A chronic progressive, neurodegenerative disease has been identified in 4 closely related flocks of purebred Rambouillet sheep. Blindness, circling, proprioceptive deficits, reduced cognition, and poor body condition are the main clinical signs. Prominent lesions include markedly decreased cerebral size and weight, enlarged cerebral ventricles, and intraneuronal accumulations of autofluorescent pigment. Affected sheep usually die between 1 and 2 years of age. The clinical signs and postmortem findings are consistent with neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis.

An experimental model was established to investigate the possibility of repairing cervical nerve roots avulsed from the spinal cord, as occurs in traction injuries of the brachial plexus. Quantitative measurements of blood flow (BF) to skin and several other tissues were made using radioactive microspheres in conscious sheep. The sheep were from established flocks that had been selectively bred for greater (Fleece plus) or lesser (Fleece minus) wool production. Pharmacokinetic studies of the histamine H1-receptor antagonist diphenhydramine were conducted in eight chronically instrumented pregnant sheep at 126-138 days of gestation. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed and compared with the complement fixation test (CFT) and the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IIFAT) for the detection of antibodies to C. psittaci in sheep. The role of GABA receptors in the control of abomasal motility was examined electromyographically in four conscious ewes by injecting intracerebroventricularly and intravenously selective GABA(A)- and GABA(B)-receptor agonists and antagonists. The efficacy of intraruminal albendazole (ABZ) capsules (Profitril-Captec) and the effect of treatment on productivity were studied in 300 ewes infected with gastrointestinal nematodes and the trematode Dicrocoelium dendriticum.
