A Multifunctional Nanodrug Increases the Therapeutic Sensitivity of Lenvatinib to Hepatocellular Carcinoma by Inhibiting the Stemness of Hepatic Cancer Stem Cells.

Drug resistance resulting from diverse mechanisms including the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) is the main obstacle for improving therapeutic efficacy of lenvatinib in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Herein, a nanomedicine (siCD24-Len-MnO@PLAP) is developed by incorporating manganese oxide (MnO), lenvatinib (Len), and siRNA against CD24 (siCD24) into micelles composed of methoxypolyethylene glycol (mPEG), poly-L-lysine (PLLys), and polyasparagyl(N-(2-Aminoethyl)piperidine) (PAsp(PIP)) triblock copolymer. The nanomedicine can respond to the tumor microenvironment (TME) to release lenvatin

Comparative analysis of the antimicrobial activity and dye degradation of metal oxides (TiO2, CdO, Mn2O3, and ZnO) nanoparticles using a green approach.

A tremendous amount of recent work has been done on different metal oxide nanomaterials for biological activities and photocatalytic dye degradation. This work used the Cissus quadrangularis leaf extract to prepare TiO2, CdO, Mn2O3, and ZnO nanoparticles using a green synthesis approach. To ascertain the physicochemical characteristics of the generated metal oxide nanoparticles, various characterisation techniques were used. The X-ray diffraction technique was used to determine the composition of the crystal and phase. Metal oxide nanoparticles have been proven to be present through surface mo

Organic Carbon Sequestration by Secondary Fe-Mn Complex Minerals via the Anoxic Redox Reaction of Fe(II) and Birnessite.

Organic matter (OM) sequestrated by iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) complex minerals may be an effective way to achieve organic carbon (OC) persistence in sediments and soils. However, the impact of Fe-Mn complex minerals from a redox reaction of Fe(II) and birnessite on OC dynamics remains unexplored. Herein, the immobilization and molecular transformation of fulvic acid (FA), mediated by a redox reaction of Fe(II) and birnessite, were investigated at pH 4.0-8.0 with 1-5 mM Fe(II). Higher pH and Fe(II) addition promoted Fe(II) oxidation coupled with the reductive transformation of birnessite. Th

Mass spectrometry analysis of PM2.5 in poultry farms and the cytotoxicity and metabolism perturbation of BEAS-2B cells.

To evaluate the potential risks posed by farm-derived fine particulate matter (PM2.5), we conducted a comprehensive analysis of PM2.5 samples collected from chicken farms. Specifically, water-soluble ions, metal and metalloids, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were quantitatively determined via ion chromatography, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and gas chromatography‒mass spectrometry (GC‒MS), respectively. Furthermore, the microbial composition was elucidated through 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) high-throughput sequencing and ribosomal DNA (rDNA)-internal transcribed

Food preference and nutrient composition in captive bonobos (Pan paniscus).

Food preference has been studied in a range of Hominoidea in the wild and in captivity, allowing for interspecific comparisons. Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) prefer low-fibre, high-sugar foods, suggesting that frugivory and their dietary overlap are a result of their shared preference for the same nutrients. Comparable tests of the nutritional preference of bonobos do not exist. In this study we examined food preferences of five captive bonobos for 23 familiar and ten novel food items. We performed paired-choice food tests, resulting in a clear rank order

The effect of temperature on sulfate release from Pearl River sediments in South China.

Sulfate (SO42-) has received attention as means of monitoring water quality and pollution. However, the SO42- content of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs varies significantly by season, so environmental factors such as temperature can affect it. An experiment was conducted with a series of aerobic and anaerobic tanks containing Pearl River sediments and distilled water to assess the release of SO42- from sediments under controlled conditions. "Black-odor river" refers to near anoxic conditions in the water column and foul odors emanating from affected rivers in southeastern China. These river sys

Fine-Scale Source Apportionment Including Diesel-Related Elemental and Organic Constituents of PM2.5 across Downtown Pittsburgh.

