BACKGROUND: The coagulation process in hyperacute and delayed xenograft rejection is essential and depends upon platelet adhesion and aggregation. The initial binding of platelets to the damaged endothelium is due to the interaction of the platelet receptor glycoprotein Ib with von Willebrand factor (vWF), which is present on activated endothelial cells and bound to the subendothelial matrix. We hypothesized that the use of organs from animals with homozygous von Willebrand disease (vWD), severely deficient in vWF, might prevent the thrombosis encountered in delayed xenograft rejection.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate histological changes in the primate cornea after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and to correlate them with clinical observations.
METHODS: Sixteen African green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) corneas were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy 6 weeks to 18 months after 1.5- or 3-diopter PRK.

An antiserum directed against tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), an enzyme involved in dopamine and norepinephrine synthesis, was used to visualize axons immunohistochemically in monkey neocortex. Labeled fibers were distributed throughout the entire neocortex, but they had striking patterns of regional and laminar specialization. For example, primary motor cortex contained the greatest density of TH-labeled fibers, whereas primary sensory regions were sparsely innervated. Marked heterogeneity of fiber density was also present among the association regions of the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes.
