Solid-state NMR characterization of gas vesicle structure.

Gas vesicles are gas-filled buoyancy organelles with walls that consist almost exclusively of gas vesicle protein A (GvpA). Intact, collapsed gas vesicles from the cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae were studied by solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and most of the GvpA sequence was assigned. Chemical shift analysis indicates a coil-α-β-β-α-coil peptide backbone, consistent with secondary-structure-prediction algorithms, and complementary information about mobility and solvent exposure yields a picture of the overall topology of the vesicle subunit that is consistent with its role in stabilizing an…

Metaheuristic-driven machine learning study for early detection and classification of Parkinson's disease using feature prioritization with pelican optimization algorithm.

Parkinson disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder of the brain and afflicts approximately 6 in 10 people aged 50 years or older. PD patients have motor and speech problems, so regular visits to and monitoring of the patients are hard. It is necessary to detect the presence of PD promptly and accurately, since early treatment will contribute greatly to enhancing patients' lives. As the number of aging people increases, there is a great demand for noninvasive, reliable, and remote diagnosis. In the current work, we studied 31 patients with PD and healthy subjects, their voice recordings, to crea

Bayesian Predictive Inference for Future Order Statistics from the Two-Parameter Lomax Distribution under Type-II Censoring.

This study develops Bayesian predictive procedures for future order statistics from the two-parameter Lomax distribution under Type-II censored sampling schemes. The proposed framework combines predictive likelihood inference with Bayesian prediction based on independent gamma priors and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. Bayesian point predictors are derived under the squared error, LINEX, and general entropy loss functions, and predictive intervals are constructed from posterior predictive samples. A detailed Monte Carlo simulation study compa

A distributed fusion framework for breast cancer recurrence prediction using MapReduce.

Breast cancer recurrence remains a major clinical challenge, significantly influencing long-term survival and treatment planning. Accurate early prediction is hindered by heterogeneous clinical factors, imbalanced datasets, and the distributed nature of medical records stored across hospitals, registries, and laboratories. To address these challenges, this study proposes a MapReduce-aligned hybrid framework that combine with distributed Spark-based Gradient Boosted Trees, denoising autoencoder (AE)-derived latent representations, calibrated XGBoost, and deep tabular framework (FT-Transformer a

Dual-Layer PSO-Enhanced Federated Heterogeneous Data Fusion for Hemodialysis Complication Prediction.

Taiwan has one of the highest dialysis prevalences worldwide, making safe and reliable hemodialysis monitoring a critical sensor-based healthcare challenge. Modern hemodialysis machines integrate heterogeneous multimodal sensors (pressure, flow, conductivity, temperature, and cardiovascular signals), but differences in machine brands, data formats, and privacy constraints hinder centralized learning and robust complication prediction. This work proposes a Medical IoT-oriented federated learning framework, PSOFed-HD, that performs dual-layer Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to enhance heteroge

Computed structures of point deletion mutants and their enzymatic activities.

Point deletions in enzymes can vary in effect from negligible to complete loss of activity; however, these effects are not generally predictable. Deletions are widely observed in nature and often result in diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, or osteogenesis imperfecta. Here, we have developed an algorithm to model the perturbed structures of deletion mutants with the ultimate goal of predicting their activities. The algorithm works by deleting the specified residue from the wild-type structure, creating a gap that is closed using a combination of local and global moves that change the ba

Machine learning-based risk prediction model development for acute kidney injury in type 2 myocardial infarction patients.

Type 2 myocardial infarction (T2MI), distinguished from Type 1 myocardial infarction (T1MI) by oxygen supply - demand mismatch, has unique features. Acute kidney injury (AKI) following MI leads to severe consequences. Existing research mostly centers on T1MI, leaving a gap in T2MI related AKI studies. To address this, our research aims to explore AKI risk factors in T2MI patients and leverage machine learning algorithms to develop a model for accurate early prediction of AKI risk in this patient group. This retrospective study utilized the MIMIC-IV database (2008-2022) to analyze T2MI patients

Prediction of Sudden Cardiac Death in Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators: A Review and Comparative Study of Heart Rate Variability Features.

Over the last four decades, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) have been widely deployed to reduce sudden cardiac death (SCD) risk in patients with a history of life-threatening arrhythmia. By continuous monitoring of the heart rate, ICDs can use decision algorithms to distinguish normal cardiac sinus rhythm or supra-ventricular tachycardia from abnormal cardiac rhythms like ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation and deliver appropriate therapy such as an electrical stimulus. Despite the success of ICDs, more research is still needed, particularly in decision-making a

Long-range interdependencies aware signal analysis for rapid and accurate obstructive sleep apnea prediction.

Obstructive sleep apnea, characterized by frequent interruptions in breathing and intermittent hypoxia, is a public health concern due to its potential to increase multiple organ system morbidity and mortality. Although polysomnography is the gold standard for diagnosis, it is laborious, costly, and complex. Here, we present a biological geometry-aware artificial intelligence framework that processes physiological signals to predict sleep apnea severity. This framework extracts multifractal coupling features that capture long-range dependencies among physiological processes and integrates them
