Molecular Detection and Assessment of Risk Factors for Tick-Borne Diseases in Sheep and Goats from Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases mainly, theileriosis, babesiosis and anaplasmosis cause significant economic losses in livestock globally, including Turkey. The tick-borne pathogens of small ruminants in Turkey have been studied widely but information on molecular characterization and disease occurrence is still limited. METHODS: In this study, both microscopy and molecular detection and characterization for Theileria spp. Babesia ovis, Anaplasma ovis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum was conducted. A total of 133 blood samples of tick-infested small ruminants (105 sheep and 28 goats) were collec

Diversity of Rickettsia species in border regions of northwestern China.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia species belonging to the spotted fever group (SFG) cause infections in humans, domestic animals and wildlife. At least ten SFG Rickettsia species are known to occur in China. However, the distribution of rickettsiae in ticks and fleas in the border region of northwestern China have not been systematically studied to date. RESULTS: A total of 982 ticks (Rhipicephalus turanicus, Dermacentor marginatus, D. nuttalli and Haemaphysalis punctata) and 5052 fleas (18 flea species from 14 species of wild mammals) were collected in ten and five counties, respectively, of Xinjiang

Relapsing fever borreliosis in Eurasia--forgotten, but certainly not gone!

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) has been reported in Eurasia and attributed mainly to Borrelia persica, although other entities have also been described. Ornithodoros tholozani is the most important tick vector, found in India and Kashmir, the southern countries of the former USSR, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, and Cyprus. It inhabits caves, ruins, and burrows of rodents and small mammals. In the northern countries, O. tholozani also lives in houses and cowsheds. In Israel, 30-60% of caves were found to be infested. PCR studies of Borrelia infection of O. tholozani ticks

Human babesiosis: an emerging tick-borne disease.

Human babesiosis is an important emerging tick-borne disease. Babesia divergens, a parasite of cattle, has been implicated as the most common agent of human babesiosis in Europe, causing severe disease in splenectomized individuals. In the US, Babesia microti, a babesial parasite of small mammals, has been the cause of over 300 cases of human babesiosis since 1969, resulting in mild to severe disease, even in non-splenectomised patients. Changing ecology has contributed greatly to the increase and expansion of human babesiosis in the US. A relatively recently described babesial parasite, the W

Cattle ticks and tick-borne diseases: a review of Uganda's situation.

Herein we review the epidemiology of ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDs), their impact on livestock health and on the economy, control and associated challenges in Uganda. Ticks are leading vectors of economically important pathogens and are widespread in Uganda due to suitable climatic conditions. Besides the physical injury inflicted on the animal host, ticks transmit a number of pathogens that can cause morbidity and mortality of livestock if untreated, resulting in economic losses. Uganda suffers an aggregated annual loss (direct and indirect) of over USD 1.1 billion in the TTBDs complex

A large-scale screening for the taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus, and the meadow tick, Dermacentor reticulatus, in southern Scandinavia, 2016.

The taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus, has previously been limited to eastern Europe and northern Asia, but recently its range has expanded to Finland and northern Sweden. The species is of medical importance, as it, along with a string of other pathogens, may carry the Siberian and Far Eastern subtypes of tick-borne encephalitis virus. These subtypes appear to cause more severe disease, with higher fatality rates than the central European subtype. Until recently, the meadow tick, Dermacentor reticulatus, has been absent from Scandinavia, but has now been detected in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. D

Mediterranean theileriosis and other tick transmitted piroplasmoses in cattle in Minorca (Balearic Islands, Spain): the effect of tick control on prevalence levels analyzed by reverse line blot (RLB) macroarrays.

Mediterranean theileriosis, caused by Theileria annulata, is endemic in Minorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). The present study analyzes the prevalence of piroplasm infections in cattle in Minorca using reverse line blot (RLB) macroarrays, as well as the effect of herd tick control on those prevalence levels. One hundred and nineteen animals from 12 herds were sampled in representative areas of the island. Information was gathered regarding tick control for the animals (frequency and acaricide used) in each herd. More than 87% of the animals were positive for the presence of piroplasm species. Th

[Cattle babesiosis].

Babesia parasites are intraerytrocytic Protozoa that infect wide range of domestic and wild animals and occasionally man causing babesiosis (piroplasmosis). Babesiosis also known in cattle as tick fever or red water fever is most important arthropod-borne disease of bovinae ungulates worldwide with areas of Africa, Asia, South and Central America, Australia and finally Europe. Since Smith and Kilborne had first described potential role of ticks in spread of piroplasmosis within animals, only United States till end of 50 of XX century eradicated the disease from the continent. In other, especia

Vector competence of Amblyomma americanum (Acari: Ixodidae) for Rickettsia rickettsii.

