Conversation effects on neural mechanisms underlying reaction time to visual events while viewing a driving scene: fMRI analysis and asynchrony model.

This neuroimaging study investigated the neural mechanisms of the effect of conversation on visual event detection during a driving-like scenario. The static load paradigm, established as predictive of visual reaction time in on-road driving, measured reaction times to visual events while subjects watched a real-world driving video. Behavioral testing with twenty-eight healthy volunteers determined the reaction time effects from overt and covert conversation tasks in this paradigm. Overt and covert conversation gave rise to longer visual event reaction times in the surrogate driving paradigm c

Intellectual and neuropsychological functions in young men with heavy and long-term patterns of drug abuse.

The authors attempted to determine the long-term effects of heavy drug abuse in 87 male prisoners. The sample was divided into the following groups: 1) nondrug users; 2) users of cannabis and hallucinogens; 3) users of cannabis, hallucinogens, and amphetamines; and 4) users of cannabis, hallucinogens, amphetamines, and opiates. Intellectual and neuropsychological tests sensitive to brain dysfunction revealed no intergroup differences. This finding casts some doubt on other reports suggesting that long-term drug abuse results in neuropsychological disorders. However, the authors caution that on

EHR perception and momentary well-being in oncology professionals.

BACKGROUND: Digital systems increasingly shape oncology workflows, yet their impact on professionals' momentary well-being remains poorly understood. Existing evidence relies on retrospective self-reports and lacks real-time, multimodal data. We examined whether momentary perception of an oncology electronic health record (EHR), differentiated into instrumental quality (e.g. usability) and noninstrumental quality (e.g. visual esthetics), relates to oncology professionals' concurrent psychophysiological well-being during routine clinical use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this multimodal ambulator

Viewpoint on Multisensory Body Perception and Body Illusions.

In this interview-based viewpoint article, Tobias Heed and Matthew Longo discuss research investigating the role of multisensory signals in shaping perception of one's own body. Drawing on both classic and recent studies, they suggest that a central insight is that body perception and the sense of self are constructed based on the integration of real-time signals from several sensory modalities. Classic findings such as the rubber hand and Pinocchio illusions have demonstrated the flexibility of body representations, while Bayesian frameworks have provided principled accounts of how signals fr

Quantifying expert resistance perception from vessel wall deformation in intracranial catheter navigation.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial catheter navigation relies on haptic cues interpreted as resistance. However, resistance perception is subjective, limiting standardized training. Prior studies measured forces at the proximal device end, but vessel-wall deformation during catheter advancement has not been synchronized with expert resistance judgment. In this feasibility study, outer-wall strain was used as a relative index of wall deformation in a tortuous vascular phantom. METHODS: Six board-certified neurointerventionalists, each performing one navigation trial, advanced a 0.021 inch microcatheter

Stronger effects of motion priors on sensitivity and bias in children.

According to Bayesian inference models, perception is affected by incoming input (i.e., likelihood) and by experience (i.e., priors). How perceptual inference is modified during development remains unclear. This gap is especially important when considering the two fundamental dimensions of perception-sensitivity and bias, which may evolve differently in children. In adults, a natural prior for cardinal directions affects both dimensions, resulting in lower motion direction thresholds and larger estimation biases for cardinal versus oblique directions. Here, we investigate how this natural prio

Preoperative MRI, audiovisual speech perception, and mood are associated with cochlear implant outcomes in adults with postlingual deafness.

Acquired severe to profound hearing loss is an increasingly challenging problem of our aging population. Cochlear implantation (CI) is the gold standard treatment for this advanced form of sensory deprivation. Despite the overall satisfactory results of CI, a substantial number of patients show unsatisfactory outcomes. This study aims to improve current predictive models of CI outcome by integrating preoperative MRI with behavioral data. We acquired a 3D T1 MRI to measure cortical thickness (CT) and volume using surface-based analysis and parcellation from the Brainnetome atlas. CI success at

Changes in BMI, lipid profile, disease perception, and quality of life among myocardial infarction patients participating in a 12-week green walking: A quasi-experimental study.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the 12-week intervention of green walking on BMI, blood lipids, disease perception, and quality of life among myocardial infarction patients. METHODS: In a quasi-experimental design, 60 participants (28 men, 32 women; aged 36-77 years) were assigned to intervention (green walk) or control (routine care) groups based on geographic convenience. The green walking group performed high-intensity interval walking for 50 min three times a week in a natural setting for 12 weeks. Adherence was monitored via attendance logs, with a mean of 91.7 % (SD 7.1 %). Primary outco

Work-Related Psychosocial Factors and Their Effects on Mental Workload Perception and Body Postures.

