Lipid storage disease in 4 sibling superb birds-of-paradise (Lophorina superba).

Pedigree analysis, clinical, gross, microscopic, ultrastructural, and lipidomic findings in 4 female superb bird-of-paradise (SBOP, Lophorina superba) siblings led to the diagnosis of a primary inherited glycerolipid storage disease. These birds were the offspring of a related breeding pair (inbreeding coefficient = 0.1797) and are the only known SBOPs to display this constellation of lesions. The birds ranged from 0.75 to 4.3 years of age at the time of death. Two birds were euthanized and 1 died naturally due to the disease, and 1 died of head trauma with no prior clinical signs. Macroscopic…

The experiential perspectives of siblings and partners caring for a loved one with an eating disorder in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Caring for a loved one with an eating disorder typically comes with a multitude of challenges, yet siblings and partners are often overlooked. It is important to understand if current clinical guidance for supporting carers are effective and being utilised for these groups, to help meet their needs. AIMS: To identify the experiential perspectives of siblings and partners of a loved one with an eating disorder compared with guidance for improving the adequacy of support provided to carers published by Beat and Academy for Eating Disorders. METHOD: Three online focus groups were he…

Disclosure of Sibling Sexual Abuse by Hospitalized Adolescent Girls: Three Case Reports.

Although sibling sexual abuse (SSA) may be the most common type of intrafamilial sexual abuse, it has not been widely studied. The lack of studies makes it very difficult for clinicians to create a comprehensive framework about this complex phenomenon, particularly in comparison with other forms of intrafamilial sexual abuse, such as father-daughter incest. SSA is still underrecognized and underdisclosed but it has the potential to be every bit as harmful as sexual abuse by a parent. The topic rarely finds its way into the more general psychiatry or social work literature. It is imperative to

A Longitudinal Study on the Influence of Sibling Support and HIV Testing Among Black Youth.

BACKGROUND: Healthy familial relationships have been noted as protective against HIV infection among the Black youth. Previous studies have indicated that sibling relationships are important over the life course and may have a significant influence on health behaviors and health promotion. However, the specific interaction between sibling relationships, HIV prevention, and HIV testing is underexplored. This longitudinal study aims to examine the role of sibling relationships, healthcare providers, and other contextual factors on HIV testing. METHODS: This study was conducted via the secondary

Prevalence of sibling-species of Anopheles (Cellia) fluviatilis complex in Himachal Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Malaria is one of the most infectious and life-threatening vector borne disease in the tropics. Climate change can significantly influence malaria epidemiology and expansion of malaria vectors to hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh in India, hitherto considered areas of low transmission. Entomological surveillance in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh revealed high density of a proven efficient vector of malaria, Anopheles fluviatilis, but transmission intensity of malaria was found very low. It was therefore considered prudent to investigate the sibling-species composi

Conventional ICSI vs. physiological selection of spermatozoa for ICSI (picsi) in sibling oocytes.

BACKGROUND: Physiological selection of spermatozoa for ICSI (PICSI) is a sperm selection method based on sperm binding to hyaluronic acid. Previous studies on the effect of hyaluronic acid binding assays on fertilization and embryo quality have shown inconsistent results. Previous sibling oocyte studies have not found a significant improvement in fertilization or embryo development with hyaluronic acid binding assays. OBJECTIVE: To compare fertilization and embryo development between standard intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and PICSI in sibling oocytes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is

Usual or unusual presentations of Dirofilaria repens in two sibling dogs: a case report.

This study describes two different manifestations of Dirofilaria repens infection in sibling dogs with microfilaremia. Dog 1, asymptomatic, harbored a gravid female of D. repens on the parietal layer of tunica vaginalis of one testicle and showed a marked circulating eosinophilia (3.3·103/μL). Both testicles were normal in shape and size without any gross lesions. Dog 2 had a pyotraumatic dermatitis. The cases were confirmed by PCR and sequencing. The sequences obtained showed 100% identity with those of D. repens isolated from human scrotum in Croatia. The treatment with moxidectin 2.5% and i

Kawasaki disease in siblings in close temporal proximity to each other-what are the implications?

Kawasaki disease (KD) is the commonest medium vessel vasculitis in children. The etiology of KD remains an enigma despite extensive research. Infections are considered to be one of the triggers for KD, especially in genetically susceptible hosts. KD occurring within a short time interval among siblings is an important clinical observation supporting this hypothesis. In addition, siblings of children with KD are at a higher risk of developing the disease as compared with other children. Screening for KD in febrile siblings, therefore, seems prudent. This would help initiate timely therapy and p…

They stress the centrality of the sibling subsystem in the children's lives and the siblings' role in the children's survival of CA. The current study's findings emphasize the urgency of continuing to develop studies in this area, as they will likely contribute to both prevention and intervention efforts.

