenous mandibular graft reconstruction is dismal. All failed because of intraoral complications; none evidenced recurrence of tumor in bone. A delayed procedure, in which revascularization of the midportion of the bone gr

Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis and Metastasis Within the Same Site of the Jaw.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a well known complication in patients treated with bisphosphonates (BPs) for skeletal metastasis and multiple myeloma (MM). Few oncologic patients under treatment with BPs and with ONJ and metastasis or MM at the same site of the jaw have been described. We report here on a 54-year old white female who was treated with intra-venous zoledronic acid for skeletal metastasis of breast cancer who developed ONJ. Because of a fracture at the site of ONJ, resection of the affected segment was performed. Although metastasis was not suspected by pre-operative image anal

Case report: Upper arm metastasis of an oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) frequently metastasizes lymphogenously. Haematogenous dissemination is less common. This report describes a rare case of a metastatic OSCC of the floor of the mouth to the patients' left upper arm. To our knowledge this is the first of such case described in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Twelve months after R0 tumor resection surgery, including microvascular reconstruction of the lower jaw followed by adjuvant radiotherapy, the patient was admitted for osteosynthesis plates removal. During clinical examination a tumor located at his lef

Humeral brown tumor as first presentation of primary hyperparathyroidism caused by ectopic parathyroid adenomas: report of two cases and review of literature.

Two cases of brown tumor of the humerus caused by ectopic parathyroid adenomas were presented, which to our knowledge has not been previously documented in the international literature. There are two highlights in these two cases. First, brown tumors of the long bones may commonly involve femur and tibia, rarely involve humerus in association with primary hyperparathyroidism. Second, ectopic parathyroid adenomas of our patient had an unusual location of this disorder. We explored the role of ultrasound, MIBI scintigraphy as well as FNAB (fine needle aspiration biopsy) in diagnosis of brown tum

Repair of skin covering osteoradionecrosis of the mandible with the fasciocutaneous supraclavicular artery island flap: case report.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoradionecrosis of the mandible is a serious complication following radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Reconstructive procedures in the head and neck region use a wide range of flaps for defect closure. The methods range from local, mostly myocutaneous flaps and skin grafts to free microsurgical flaps to ensure a satisfactory functional and aesthetic result. Moreover, the donor site defect needs to be closed, with as little as possible functional or aesthetic impairment. PATIENT AND METHOD: A 60-year-old male is presented with a history of squamous cell carcinoma of the l

Two stage reconstruction with revascularized grafts after resection of retromolar and oropharyngeal carcinoma.

The clinical outcome of two stage reconstruction with revascularized grafts after resection of extensive retromolar and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in 17 patients is presented. In the first operation, the intraoral soft tissue defect was covered by a revascularized jejunal flap, and the mandibular defect was bridged by a reconstruction plate. After a period of 5-28 months, mandibular reconstruction was performed with a microsurgically revascularized iliac crest graft that was positioned under the jejunal graft. Clinical follow up included tumour recurrence rate, the form of nutrition

[Quiz on an unusual orbital masquerade syndrome].

BACKGROUND: After consulting the here presented CT-images of the orbit, the question was raised whether the ocular bulbus was really enucleated or the anamnesis was wrong and a lymphoma existed in the orbit. We will therefore discuss a case of a special follow-up after an enucleation with implantation of a "Bangerter Plomb". CASE REPORT: In 1988 the patient, born on February 1, 1947, underwent an enucleation of the right eye with implantation of a "Bangerter Plomb" because of posttraumatic phthisis dolorosa. The postoperative follow up was complicated by a reactive psychopathological developm

Thoracodorsal artery perforator - scapular flap in oromandibular reconstruction with associated large facial skin defects.

The reconstruction of oromandibular defects associated with extensive loss of external skin is surgically challenging. We describe 2 cases where such defects were reconstructed with a chimeric thoracodorsal artery perforator and scapular (TDAP-Scap) free flap based on the subscapular system. The flap is a reliable option in the reconstruction of through-and-through oromandibular defects.

Spontaneous bone healing of the large bone defects in the mandible.

Spontaneous healing of large bone defects in the mandibles of 33 patients was studied. Standard postoperative clinical and radiographic examinations were performed immediately after surgery and after 2, 6 and 12 months. They were analysed using a novel relative bone densitometry method and indexes of relative bone healing were established. Spontaneous bone regeneration occurred in all patients clinically, and the computer analysis of radiographs showed that the mean final bone density in the bone defects was 88% of the bone density of the surrounding healthy bone. In the cases of smaller defec