Rickettsia rickettsii - the etiologic agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) - is widely spread across the Americas. In the US, Dermacentor spp. ticks are identified as primary vectors of R. rickettsii and Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. has been implicated in transmission of this pathogen in several locations in the Southwest. Conversely, ticks of the genus Amblyomma are recognized vectors of RMSF in Central and South America, but not in the US. A. americanum is one of the most aggressive human-biting ticks in the US, whose geographical range overlaps with that of reported RMSF cases. Des

Insights into the diversity of ticks and tick-borne parasites from lions (Panthera leo) and cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) in selected conservation facilities in South Africa.

Ticks are known vectors of pathogens affecting animals and humans globally. However, there are gaps in knowledge regarding the diversity of ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) affecting wildlife in South Africa. This study aimed to determine the occurrence, diversity, and distribution of ticks and TBPs in cheetahs and lions from different localities in South Africa using morphological and molecular techniques. Thirty-three blood samples and 94 ticks were opportunistically collected from 30 cheetahs and four lions in 12 conservation facilities. DNA was extracted from 88 ticks and 33 blood sam

Knowledge and perception of equine ticks and tick-borne diseases of Pennsylvania horse owners and caretakers.

There is limited data on current knowledge of Pennsylvania horse caretakers on tick-borne diseases (TBDs), tick identification, and tick management practices. This study aimed to determine tick knowledge, concern, and management among Pennsylvania equine caretakers using an online survey. Descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA tests were used to analyze data. The survey received 894 responses (539 completed) from Pennsylvania equine owners and caretakers. The largest proportion of respondents cared for 3-5 horses (31 %), followed by 2 horses (27 %). Veterinarian-confirmed diagnosis rates of

Research on Piroplasmorida and other tick-borne agents: Are we going the right way?

The use of molecular diagnostic techniques in the study of ticks and tick-borne agents has increased dramatically in the last few decades, and while conferring the advantages of rapidity, sensitivity and accuracy, they can also be misused by the research community, who have shown an increasing overreliance on the data they produce, often completely abandoning more traditional approaches such as microscopy and serology. In this short review examples are provided of 'findings' that are apparently at odds with well-established eco-epidemiological knowledge, ranging from descriptions of new specie

Postexposure prophylaxis of tick-borne relapsing fever: lessons learned from recent outbreaks in Israel.

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is endemic in Israel. Military activities pose a particular risk for TBRF, and its prevention is based on heightened awareness and risk stratification by active surveillance of tick bites and selective postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) with doxycycline for tick-bitten individuals. We report three outbreaks of TBRF affecting 35 exposed military personnel, with an average recognized tick bite rate of approximately 50% and an attack rate of 25-50%. Of 10 TBRF cases, 20% had no evidence of tick bites and thus restriction of PEP administration to individuals with reco

Why is tick-borne encephalitis increasing? A review of the key factors causing the increasing incidence of human TBE in Sweden.

The highest annual incidence of human tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in Sweden ever recorded by the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control (SMI) occurred last year, 2011. The number of TBE cases recorded during 2012 up to 6th August 2012 indicates that the incidence for 2012 could exceed that of 2011. In this review of the ecology and epidemiology of TBE in Sweden our main aim is to analyse the possible reasons behind the gradually increasing incidence of human TBE during the last 20 years. The main TBE virus (TBEV) vector to humans in Sweden is the nymphal stage of the common tick

Soft Tick Relapsing Fever - United States, 2012-2021.

Soft tick relapsing fever (STRF) (also known as tickborne relapsing fever) is a rare infection caused by certain Borrelia spirochetes and transmitted to humans by soft-bodied Ornithodoros ticks. In the United States, acquisition of STRF is commonly associated with exposure to rustic cabins, camping, and caves. Antibiotic treatment is highly effective for STRF, but without timely treatment, STRF can result in severe complications, including death. No nationally standardized case definition for STRF exists; however, the disease is reportable in 12 states. This report summarizes demographic and c

Molecular detection and characterisation of Theileria parva and other Theileria species in cattle-associated ticks from southern Mozambique.

Tick-borne protozoa of the genus Theileria, particularly T. parva, represent a major challenge to cattle production in sub-Saharan Africa. Recent outbreaks clinically ascribable to East Coast fever (ECF) in Maputo Province, southern Mozambique, highlight the need to investigate the occurence of Theileria parva and other Theileria species in local tick populations. This study aimed to investigate the presence and molecular diversity of Theileria spp. in ixodid ticks collected from cattle in the buffer zone of Maputo National Park. Between May 2023 and February 2024, 881 adult ticks were collect