Quantitative trait variation in ASD probands and toddler sibling outcomes at 24 months.

BACKGROUND: Younger siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at increased likelihood of receiving an ASD diagnosis and exhibiting other developmental concerns. It is unknown how quantitative variation in ASD traits and broader developmental domains in older siblings with ASD (probands) may inform outcomes in their younger siblings. METHODS: Participants included 385 pairs of toddler siblings and probands from the Infant Brain Imaging Study. ASD probands (mean age 5.5 years, range 1.7 to 15.5 years) were phenotyped using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R), the …

Smallness at Birth and Neonatal Death: Reexamining the Current Indicator Using Sibling Data.

OBJECTIVE: The similarity in size among siblings has implications for neonatal death, but research in this area is lacking in the United States. We examined the association between small-for-gestational age (SGA), defined as a birthweight <10th percentile for gestational age, and neonatal death, defined as death within the first 28 days of life, among second births who had an elder sibling with SGA ("repeaters") versus those whose elder sibling did not have SGA ("nonrepeaters"). STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study including 179,436 women who had their firs…

Estimating the effect of Prenatal Care Coordination in Wisconsin: A sibling fixed effects analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate Prenatal Care Coordination's (PNCC) effect on birth outcomes for Wisconsin Medicaid-covered deliveries. DATA SOURCE: A longitudinal cohort of linked Wisconsin birth records (2008-2012), Medicaid claims, and state-administered social services. STUDY DESIGN: We defined PNCC treatment dichotomously (none vs. any) and by service level (none vs. assessment/care plan only vs. service uptake). Outcomes were birthweight (grams), low birthweight (<2500 g), gestational age (completed weeks), and preterm birth (<37 weeks). We estimated PNCC's effect on birth outcomes, adjusting f

A retrospective study on the influence of siblings' relatedness in Bolivian patients with chronic Chagas disease.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is a protozoan infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. The disease has a chronic course in which 20-30% of the patients would develop progressive damage to the cardiovascular system and the gastrointestinal tube. We are still unable to predict who will develop end-organ damage but there are some acquired and genetic risk factors already known. RESULTS: We reviewed data from 833 patients with serologically confirmed Chagas disease in this retrospective study. Patients were classified as siblings or non-siblings (controls) and the results of pre-treatment blood PCR ass…

Age at Menarche and Cardiometabolic Health: A Sibling Analysis in the Scottish Family Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of age at menarche and cardiometabolic health report conflicting findings, and only a few could account for childhood characteristics. We aimed to estimate the associations of age at menarche with cardiovascular risk factors in unrelated women and within sister groups, under the assumption that within-sibship estimates will be better adjusted for shared genetics and early life environment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Our study included 7770 women, from 5984 sibships, participating in the GS:SFHS (Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study). We used fixed- and betw

Acaricide-Mediated Competition Between the Sibling Species Tetranychus cinnabarinus and Tetranychus urticae.

The carmine spider mite (Tetranychus cinnabarinus [Acarifonnes: Tetranychidae]) and the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae [Acarifonnes: Tetranychidae]) are two notorious pests of agricultural crops. Control of these pests has been dependent upon using different kinds of acaricides. The purpose of this study was to determine the differential responses of these two pest species collected from crops in the same field to acaricide treatments. Field trials have shown that without spraying acaricides, T. cinnabarinus will displace T. urticae. However, the application of abamectin has the

Neuronostatin exerts actions on pituitary that are unique from its sibling peptide somatostatin.

Neuronostatin, a somatostatin gene-encoded peptide, exerts important physiological and metabolic actions in diverse tissues. However, the direct biological effects of neuronostatin on pituitary function of humans and primates are still unknown. This study used baboon (Papio anubis) primary pituitary cell cultures, a species that closely models human physiology, to demonstrate that neuronostatin inhibits basal, but not ghrelin-/GnRH-stimulated, growth hormone (GH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in a dose- and time-dependent fashion, without affecting the secretion of other pituitary hor

The Combination of Sibling Victimization and Parental Child Maltreatment on Mental Health Problems and Delinquency.

This study examined how the combination of sibling victimization and parental child maltreatment is related to mental health problems and delinquency in childhood and adolescence. Co-occurrence, additive associations, and interactive associations of sibling victimization and parental child maltreatment were investigated using a sample of 2,053 children aged 5-17 years from the National Survey of Children's Exposure to Violence. The results provide primarily evidence for additive associations and only suggest some co-occurrence and interactive associations of sibling victimization and child mal
