Responses to the negative emotions of others by autistic, mentally retarded, and normal children.

Attention, facial affect, and behavioral responses to adults showing distress, fear, and discomfort were compared for autistic, mentally retarded, and normal children. The normal and mentally retarded children were very attentive to adults in all 3 situations. In contrast, many of the autistic children appeared to ignore or not notice the adults showing these negative affects. As a group, the autistic children looked at the adults less and were much more engaged in toy play than the other children during periods when an adult pretended to be hurt. The autistic children were also less attentive

Characteristics of adolescent psychiatric patients who engage in problematic behavior while intoxicated.

Although many adolescent psychiatric patients drink and use drugs, not all engage in problematic behaviors or experience social difficulties while intoxicated. The goal of this study was to identify characteristics of adolescent psychiatric patients for whom intoxication leads to behavioral, social, and medical problems. Alcohol-involved adolescent psychiatric inpatients were divided into high and low problem severity groups and compared on a number of measures. The groups did not differ in alcohol or drug consumption or psychiatric diagnoses. High problem severity was primarily associated wit

Predicting change trajectories of neuroticism from baseline brain structure using whole brain analyses and latent growth curve models in adolescents.

Adolescence is a vulnerable time for personality development. Especially neuroticism with its link to the development of psychopathology is of interest concerning influential factors. The present study exploratorily investigates neuroanatomical signatures for developmental trajectories of neuroticism based on a voxel-wise whole-brain structural equation modelling framework. In 1,814 healthy adolescents of the IMAGEN sample, the NEO-FFI was acquired at three measurement occasions across five years. Based on a partial measurement invariance second-order latent growth curve model we conducted who…

Evidence for Two Levels of Intimate Partner Violence and Aggression Among Incarcerated Young Male Violent Offenders.

Furthering knowledge of the subset of incarcerated partner violent offenders distinguished by aggression, anger, and hostility is relevant, as these offenders are guilty of the more severe kinds of intimate partner violence (IPV). Our aim was to identify groups with different patterns of IPV among convicted young Swedish male offenders, using data from the Development of Aggressive Antisocial Behavior Study, including 171 young men (18-25 years) convicted of a violent crime. Cluster analysis was used to identify different clusters based on amount and severity of IPV in combination with measure

[Nicolai Guleke--the founder and pioneer of neurosurgery in Thuringia].

After the representation of the biographical data and stages of development in the life of Prof. Nikolai Guleke (25th April 1878 to 4th April 1958) it is shown on the basis of his services as a director of the Surgical University Clinic in Jena how he deserved particularly well of the development of neurosurgery. Besides his skills in the surgical-technical field his close co-operation with the then director of the Neurological Clinic of the Jena University, Hans Berger, is appreciated as well as his scientific work, summarised in Volume III/1 of the ten volumes comprising surgical teachings b

Prioritization of Psychopathological Symptoms and Clinical Characterization in Psychiatric Diagnoses: A Narrative Review.

IMPORTANCE: Psychiatry mainly deals with conditions that are mediated by brain function but are not directly attributable to specific brain abnormalities. Given the lack of concrete biological markers, such as laboratory tests or imaging results, the development of diagnostic systems is difficult. OBSERVATIONS: This narrative review evaluated 9 diagnostic approaches. The validity of the DSM and the International Classification of Disorders (ICD) is limited. The Research Domain Criteria is a research framework, not a diagnostic system. The clinical utility of the quantitatively derived, dimens

Dynamic phase-locking states and personality in sub-acute mild traumatic brain injury: An exploratory study.

Research has shown that maladaptive personality characteristics, such as Neuroticism, are associated with poor outcome after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The current exploratory study investigated the neural underpinnings of this process using dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) analyses of resting-state (rs) fMRI, and diffusion MRI (dMRI). Twenty-seven mTBI patients and 21 healthy controls (HC) were included. After measuring the Big Five personality dimensions, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to obtain a superordinate factor representing emotional instability, co

Self- but not other-mentalizing moderates the association between BPD symptoms and somatic complaints in community-dwelling adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential moderator role of poor mentalization in the association between borderline personality disorder (BPD) traits and somatization, specifically focusing on the polarities of self- and other-mentalizing. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional, general population study evaluating adolescents (n = 162, 61.3% female; ages 12-18, M = 14.63, SD = 1.02). The relationship between BPD traits and somatization was evaluated with self-mentalization (attention to emotions and clarity of emotions) and other-mentalizing as moderator variables. METHODS:

Psychiatric and medical comorbidities of bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: This review summarizes the literature on psychiatric and medical comorbidities in bipolar disorder. The coexistence of other Axis I disorders with bipolar disorder complicates psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. Conversely, symptom overlap in DSM-IV diagnoses hinders definition and recognition of true comorbidity. Psychiatric comorbidity is often associated with earlier onset of bipolar symptoms, more severe course, poorer treatment compliance, and worse outcomes related to suicide and other complications. Medical comorbidity may be exacerbated or caused by pharmacotherapy of bipo

Serotonin, impulsivity, and alcohol use disorders in the older adolescent: a psychobiological study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) among adolescents are associated with a high prevalence of conduct disorder (CD), much as type II alcoholism in adults is associated with impulsive-aggressive behavior and antisocial personality traits. Adults with impulsive personality disorders and AUD demonstrate diminished central serotonergic responsiveness to serotonergic agonists. Dysregulation of central serotonergic function may contribute to a vulnerability to impulsive-aggressive behavior, CD, and AUD. We studied older adolescents, both male and female, to examine the relationships between se

[Evaluating work-personality insufficiency of schizophrenic patients; an assessment of employability in psychiatric rehabilitation].

Work-Personality means a person's motivation, values and attitude toward labor, general abilities which make his/her work performance efficient, which can be grasped through observation of behavior patterns in working situations. Problems connected with Work-Personality may cause schizophrenics some vocational difficulties. The author made out a "Work-Personality Insufficiency (WPI) Rating Scale" with 15 items, in order to estimate the employability of schizophrenics, and examined its inter-rater reliability by means of ANOVA-ICC and the results were sufficient enough. Then, WPI was applied to

Hepatitis B Non-Vaccination Rate and Associated Factors Among Healthcare Workers in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a significant occupational hazard for healthcare workers (HCWs), especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where vaccination coverage is often suboptimal. This review examined the non-vaccination rate against HBV among HCWs in LMICs. We conducted a systematic search across multiple databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus, for studies published from the inception up to 04 Feb 2024. Non-vaccination (NV) was defined as the absence of any hepatitis B vaccination dose as reported by individual studies. Pooled NV rates were

Implementing a hospital-based case management intervention for people experiencing homelessness: the navigator program.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have worse health than the general population, and higher rates of hospitalization. The transition period after discharge from hospital is often challenging for PEH, in part due to loss to follow-up, competing priorities, housing instability, and the absence of a primary care provider. In-patient hospital stays represent a window of opportunity to intervene and connect with patients, supporting them to stay in hospital and complete their treatment plan, identify and address their social needs, and support their transition of care into the comm

The Acquisition of a Diglossic Language by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students: Evidence From a Sentence Production Task.

PURPOSE: The current study aimed to examine morphosyntactic errors in sentences produced by DHH students, who are signers of Israeli Sign Language, and also users of Palestinian Colloquial Arabic (PCA) and written Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). METHOD: Nineteen school-age DHH students participated in a sentence elicitation task in which they retold events portrayed in 24 videos in PCA and MSA. A control group of 19 hearing students was tested with the same task. Sentences in each language variety were coded for grammatical versus ungrammatical productions and for type of morphosyntactic errors

Inequalities in ownership and availability of home-based vaccination records in 82 low- and middle-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Home-based records (HBRs) are widely used for recording health information including child immunisations. We studied levels and inequalities in HBR ownership in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) using data from national surveys conducted since 2010. METHODS: We used data from national household surveys (Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS)) from 82 LMICs. 465 060 children aged 6-35 months were classified into four categories: HBR seen by the interviewer; mother/caregiver never had an HBR; mother/caregiver had an HBR that

Framing Sign Language as a Health Need in Canadian and International Policy.

Although in Canada, hearing screening and early intervention are presented as a health need, we question whether young deaf and hard of hearing children's access to language is adequately supported by public health and children's services. The Ontario Infant Hearing Program has the stated mandate of supporting the language development of deaf and hard of hearing infants and young children. However, this program presents parents with early intervention service options involving either spoken or signed language, but not both together. This policy effectively restricts access to sign language lea

Trans-athletes in elite sport: inclusion and fairness.

We support gender equality and freedoms in cases in which 'like equals like'. Such inclusion is central to a progressive society. However, inclusion could potentially conflict with fairness in cases concerning transgendered athletes in elite sport. Accepted science regarding male and female physiology suggests that transwomen have an advantage over their cisgendered counterparts. This advantage stems from relatively high testosterone levels and prior male physiology of transwomen. Conversely, transmen who wish to compete in the men's division may be disadvantaged in comparison with cismen. Hen
