Volatiles emitted from the leaves of Lycopersicon esculentum at the two-, ten-leaf and anthesis periods were collected by a gas absorbing method and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry. In total, 33 compounds of volatiles emitted from three developmental stage plants were separated and identified, and quantitatively analyzed by the internal standard addition method. All of the samples of volatile were found to be rich in monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. beta-phellandrene and caryophyllene predominated in the volatiles of the leaves of plants at the two- and ten-leaf stages. Multitrophic interactions mediate the ability of fungal pathogens to cause plant disease and the ability of bacterial antagonists to suppress disease. Antibiotic production by antagonists, which contributes to disease suppression, is known to be modulated by abiotic and host plant environmental conditions. Here, we demonstrate that a pathogen metabolite functions as a negative signal for bacterial antibiotic biosynthesis, which can determine the relative importance of biological control mechanisms available to antagonists and which may also influence fungus-bacterium ecological interactions. The physical structure of fodder beets, raw potatoes, ensiled pressed sugar beet pulp, ensiled brewers grains, and corn cob silage was evaluated in diets containing concentrates and either corn silage or grass silage as the roughage source. In one series of experiments, the chewing activity of eight cows was measured over 4 d. The beet pulp and fodder beets were added to the two roughage sources at two ratios [20:80 and 35:65, dry matter (DM) basis]. Potatoes, brewers grains, and corn cob silage were fed in a fixed amount (5 to 6 kg of DM) with corn silage. The chewing indexes (eating and rumi

Eight individuals with asthma who had been diagnosed as sulfite sensitive on the basis of double-blind capsule-beverage challenges were subjected to challenges with various sulfited foods, including lettuce, shrimp, dried apricots, white grape juice, dehydrated potatoes (as mashed potatoes), and mushrooms. Four of these patients failed to respond to challenges with any of the sulfited foods. The other four patients experienced a decrease in pulmonary function on double-blind challenges with sulfited lettuce. Two of three of these patients reacted to challenges with dried apricots and white gra

The gem-difluoroalkylthio (-SCF2-) moiety has achieved great success in medicinal chemistry, but its application in agrochemicals remains underexplored because of synthetic challenges. Herein, we report a series of 1,2,4-triazole derivatives bearing the gem-difluoromethylthio group and evaluate their antifungal activities against ten phytopathogenic strains. Compound 7n exhibits potent broad-spectrum activity, with EC50 values of 0.007, 0.121, 0.122, and 0.068 μg/mL against Botrytis cinerea, Phytophthora capsici, Curvularia lunata, and Alternaria solani, respectively, outperforming tebuconazol

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (Tobamovirus fructirugosum, ToBRFV) is an emerging tobamovirus threatening tomato and pepper production worldwide. Accurate and scalable detection methods are essential to limit its agricultural impact. In this study, we report the recombinant production and characterization of ToBRFV capsid (CPToBRFV) and movement (MPToBRFV) proteins as candidate antigens for serological detection. Both coding sequences were amplified from infected tomato tissue and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). CPToBRFV exhibited partial solubility under low-temperatu

Cold stress poses a significant challenge to tomato production. SlNAC3, an NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2) transcription factor in tomato, plays a critical role in the early response to cold stress. However, only a few genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis were identified as NAC3-targets negatively regulating cold tolerance. This study investigated the mechanisms by which SlNAC3 influenced cold tolerance. RNA-seq analyses of SlNAC3 transient silencing and overexpression lines subjected to 2-h cold stress revealed that SlNAC3 downregulated the ribosome pathway while upregulating the ubiquitin-pr

Plants continuously monitor their environment to adapt to threats affecting health and fitness. Cell-surface receptors detect conserved microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs) or endogenous immunogenic signals to activate signaling pathways that induce broad-spectrum disease resistance, known as pattern-triggered immunity (PTI). In Arabidopsis thaliana, the leucine-rich repeat receptor kinase MIK2 emerged as a versatile receptor involved in perceiving endogenous SCOOP peptides as well as potential MAMPs derived from Fusarium and related fungi. While SCOOP perception appears restricted to

Our study revealed that SlTCP16 can transcriptional activation and interaction with Sl4CL3, thereby enhancing the tomato's resistance toPstDC3000. This resistance is associated with an increased accumulation of lignin. Lignin deposition serves as a critical physical barrier against bacterial pathogens. However, the precise regulatory networks orchestrating this defense response in tomato remain incompletely understood. We identify the transcription factor SlTCP16 as a novel positive regulator of tomato immunity against Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst DC3000). We show that Pst DC3000 infec

Positive-sense RNA viruses using subgenomic RNAs (sgRNAs) cause severe crop losses, yet this conserved feature has rarely been exploited for antiviral engineering. Here, we constructed a virus-activated synthetic immune circuit, wherein viral sgRNA production drives host defense responses via a translation inhibition-transcription activation (TI-TA) module. An optimized translational repression element (dsBC) minimized basal expression while enabling virus-specific activation of resistance-inducing proteins (RIPs) by cognate viral sgRNA promoters. This circuit functioned against three major sg

Phosphoinositide-specific phospholipases C (PI-PLCs) are signaling enzymes that hydrolyze membrane phosphoinositides to generate lipid- and lipid-derived second messengers. In plants, PI-PLCs have been implicated in various physiological processes, including immunity. Tomato SlPLC2 was previously shown to be implicated in susceptibility to the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea. However, whether this observation extends to pathogens with different lifestyles and evolutionary origins remains unknown. Here, we investigated SlPLC2 function during infection with Phytophthora infestans, a globall

The current study provides the first detailed characterization of two novel bacteriophages, DG23 and RG24, that infect Pseudomonas marginalis, a causative agent of soft rot in potato and other vegetable crops. The phages were assessed for environmental stability, genetic characteristics, and biocontrol efficacy. Both DG23 and RG24 showed broad tolerance throughout a wide pH range (3-9), with RG24 still viable at pH 11, while DG23 was more sensitive to extreme pH conditions. Thermal stability assay demonstrated that both phages remained infectious up to 45 °C, but activity decreased dramaticall

This study presents the development of a multifunctional, biodegradable xerogel film based on amylopectin and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (poly(NIPAm)) incorporating sulfur and nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (S, N-CQDs) derived from red onion peels (ROP). The formation mechanism and stability of the composite film were investigated using DFT calculations, revealing enhanced interactions and stability in the S, N-CQDs-containing film (amylopectin-S, N-CQDs15). FTIR and SEM analyses confirmed the successful incorporation of S, N-CQDs and revealed a tighter pore structure in the composite fil

Food preservation technologies that combine antimicrobial activity with controlled-release functionality are essential to mitigate postharvest losses. Herein, chitosan (CS)-based coatings incorporating S-nitroso-N-acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP) as a nitric oxide (NO) donor were developed for sustained antimicrobial release and fruit preservation. The CS/SNAP coatings showed high transparency (79.5-79.9 %), strong UV-blocking (T350 nm < 1 %), and rapid water solubility, with flexibility increasing alongside SNAP loading. The coatings released NO over 15 days, exhibiting potent antibacterial eff
