Lemierre's syndrome, also known as postanginal sepsis, is a rare condition that presents as an increasing sore throat due to acute pharyngitis or tonsillitis and progresses to sepsis, due to suppurative thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. We present an atypical case of Lemierre's syndrome complicated by carotid thrombosis. The etiological factors and the diagnostic and therapeutic measures are discussed.

When human observers are presented with a double target display, a saccadic eye movement is triggered to an intermediate position close to the 'centre-of-gravity' of the configuration. This study examined the saccadic eye movements of dyslexic and normal readers in response to displays of single and double targets. Eye movement analyses revealed no differences in the spatial position of saccadic eye movements of dyslexic and normal readers in response to single targets presented at 5 degrees or 10 degrees. However, when presented with two targets simultaneously at 5 degrees AND 10 degrees, in

PURPOSE: To report a case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the orbit.
METHODS: A 71-year-old patient presented with diplopia eyelid fullness and limitation of ocular motility in the left eye. Visual acuity was counting fingers, intraocular pressure 34 mmHg and fundus eye examination showed choroidal folds in the involved eye.
RESULTS: CT scan showed a mass filling the superior and external left orbit without bone destruction. A biopsy was performed revealing that the tumour was composed of plasmacytoid cells positive with immunohistochemical stains for Kappa light chains and epithelial memb

BACKGROUND: The constellations of findings often referred to as Mobius syndrome might be better described as Mobius sequence, because the term sequence defines a cascade of secondary events after an embryonic insult from heterogeneous causes. Classic clinical findings include evidence of sixth and seventh cranial nerve involvement, often with associated malformations of limbs, craniofacial structures, and other cranial nerves.
METHODS: A prospective study was undertaken in Sweden of 25 patients who showed characteristic findings of Mobius sequence.
RESULTS: Of the patients who did not have s

A large group of subjects, either average readers or reading/spelling disabled subjects (n = 185; age between 8-25 years; M = 13 +/- 4 years), were tested in various standardized cognitive tasks including reading/spelling assessment and in non-cognitive saccadic eye movement tasks. Dyslexics were separated into a subgroup (D1) with deficits in the serial auditory short-term memory and a subgroup (D2) with an isolated low achievement in reading/writing. Control subjects had no relevant cognitive deficit of any type. Saccadic eye movements were measured in a single target and in a sequential-tar

We studied prospectively 105 unselected patients complaining of ptosis and/or diplopia due to extrinsic ophthalmic muscle palsies without other neurological signs. All patients underwent the same diagnostic protocol. The presenting symptoms were: ptosis, 35 patients (33%); diplopia, 27 patients (26%); ptosis and diplopia, 43 patients (41%). The oculomotor nerve was most frequently involved, followed by the abducens nerve. The final diagnoses were: ocular myasthenia, intracranial and/or orbital pathology, thyroid ophthalmopathy, diabetic ophthalmoplegia, mitochondrial myopathy, oculopharyngeal

PURPOSE: Childhood epilepsy with occipital paroxysms (CEOP) is characterised by ictal visual hallucinations and occipital epileptiform activity on interictal EEG. A variant has been described with nonvisual symptoms including tonic head and eye deviation, vomiting, and episodes of partial status epilepticus. We fully documented the electroclinical features of such patients to determine whether classification separate from CEOP is justified.
METHODS: This was a multicentre study with participating investigators submitting details of patients with idiopathic occipital seizures characterised by

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To assess the long-term ophthalmological outcome of Parinaud syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The files of 6 children with tumor-related Parinaud syndrome diagnosed and observed from 2000 to 2007 were reviewed. All had papilledema indicating increased intracranial pressure.
RESULTS: Mean presentation-to-diagnosis delay was 3.6 weeks. Treatment consisted of surgical shunting and complete or partial resection with adjuvant chemotherapy (n = 4) and radiation (n = 3). Visual acuity remained stable or improved in 8 of 9 eyes with 20/30 visual acuity at diagnosis; improved

Adults (≥55 years) with self-reported cognitive complaints (sCC) were randomized to: multiple-modality exercise (M2), or multiple-modality plus mind-motor exercise (M4), for 24-weeks. Participants (n = 58) were assessed on antisaccade reaction time (RT) to examine executive-related oculomotor control and self-reported physical activity (PA) at pre-intervention (V0), post-intervention (V1), and 52-weeks follow-up (V2). We previously reported significant improvements in antisaccade RT of 23 ms at V1, in both groups. We now report maintenance of antisaccade RT improvement from V1 to V2, t(57) = 0

AIM: The alpha-1 isoform of the calcium channel gene is expressed abundantly in neuronal tissue, especially within the cerebellum. Mutations in this gene may manifest with hemiplegic migraine, spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6) and episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2) in adults. There are reports of children with CACAN1A mutations presenting with paroxysmal tonic upgaze, abnormal saccades and congenital nystagmus as well as severe forms of hemiplegic migraine. The aim of this study was to review the clinical presentation and subsequent course of all children with a CACNA1A mutation who presented to

OBJECTIVE: To identify two forms of hemispatial neglect, attentional and intentional, in healthy volunteers using frontal and parietal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS).
METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers performed line bisection tasks while viewing stimuli on closed circuit TV. Direct view of the exploring hand and the target was precluded and the TV monitor guided performance. In the normal condition, the direction of hand movement on the table (workspace) was congruent with that on the monitor, and in the reversed condition, the lateral movement in the workspace occurred in

Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome is an uncommon manifestation of Bartonella henselae infection presenting with granulomatous conjunctivitis, marked preauricular lymphadenopathy, and occasional necrotizing lesions. The most common cause of Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome is due to direct contact with contaminated cat saliva or scratches near the eye. While Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome has been linked to cat scratch disease, it has not been associated with necrotizing soft tissue infections due to a distinct bacterial process, such as necrotizing fasciitis due to Group A Streptococcus

The caudal primate prefrontal cortex (PFC) is involved in target selection and visually guided saccades through both covert attention and overt orienting eye movements. Unilateral damage to the caudal PFC often leads to decreased awareness of a contralesional target alone, referred to as "neglect," or when it is presented simultaneously with an ipsilesional target, referred to as "extinction." In the current study, we examined whether deficits in contralesional target selection were due to contralesional oculomotor deficits, such as slower reaction times. We experimentally induced a focal isch

PURPOSE: To investigate normative subjective cyclotorsion values and cyclofusion ranges in a healthy adult population.
METHODS: A cross-sectional investigation was performed in 120 healthy, non-strabismic adults, 60 men and 60 women in the age range of 18-69 years. All subjects were assessed for cyclotorsion using the synoptophore and the single Maddox rod (SMR) methods. Cyclofusion was investigated with the synoptophore in 60 of the subjects.
RESULTS: All age groups showed low values of subjective torsion, mainly excyclotorsion with mean values of -1 degree for both methods. Reference range

Christianson Syndrome is a rare but increasingly diagnosed X-linked intellectual disability disorder that arises from mutations in SLC9A6/NHE6, a pH-regulating transporter that localizes to early and recycling endosomes. We have recently reported that one of the originally identified disease-causing mutations in NHE6 (p.E287-S288del, or ΔES) resulted in a loss of its pH regulatory function. However, the impact of this mutation upon neuronal synapse formation and plasticity is unknown. Here, we investigate the consequences of the ΔES mutant upon mouse hippocampal pyramidal neurons by expressing
