Diagnosis and Treatment of Nonspecific Spondylodiscitis in Adults in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH): Analysis of an Online Survey.

BACKGROUND: Approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of pyogenic spondylodiscitis vary significantly across German-speaking countries. To assess current clinical practice and compare it with prior data, a survey was conducted following the publication of the 2020 S2k guideline on the diagnosis and treatment of spondylodiscitis. METHODS: A standardized and anonymized 32-item online questionnaire was distributed to members of the German Spine Society (DWG) between April and September 2021. The survey evaluated diagnostic workflows, therapeutic strategies, and guideline adherence in Germany, Au

Diverting Ostomy Practices in Burn Surgeons Treating Full-Thickness Perianal Injuries.

Burns to the perianal region pose specific challenges in management due to the complex structure of the surrounding tissue, bacterial contamination, and repetitive stress. Fecal diversion via diverting ostomy may be elected in these injuries because of its potential to enhance wound healing and skin graft adherence; however, its use introduces alternative risks such as prolonged ileus, fistula, leakage, and failure of reversal. This study aimed to determine the perspectives of burn surgeons regarding the use of diverting ostomy for perianal burn injuries. We conducted a survey of 12 physicians

Clinical practice patterns in uveitic cataract surgery: a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Cataract is a frequent and visually significant complication of uveitis, yet perioperative management practices vary widely and are not always guided by standardized protocols, particularly in settings such as Pakistan where uveitis is relatively common. This study aimed to describe current perioperative management practices for uveitic cataract among ophthalmologists in Pakistan, providing an observational baseline to inform future evidence-based consensus rather than prescribing clinical recommendations, and to explore variations based on clinician experience and case volume. Use of dermoscopy in patients with dark skin phototypes: Practices, challenges, and diagnostic value.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an inflammatory condition that may run a rapid fatal course and calls for prompt diagnosis. Early intervention with steroids and other immunosuppressive drugs can contain the disease process and favours positive outcome. Ferritin ≥500 ng/ml is a HLH diagnostic criterion. We evaluated the diagnostic potential of admission ferritin, in children with HLH. Pediatric patients of a referral teaching hospital from Feb 2010-Oct 2013 having been investigated for ferritin on admission were included. HLH was confirmed when patients had clinical features and met

Nonawake versus Awake Placement of Spinal Cord Stimulators in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a common therapeutic approach for treating intractable chronic pain. A key factor determining SCS efficacy is lead positioning to generate paresthesias in areas of perceived pain. There are two distinct approaches to confirming appropriate coverage. 1) Sedative anesthesia with local anesthetic and intraoperative patient reporting of pain coverage. 2) General anesthesia and intraoperative neurophysiological mapping. Placement guided by neuromonitoring decreases OR times, produces more accurate placement with better pain coverage, less excess paresthe

The International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytopathology survey data reveal substantial variability in the reporting and utilization of pelvic washing and peritoneal fluid specimens among pathologists and gynecologic oncologists.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic and peritoneal washings (PW) are often taken during gynecologic resections when the presence of a neoplastic process is known or suspected. A positive PW may upstage a patient and/or impact a patient's prognosis and treatment. Two surveys were created to inform The International System for Serous Fluid Cytology, a standardized reporting system, regarding the practice and utilization of PW cytology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pathologists and cytotechnologists (n = 475) responded to a survey which examined their reporting preferences. Gynecologic oncologists (GONC) (n = 168) a

[Parenteral nutrition in pediatrics and neonatology: A review of prescribing and administering practices in an university hospital].

OBJECTIVE: Parenteral nutrition is a therapeutic strategy used to prevent and treat undernutrition in neonatology and paediatrics. Due to the associated iatrogenic risk, this activity requires specialised medical and pharmaceutical expertise, as well as structured safety protocols. The aim of this study is to characterise the practices surrounding the prescription and administration of parenteral nutrition in the paediatric and neonatal units of a French university hospital. METHODS: A single-centre descriptive study was conducted in 2023 across seven neonatology and paediatrics wards. It inv

Post-Liver Transplantation Hepatitis B Prophylaxis in Canada: Results of a National Survey.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B remains a significant concern in liver transplantation (LT) due to the risk of graft reinfection. Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG), combined with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs), has been the standard prophylactic approach. However, HBIG-free regimens are emerging, and practices vary across transplant centers. This study aims to describe the current Hepatitis B virus (HBV) prophylaxis policies in Canadian LT programs. METHODS: A virtual survey was distributed to all LT centers in Canada through the Canadian Liver Transplant Network. Data on HBIG use, NA selectio

A Survey of the Current Practice for Testing for Neonatal Hypoglycaemia in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

AIMS: Neonatal hypoglycaemia is the most common metabolic disturbance in newborns and can lead to brain injury. However, the feasibility of implementing a national recommendation to use accurate testing methods to avoid under- and over-diagnosis depends on current practise, preferences, and resources. We therefore sought to identify current testing practises for neonatal hypoglycaemia to inform recommendations for testing, including devices and timing. METHODS: An online survey was sent to relevant clinical unit leaders across the 19 health regions of New Zealand, and to members of the New Ze

Anesthesia in retinal surgery: A national survey.

INTRODUCTION: Local-regional anesthesia (LRA) techniques used for vitreoretinal surgery include peribulbar (PBA) and sub-Tenon's anesthesia (STA). Despite their increasing use over general anesthesia, there are no clear recommendations on their indications and contraindications. Furthermore, French practices in this field have not been evaluated. The objectives of this survey were to describe current French anesthesia practices for vitreoretinal surgery and to identify professionals' needs. METHODS: A 23-question questionnaire was sent to French-speaking retinal surgeons via the Club Francoph

Current and perceived optimal use of point-of-care ultrasound in urology.

INTRODUCTION: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a valuable tool for clinicians, but little data exists regarding the perceptions of ideal POCUS utilization, as compared to actual use, amongst urologists. We aim to assess how perceptions align or diverge with actual practice. METHODS: An institutional review board (IRB)-approved survey was developed and disseminated by email to 6 of 8 American Urologic Association Sections, program directors via the Society of Academic Urologists, and to 2 residency programs. The primary outcome was to assess differences in current and perceived optimal use.

Hospital-wide interventions for reducing or preventing in-hospital prescribing errors: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Prescribing errors (PEs) in hospital care lead to patient harm, prolonged hospital stays, readmissions, and mortality. Despite interventions that successfully target 'high risk' populations in trials, PE rates remain largely unchanged in real-world settings. Existing studies often focus narrowly on specific populations, overlooking the wider complexities of hospital-wide prescribing. This scoping review evaluates interventions for adult inpatients to identify knowledge gaps in how to reduce in-hospital PEs. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE.com, and the Cochrane Lib