Health effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) may vary by composition, and the characterization of constituents may help to identify key PM2.5 sources, such as diesel, distributed across an urban area. The composition of diesel particulate matter (DPM) is complicated, and elemental and organic carbon are often used as surrogates. Examining multiple elemental and organic constituents across urban sites, however, may better capture variation in diesel-related impacts, and help to more clearly separate diesel from other sources. We designed a "super-saturation" monitoring campaign of 36 sites

Impact of short-term climate variation and hydrology change on thermal structure and water quality of a canyon-shaped, stratified reservoir.

Climate variation can have obvious effects on hydrologic conditions, which in turn can have direct consequences for the thermal regime and quality of water for human use. In this research, weekly surveys were conducted from 2011 to 2013 to investigate how changes of climate and hydrology affect the thermal regime and water quality at the Heihe Reservoir. Our results show that the hydrology change during the flooding season can both increase the oxygen concentration and accelerate the consumption of dissolved oxygen. Continuous heavy rainfall events occurred in September 2011 caused the mixing

Transcriptional regulation by Ferric Uptake Regulator (Fur) in pathogenic bacteria.

In the ancient anaerobic environment, ferrous iron (Fe(2+)) was one of the first metal cofactors. Oxygenation of the ancient world challenged bacteria to acquire the insoluble ferric iron (Fe(3+)) and later to defend against reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the Fenton chemistry. To acquire Fe(3+), bacteria produce low-molecular weight compounds, known as siderophores, which have extremely high affinity for Fe(3+). However, during infection the host restricts iron from pathogens by producing iron- and siderophore-chelating proteins, by exporting iron from intracellular pathogen-contai

Regulation of ionizing radiation-induced apoptosis by a manganese porphyrin complex.

Ionizing radiation induces the production of reactive oxygen species, which play an important causative role in apoptotic cell death. Therefore, compounds that scavenge reactive oxygen species may confer regulatory effects on apoptosis. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetics have been shown to be protective against cell injury caused by reactive oxygen species. We investigated the effects of the manganese (III) tetrakis(N-methyl-2-pyridyl)porphyrin (MnTMPyP), a cell-permeable SOD mimetic, on ionizing radiation-induced apoptosis. Upon exposure to 2 Gy of gamma-irradiation, there was a distinct dif

A manganese porphyrin complex is a novel radiation protector.

Exposure of cells to ionizing radiation leads to formation of reactive oxygen species, which are associated with radiation-induced cytotoxicity. Therefore, compounds that scavenge reactive oxygen species may confer radioprotective effects. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of manganese(III) tetrakis(N-methyl-2-pyridyl)porphyrin (MnTMPyP), a cell-permeable SOD mimetic, on radiation-dependent toxicity. We investigated the protective role of MnTMPyP

Biochemical markers of neurotoxicity. A review of mechanistic studies and applications.

Neurotoxicology presents major challenges to the development of biological markers in accordance to conventional research strategies. Because of the inaccessibility of the nervous system, one of the proposed alternatives is the study of biochemical signals in peripheral tissues which can easily and ethically be obtained in humans, and which could represent surrogate indicators of equivalent parameters in the nervous tissue. Considerable scientific support to this approach is provided by the results of recent investigations in major areas of pharmacology and psychobiology. Studies examining par

Role of Caenorhabditis elegans AKT-1/2 and SGK-1 in Manganese Toxicity.

Excessive levels of the essential metal manganese (Mn) may cause a syndrome similar to Parkinson's disease. The model organism Caenorhabditis elegans mimics some of Mn effects in mammals, including dopaminergic neurodegeneration, oxidative stress, and increased levels of AKT. The evolutionarily conserved insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling pathway (IIS) modulates worm longevity, metabolism, and antioxidant responses by antagonizing the transcription factors DAF-16/FOXO and SKN-1/Nrf-2. AKT-1, AKT-2, and SGK-1 act upstream of these transcription factors. To study the role of these pr

Association of placental manganese levels, maternal gut microbiota, and preeclampsia: a tripartite perspective.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE), a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity, remains poorly understood mechanistically. While metal elements like manganese (Mn) are critical for placental function, their interplay with gut microbiota in PE pathogenesis is underexplored. This study evaluates placental heavy metal exposure-particularly Mn-and its interaction with gut microbiota in modulating PE risk. METHODS: The study included 21 healthy pregnant women (Control group), and 21 pregnant women diagnosed with PE (PE group). Placental samples were collected to measure metal elements concentratio
