Posttraumatic growth in parents of children who underwent liver transplantation: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Confronted with the traumatic experience of a child’s liver transplantation, parents may experience positive psychological changes alongside distress. This study aimed to: assess the level of posttraumatic growth (PTG) in this population, and identify factors associated with PTG, focusing on deliberate rumination, intrusive rumination, and social support. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved parent-caregivers of young children (≤ 3 years) after their first liver transplantation at a Chinese tertiary hospital (May 2023–June 2024). Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0. Group co

Medical student mental health and the role of rumination.

INTRODUCTION: Mental illness is the second-leading reason for tertiary students in Aotearoa New Zealand to consider dropping out of studies. Meta-analyses report moderate or greater symptoms of depression in 27% and anxiety in 34% of medical students. Rumination has been identified as a transdiagnostic risk factor for anxiety and depression symptoms in medical student populations, but no studies in New Zealand thus far have studied rumination alongside mental health symptoms in tertiary students. METHODS: We conducted an online survey in 2023 to examine the rate of depression and anxiety symp

A network analysis of adolescent nonsuicidal self-injury from the perspective of an invalidating family environment.

This study used network analysis to examine the conditional association structure of psychological and environmental risk factors related to nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents in different invalidating family environments. Cross-sectional data were collected from adolescents in Northwest China (initial N = 9697). After data quality control, defensive responding screening, family-environment grouping, and propensity score matching, 3652 adolescents were included in the main analyses, with 1826 in each of the low- and high-invalidating family environment groups. We estimated separa

Co-Rumination with Peers Predicts Risk for Depression in Offspring of Mothers with Major Depressive Disorder.

Although offspring of mothers with major depressive disorder (MDD) are at heightened risk for the disorder, most never develop depression, highlighting the need to identify moderators of risk. Co-rumination, the tendency to frequently and passively discuss problems with a peer without any active problem-solving, is a known risk factor in youth and may help to identify which offspring of mothers with MDD are at greatest risk. We tested this hypothesis using data from a multi-wave longitudinal study, examining prospective changes in youths' depressive symptoms and risk for MDD onset during the t

Stress generation and subsequent repetitive negative thinking link poor executive functioning and depression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Poor executive functioning (EF) has been consistently linked to depression, but questions remain regarding mechanisms driving this association. The current study tested whether poor EF is linked to depression symptoms six weeks later via dependent stressors (model 1) and stressors perceived to be uncontrollable (model 2) at week two (W2) and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) at W4 during early COVID-19 in college students. DESIGN: This was a longitudinal study with four timepoints spanning six weeks (April-June 2020). METHODS: Participants (N = 154) completed onlin

Longitudinal cross-lagged association between posttraumatic stress disorder, post-traumatic growth, and deliberate rumination among healthcare staff 2 years after the COVID-19 pandemic in Hubei Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) are inspiratory areas of psychological research in which deliberate rumination has important implications. However, these relationships have not yet been assessed in the COVID-19 pandemic using longitudinal designs. METHODS: In this study, measures of PTSD, PTG, and deliberate rumination were collected from 2,292 healthcare staff members at two-time points six months apart in 2022-2023 from two general hospitals in Hubei Province, China. A cross-lagged analysis was used to simultaneously determine the directiona

Understanding the effect of the caring dimension of PYD on depression: the role of positive and negative affect regulation strategies in Spanish emerging adults.

BACKGROUND: Positive Youth Development (PYD) has been associated with positive results in the transition to adulthood. Within the 5Cs model of PYD, the Caring dimension has been defined as the ability to feel sympathy and empathy towards others. However, the literature has shown some controversial results on the role of Caring in the psychological adjustment of young people. The aim of this study was to analyze the mediating role of strategies for coping with negative affect (i.e., distraction and depressive rumination) and strategies for coping with positive affect (i.e., dampening and positi

Dampening of positive affect partially accounts for the association between women's history of child maltreatment and current depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment exerts lasting effects on emotion regulation, which in turn accounts for adult's risk for psychopathology such as depression. In this vulnerable population, deficits in emotion regulation of negative affect are well established and include reliance on emotional suppression and rumination strategies. In contrast, alterations in the regulation of positive affect associated with child maltreatment history are less understood. We examined the role of positive rumination and dampening of positive affect, two emotion regulation strategies that may be impaired by the ex

Intra- versus interpersonal emotion regulation: Associations with affect, relationship quality and closeness, and biological markers of stress.

