Evaluation of the effect of zoom function on lesion detection by soft-copy reading of screening mammograms.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of zooming in improving screen-reader performance in reporting digital mammograms. METHOD: Two experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, 5 readers were asked to report 59 two-view bilateral mammograms retrospectively with zooming function turned off. The second session was similar to the first one except that zooming was enabled. The task of readers was to assess if the mammograms were normal or abnormal and rate the confidence levels for each of the lesion they detected. The reader performances were evaluated via case sen

Inferences about the global scenario of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 infection using data mining of viral sequences.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is mainly associated with two diseases: tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM) and adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma. This retrovirus infects five-10 million individuals throughout the world. Previously, we developed a database that annotates sequence data from GenBank and the present study aimed to describe the clinical, molecular and epidemiological scenarios of HTLV-1 infection through the stored sequences in this database. A total of 2,545 registered complete and partial sequences of HTLV-1 were collected and 1,967

Landscape heritage objects' effect on driving: a combined driving simulator and questionnaire study.

According to the literature, landscape (panoramas, heritage objects e.g. landmarks) affects people in various ways. Data are primarily developed by asking people (interviews, photo sessions, focus groups) about their preferences, but to a lesser degree by measuring how the body reacts to such objects. Personal experience while driving a car through a landscape is even more rare. In this paper we study how different types of objects in the landscape affect drivers during their drive. A high-fidelity moving-base driving simulator was used to measure choice of speed and lateral position in combin

Gaze patterns predicting successful collision avoidance in patients with homonymous visual field defects.

Aim of the present study was to identify efficient compensatory gaze patterns applied by patients with homonymous visual field defects (HVFDs) under virtual reality (VR) conditions in a dynamic collision avoidance task. Thirty patients with HVFDs due to vascular brain lesions and 30 normal subjects performed a collision avoidance task with moving objects at an intersection under two difficulty levels. Based on their performance (i.e. the number of collisions), patients were assigned to either an "adequate" (HVFD(A)) or "inadequate" (HVFD(I)) subgroup by the median split method. Eye and head tr

Virtual reality as a tool for evaluation of repetitive rhythmic movements in the elderly and Parkinson's disease patients.

This work presents an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) system to evaluate, and potentially treat, the alterations in rhythmic hand movements seen in Parkinson's disease (PD) and the elderly (EC), by comparison with healthy young controls (YC). The system integrates the subjects into a VR environment by means of a Head Mounted Display, such that subjects perceive themselves in a virtual world consisting of a table within a room. In this experiment, subjects are presented in 1(st) person perspective, so that the avatar reproduces finger tapping movements performed by the subjects. The task, known

Safe Thinking and Affect Regulation (STAR): human immunodeficiency virus prevention in alternative/therapeutic schools.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of Safe Thinking and Affect Regulation (STAR), a 14-session HIV-prevention program for adolescents at alternative/therapeutic schools. Because these youth frequently have difficulties with emotions and cognitions, it was designed to improve sexuality-specific affect management and cognitive monitoring, as well as HIV-related knowledge and attitudes. It was hypothesized that STAR would lead to a decrease in sexual risk and improved HIV knowledge and attitudes. METHOD: Fourteen schools were randomly assigned by year either to the STAR intervention or a b

Macrophages.com: an on-line community resource for innate immunity research.

Macrophages play a major role in tissue remodelling during development, wound healing and tissue homeostasis, and are central to innate immunity and to the pathology of tissue injury and inflammation. Given this fundamental role in many aspects of biological function, an enormous wealth of information has accumulated on these fascinating cells in the literature and other public repositories. With the escalation of genome-scale data derived from macrophages and related haematopoietic cell types, there is a growing need for an integrated resource that seeks to compile, organise and analyse our c

[Theriaque: independent-drug database for good use of drugs by health practitioners].

Thériaque is a French-drug database, which was created 25 years ago by the centre national hospitalier d'information sur le médicament (CNHIM). The aim was to collect and diffuse independent information to healthcare professionals. From the beginning, the database had two objectives: information access and data input into prescription/dispensary software. Initially accessible via Minitel, then on CD-ROM, Thériaque has been integrated into hospital software. Since 1998, Thériaque is available on the Internet (www.theriaque.org). Today, the CNHIM develops Thériaque in a totally independent way.

A web-based program for informal caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease: an iterative user-centered design.

BACKGROUND: Web-based programs have been developed for informal caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease (PWAD). However, these programs can prove difficult to adopt, especially for older people, who are less familiar with the Internet than other populations. Despite the fundamental role of usability testing in promoting caregivers' correct use and adoption of these programs, to our knowledge, this is the first study describing this process before evaluating a program for caregivers of PWAD in a randomized clinical trial. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to describe the developm

Three-dimensional, automated, real-time video system for tracking limb motion in brain-machine interface studies.

Collection and analysis of limb kinematic data are essential components of the study of biological motion, including research into biomechanics, kinesiology, neurophysiology and brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). In particular, BMI research requires advanced, real-time systems capable of sampling limb kinematics with minimal contact to the subject's body. To answer this demand, we have developed an automated video tracking system for real-time tracking of multiple body parts in freely behaving primates. The system employs high-contrast markers painted on the animal's joints to continuously track

Clinical application of virtual endoscopy as a support system for endoscopic sinus surgery.

CONCLUSIONS: Computer processing of conventional CT images can provide virtual endoscopic images (VEIs). Surgeons observing these images feel as if they are observing the lesion using an endoscope. Simulation based on animated VEIs before endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is useful for the improvement of surgical safety and surgeons' education. Although the production of VEIs requires certain surgical experience, after the production of VEIs, surgeons can repeat simulation of a surgical procedure and have confidence in the actual operation. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the clinical application of

[Enophthalmos correction in complex orbital floor reconstruction : computer-assisted, intraoperative, non-contact, optical 3D support].

In the case of displacement of the globe such as enophthalmos induced by trauma, the patient is affected on both counts: function and aesthetics. To prevent double vision or conspicuous asymmetry, exact correction of the globe position is required. The aim of this case report is to demonstrate an intraoperative computer-assisted, non-contact, optical 3D procedure for identification of the globe position to aid in placing the eyeball in the position required in complex reconstruction of the orbital floor. A 33-year-old man presented with a sunken eye on the right side in the horizontal and vert

Testing the usability of a voice control system for assistive robotic arms in people with neurological conditions.

The acceptance and effective use of assistive robotic arms by people with neurological conditions strongly depend on the usability of the control interface. This study evaluated the usability of a voice control system for an assistive robotic arm in both healthy participants and individuals with neurological disorders, and compared its applicability and effectiveness with conventional joystick control. A voice control module based on automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech feedback was developed for a commercially available 6-degree-of-freedom assistive robotic arm. The system was impl

First Patient Study With Visual Biofeedback for Gating Delivery Efficiency Improvements on a 1.5 T MR-Linac.

PURPOSE: Breathing-induced motion of abdominothoracic lesions is an important source of uncertainty in radiation therapy. Beam gating improves delivery precision, but lengthens treatment delivery time, which can potentially be counteracted by biofeedback (BF). In this study, we investigated whether providing BF results in higher delivery efficiency and benefits the patient experience. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study was conducted on a 1.5 T MR-linac, equipped with cine magnetic resonance imaging-based motion monitoring for gated treatment delivery. BF was displayed on an MRI-compatible moni
