An anatomical and connectivity atlas of the tree shrew brain to bridge rodent and primate neuroanatomy.

The tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri), phylogenetically proximal to primates, serves as a critical model for evolutionary neurobiology and disease mechanisms. High-resolution MRI provides a unique opportunity to refine its neuroanatomical architecture and facilitate cross-species comparisons. Here, we present a comprehensive, ultra-high-resolution (9.4T) MRI atlas of the tree shrew brain, integrating structural and diffusion imaging to resolve fine-scale anatomical features and whole-brain connectivity gradients. Our comparative analysis characterizes the tree shrew as a distinct evolutionary mosa

Exploring anatomical and geographical drivers of the microbiota in wild capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris): Baseline Data for zoonotic risk assessment.

Capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) play important ecological, cultural, and economic roles in Colombia, particularly in the Orinoco region. Their adaptability to human-modified environments increases contact with humans and animals, raising concerns about their role in zoonotic pathogen transmission. However, their microbiota remains largely unexplored, limiting the understanding of potential health risks relevant to conservation and management. Bacterial communities were characterized in saliva, blood, and feces from 28 wild capybaras in Casanare, Colombia, through 16S-rRNA amplicon sequen

Microbial Load and Diversity of Bacteria in Wild Animal Carcasses Sold as Bushmeat in Ghana.

The demand for wild animal meat, popularly called "bushmeat", serves as a driving force behind the emergence of infectious diseases, potentially transmitting a variety of pathogenic bacteria to humans through handling and consumption. This study investigated the microbial load and bacterial diversity in bushmeat sourced from a prominent bushmeat market in Kumasi, Ghana. Carcasses of 61 wild animals, including rodents (44), antelopes (14), and African civets (3), were sampled for microbiological analysis. These samples encompassed meat, intestines, and anal and oral swabs. The total aerobic bac

Experimental Evidence of the Benefits of Acupuncture/ Electroacupuncture for Acute Lung Injury/ Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Literature Review of Rodent Studies.

Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) encompass various etiologies and are distinguished by the onset of acute pulmonary inflammation and heightened permeability of the pulmonary vasculature, often leading to substantial morbidity and frequent mortality. There is a scarcity of viable approaches for treating effectively. In recent decades, acupuncture has been proven to be antiinflammatory. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the previously documented mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of acupuncture in ALI/ARDS, including inhibiting

EmsB Microsatellite Analysis of Echinococcus multilocularis Specimens Isolated from Belgian Patients with Alveolar Echinococcosis and from Animal Hosts.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by Echinococcus multilocularis (E. multilocularis), is a severe parasitic zoonosis that is potentially fatal for humans. The parasite is primarily transmitted by wildlife, with red foxes acting as definitive hosts and rodents as intermediate hosts, while humans can become accidental but dead-end hosts. The aim of this study is to use EmsB typing on E. multilocularis isolates from human AE cases and local animals such as foxes and rodents. In this study, retrospective EmsB typing was performed on 39 samples, including 11 tissue samples from 10 patients, 18 f

Virome Analysis of Small Mammals from the Brazilian Amazon.

The municipalities of Peixe-Boi and Santa Bárbara do Pará, both in the Pará State (eastern Amazon), have more than half of their territory deforested. Understanding the viral diversity in wildlife that inhabits the surroundings of human communities contributes to strengthening surveillance. Samples from eleven bats, seven opossums, and eight rodents from the two locations were screened by high-throughput sequencing for virome analysis. Viral reads were assigned into twenty viral families, from which the most abundant was Retroviridae. Host order, tissue type, and season showed a significant ef

Plague and tularemia surveillance in hormozgan province, Southern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Plague and tularemia are endemic rodent-borne zoonoses in Iran. This study investigated their presence of these diseases in wildlife populations in southern Iran. Sheepdogs were also surveyed as sentinel animals to provide early warning of potential outbreaks. METHODS: In August 2018, sampling involved the capturing rodents and collecting blood from wild carnivores and sheepdogs. Rodent spleen tissues and ectoparasites were analyzed using real-time PCR to detect Yersinia pestis (targeting the yihN, pla, and caf1 genes) and Francisella tularensis (targeting the ISFtu2 and fopA genes

Risk assessment of transgender people: implementation of a demasculinizing-feminizing rodent model including the evaluation of thyroid homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals whose gender identity differs from the biological sex and the social norms are defined as transgender. Sometimes transgender undergo gender affirming hormone therapy, which lasts for the entire life making essential to evaluate its potential long-term effects. Moreover, transgender can represent a susceptible sub-group of population and specific attention is needed in risk assessment, including the development of targeted animal models. Aim of the study is the implementation of a rodent demasculinizing-feminizing model through the setting of appropriate dose of hormone

Cerebrospinal fluid shotgun proteomics identifies distinct proteomic patterns in cerebral amyloid angiopathy rodent models and human patients.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a form of small vessel disease characterised by the progressive deposition of amyloid β protein in the cerebral vasculature, inducing symptoms including cognitive impairment and cerebral haemorrhages. Due to their accessibility and homogeneous disease phenotypes, animal models are advantageous platforms to study diseases like CAA. Untargeted proteomics studies of CAA rat models (e.g. rTg-DI) and CAA patients provide opportunities for the identification of novel biomarkers of CAA. We performed untargeted, data-independent acquisition proteomic shotgun analys

VX-765 Alleviates Circadian Rhythm Disorder in a Rodent Model of Traumatic Brain Injury Plus Hemorrhagic Shock and Resuscitation.

Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) can result in persistent complications, including circadian rhythm disorder, that substantially affect not only the injured people, but also the mood and social interactions with the family and the community. Pyroptosis in GFAP-positive astrocytes plays a vital role in inflammatory changes post-TBI. We determined whether VX-765, a low molecular weight caspase-1 inhibitor, has potential therapeutic value against astrocytic inflammation and pyroptosis in a rodent model of TBI plus hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HSR). A weight-drop plus bleeding and refus

Systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of chronic peri-adolescent cannabinoid exposure on schizophrenia-like behaviour in rodents.

BACKGROUND: The link between cannabis use and schizophrenia is well-established in epidemiological studies, especially among adolescents with early-onset use. However, this association in rodent models is less clear. This meta-analysis examined the effects of adolescent cannabinoid exposure on distinct schizophrenia-like behaviours in rodents and how experimental variations influence outcomes. METHODS: Following a pre-registered protocol (CRD42022338761), we searched PubMed, Ovid Medline, Embse and APA PsychInfo for English-language original studies until May 2024. We synthesised data from ex

Erinacine S, a small active component derived from Hericium erinaceus, protects oligodendrocytes and alleviates mood abnormalities in cuprizone-exposed rodents.

Hericium erinaceus mycelium extract (HEM), containing erinacine A (HeA) and erinacine S (HeS), has shown promise in promoting the differentiation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) into mature oligodendrocytes (OLs), crucial for myelin production in the central nervous system (CNS). The main aim of this study was to characterize the protective effects of HEM and its components on OLs and myelin in demyelinating rodents by exposure to cuprizone (CPZ), a copper chelating agent commonly used to induce demyelination in the corpus callosum of the brain. Rats were fed by CPZ-containing diet a