Past research has focused on emotion regulation (ER) as an intrapersonal endeavor (managing one's own emotions), leaving many questions unanswered about interpersonal emotion regulation (IER; receiving support from another person to regulate one's emotions). This study sought to understand the effects of two common IER strategies (corumination, codistraction) by comparing them with each other and their intrapersonal counterparts (rumination, distraction) on negative and positive affect, relationship quality and closeness, and biological stress responses (i.e., cortisol and salivary alpha-amyla

Predicting Repetitive Negative Thinking in Daily Life: Insights From Brain-Based Graph-Theoretical Predictive Modeling.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in the functional connectivity of large-scale brain networks, including the default mode network (DMN), salience network, frontoparietal network (FPN), and limbic network, have been implicated in repetitive negative thinking (RNT), a construct characterized by persistent and intrusive thoughts. However, the potential of these large-scale network abnormalities for predicting RNT in daily life remains underexplored. METHODS: We leveraged brain-based graph-theoretical predictive modeling (GPM) to predict daily-life RNT in 54 individuals. Functional magnetic resonance im

Attention mechanisms of social anxiety in daily life: Unique effects of negative self-focused attention on post-event processing.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by biased patterns of attention that are theorized to play a key role in maintaining symptoms. SAD has been linked to externally oriented attentional biases (i.e., towards social-evaluative threats) and internally oriented attentional biases (i.e., towards anxiety-laden thoughts and sensations), both of which might increase proneness for post-event processing (PEP), a form of rumination about the negative aspects of past social events. However, prior research examining attentional biases in SAD has primarily been conducted in laboratory settings,

'Hidden' anger as a risk factor for operational health: An exploratory approach among French military personnel.

Military personnel are repeatedly exposed to multiple stressors, and are sometimes characterized by high levels of anger. Evidence suggests that this anger can become dysfunctional, and impact the health status of populations chronically exposed to stress. In particular, rumination (understood as perseverative thoughts about a past event), provides a theoretical framework for investigating how anger may impact stress regulation abilities in military personnel declared fit for deployment. This exploratory study aimed therefore to examine the impact of the anger profile on psychological sufferin

Suicide-specific rumination as a predictor of suicide planning and intent.

BACKGROUND: Suicide-specific rumination (SSR), that is repetitive negative thinking about suicide, has been proposed as a risk factor for suicidal behavior. Yet, few studies have investigated associations between SSR and suicide intent and planning in a longitudinal study design. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between SSR, suicide intent, suicide planning and suicide attempts in a sample of adult outpatients undergoing psychotherapy. METHOD: Data from N = 637 patients (58.4% female, 41.6% male; Mage = 35.81, SDage = 13.50, range: 18-79 years) who started t

Mind-wandering in daily life in depressed individuals: An experience sampling study.

BACKGROUND: A diagnostic criterion for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is difficulty concentrating and increased distractibility. One form of distraction that occurs in everyday life is mind-wandering. The current study aims to test how individuals with MDD and healthy controls differ in their mind-wandering in everyday life. METHODS: Adults diagnosed with MDD (n = 53) and healthy controls (n = 53) completed a week of experience sampling, with prompts administered up to eight times per day. At each prompt, participants reported the occurrence and characteristics of their mind-wandering. They

A pilot study examining differential relationships between inflammation and emotion dysregulation across young and middle adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion dysregulation disrupts normal biological function by increasing inflammation, thus putting people at risk for long-term health issues. These risks are amplified through aging, and accelerated biological aging poses a significant threat to longevity. This pilot study examined several emotion regulation skills, as well as emotion dysregulation broadly, and their relationship with inflammation among physically healthy adults. METHOD: Community members (N = 79, Mage = 30.88, SD = 11.4) completed a laboratory visit where they had their blood drawn to test for inflammation (inter

Dialogical Integration of Life Experiences and Successful Aging.

This article examines the hypothesis that the dialogical integration of life experiences is related to successful aging. Life story interviews with 93 older Czech adults were sorted into categories characterized by specific patterns of life experience integration: (i) without dialogical processes, (ii) with differentiated I-positions, (iii) with dialogical relationships, (iv) partially integrated, and (v) completely integrated. The results indicated that the categories were ordered, yielding low-level correlations with scales of successful aging in predicted directions. A comparison of the cat

Psychosocial Factors Influence Sexual Satisfaction among Women with Vulvodynia.

Vulvodynia affects about 8% of women, many of whom report a negative impact on their ability to have sexually satisfying relationships. In this study, we examined predictors of sexual satisfaction in 207 women with clinically confirmed vulvodynia. We adapted a model examining resilience in chronic pain patients originally developed by Sturgeon and Zautra to include resilience factors (communication with partner about sexual health and coping strategies) and vulnerable factors (abuse history, pain intensity, rumination). These variables were regressed onto sexual satisfaction. In the full model

The Association Between Negative Trauma-Related Cognitions and Pain-Related Functional Status Among Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder.

Among veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are highly prevalent. Furthermore, PTSD frequently co-occurs with chronic pain (CP), and CP is associated with an increased risk of AUD. Pain-related beliefs and appraisals are significantly associated with poorer pain-related functional status, yet few studies have examined negative trauma-related cognitions and their impact on pain-related functional disability in veterans with co-occurring PTSD and AUD. Accordingly, we examined the association between negative trauma-related cognitions and pain severity a