The perception of work is closely linked to body reactions that facilitate task performance. Previous studies have shown that psychosocial work factors significantly impact employee health on both psychological and physical levels, though their cross-sectional designs limit causal interpretations. In this study, participants performed sitting and standing tasks under four different levels of mental workload. The NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) assessed mental workload perception across six dimensions, while Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) scores evalu

Postural motion perception during vestibular stimulation depends on the motion perception threshold in persistent postural-perceptual dizziness.

Patients with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) perceive postural instability larger than the observed sway. It is unknown whether the concept of postural misperception prevails during vestibular stimulation and whether it may account for the unsteadiness patients complain during body movements. We tested the hypothesis of an abnormal sensory-perceptual scaling mechanism in PPPD by recording objective, perceived, and the reproduced postural sway under various standing conditions, modulating visual and proprioceptive input, by binaural galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). We rel

Combining Cardiovascular and Pupil Features Using k-Nearest Neighbor Classifiers to Assess Task Demand, Social Context, and Sentence Accuracy During Listening.

In daily life, both acoustic factors and social context can affect listening effort investment. In laboratory settings, information about listening effort has been deduced from pupil and cardiovascular responses independently. The extent to which these measures can jointly predict listening-related factors is unknown. Here we combined pupil and cardiovascular features to predict acoustic and contextual aspects of speech perception. Data were collected from 29 adults (mean  =  64.6 years, SD  =  9.2) with hearing loss. Participants performed a speech perception task at two individualized signal

Temporal cue based categorization and speech perception in noise among pediatric cochlear implant users.

OBJECTIVES: Voice onset time (VOT) has been identified as a potential temporal cue for predicting children's performance in speech-in-noise tasks, yet the relationship between these two factors has never been explored among children using CI. Hence, the present study aimed to explore the performance of children using CI on temporal cue-based syllable categorization test and speech perception in noise and examine the relationship between the two. METHODS: Temporal cue-based syllable categorization test was developed with the manipulation of /ba/ sound in 10 steps continuum with VOT varied betw

Predicting and coding sound into action translation in spinal cord injured people.

Motor activation in response to perception of action-related stimuli may depend on a resonance mechanism subserving action understanding. The extent to which this mechanism is innate or learned from sensorimotor experience is still unclear. Here, we recorded EEG while people with paraplegia or tetraplegia consequent to spinal cord injury (SCI) and healthy control participants were presented with action sounds produced by body parts (mouth, hands or feet) that were or were not affected by SCI. Non-action sounds were used as further control. We observed reduced brain activation in subjects affec

Understanding public perception of bra size.

BACKGROUND: Breast cup size is often used in conversations between patients and their surgeons to communicate about goals and expectations for postoperative results. Cup size, however, is a poorly defined concept. The goal of this study was to assess whether the perception of breast cup size is consistent in a general population of survey respondents. METHODS: A survey consisting of a demographic questionnaire, personal bra use questionnaire, and 27 de-identified preoperative images of patient's breasts was administered to 500 respondents using the Amazon MTurk platform. Survey respondents we

Cytoarchitectonically Defined Volumes of Early Extrastriate Visual Cortex in Unmedicated Adults With Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) misperceive that they have prominent defects in their appearance, resulting in preoccupations, time-consuming rituals, and distress. Previous neuroimaging studies have found abnormal activation patterns in the extrastriate visual cortex, which may underlie experiences of distorted perception of appearance. Correspondingly, we investigated gray matter volumes in individuals with BDD in the early extrastriate visual cortex using cytoarchitectonically defined maps that were previously derived from postmortem brains. METHODS: We analyzed

The associations of subjective appraisal of birth pain and provider-patient communication with postpartum-onset PTSD.

Childbirth-related PTSD is generally believed to result from multiple factors, including negative objective and subjective experiences and patient predisposing factors. There is conflicting evidence regarding whether severe childbirth pain affects development of PTSD. We hypothesize that a woman's retrospective subjective appraisal of birth pain is a greater predictor of postpartum-onset PTSD than medically documented measures of pain, and that a positive subjective experience communicating with medical providers during labor also reduces risk for postpartum-onset PTSD. A sample of 112 women,
