The success of Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can be assessed by a variety of parameters including clinical evaluation and polysomnography (PSG). Patients are often reluctant to undergo post-operative testing and insurance companies are often unwilling to reimburse for expensive overnight sleep studies. Due to the reality of these medical and economical problems, can a clinician be confident of the success of UPPP based solely on clinical evaluation? Sixty patients underwent UPPP for the treatment of OSA from July 1987 through June 1992. Patients treated wit

We describe our experience in the surgical treatment of 32 patients with severe snoring. In the first 16 patients we used the standard surgical procedure of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPP) but found this unsatisfactory because of its radical nature, complications and uncertain outcome. We therefore investigated the mechanics of snoring in the laboratory as a help in devising a more effective operation. These studies have shown that there are several methods by which snoring can be generated but that palatal flutter is probably the most important. The dominant parameters in the generation of fl

A study was conducted to assess oxygenation and respiratory changes on the first and second postoperative nights after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Twelve patients were postoperatively evaluated with 8-hour nocturnal polysomnography on four occasions: (1) PREOP--night before UPPP, (2) POPN1--first postoperative night, (3) POPN2--second postoperative night, and (4) 3MOS--3-month follow-up study. Results demonstrate that apnea index (AI) and respiratory disturbance index (RDI) were significantly improved at 3MOS from PREOP levels: AI (p less than 0.01) and

A study of 71 patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome was performed to evaluate the effectiveness, complications, and late sequelae of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. Postoperative immediate complications were of minor importance. In 96% of the patients, the snoring was improved; it was completely resolved in 48%. The postoperative apnea index remained pathologic in all patients who underwent postoperative polysomnography, although mild improvement was noted. Seventy-four percent of our patients felt a subjective postoperative improvement which was not always confirmed by the polysomnographi

Reports of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty complications were elicited from 72 locations in the United States. We asked physicians to report all complications that had occurred in the 9 years since the operation was introduced. Sixteen fatalities were reported; respiratory distress was the most common cause. Forty-six cases of nasopharyngeal stenosis were reported and 42 cases of palatal incompetence were reported. Hemorrhages and wound dehiscences were also reported. A retrospective analysis of the complications was made and diagnostic-therapeutic strategies are discussed with respect to prevention

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is a commonly used modality for surgical treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Although this procedure is thought to alter pharyngeal properties, its effect on pharyngeal mechanics has not been studied. The acoustic reflection technique was used to measure pharyngeal area at functional residual capacity and residual volume before and after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in eight patients referred because of loud snoring. We also calculated the lung volume dependence of pharyngeal area, defined as the percent change in pharyngeal area between functional residual

This study utilized computerized tomography (CT) to evaluate the effects of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) on upper airway (UA) dimensions. The objectives were to determine whether CT scan results would be useful in identifying UA characteristics predictive of a good surgical result as well as elucidating reasons for failure of this operative procedure. Twenty-three male patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) had CT scans and polysomnography performed before and after UPPP. Preoperatively, the apnea plus hypopnea index (AHI) was 64 +/- 6 per hour and the minimal UA cross-sectional area

Traditional uvulectomy, a widely practiced procedure in many parts of the world including Ethiopia, poses significant health risks to children under five. Efforts to combat its practice have been insufficient, with poor coordination among stakeholders exacerbating its impact. Current data on its public health significance is lacking. This study aims to assess the prevalence and determinants of traditional uvulectomy among children under five in Lemo District, Hadiya Zone, Central Ethiopia from February to May 2023. A community-based cross-sectional household survey was conducted from February

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a known risk factor for cardiac arrhythmia. The impact of surgical OSA treatment on the future occurrence of arrhythmic disease in young patients remains insufficiently studied.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine if surgical OSA treatment reduces future arrhythmic events (atrial fibrillation [AF], premature beats, ventricular arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac arrest [SCA]) and if these effects persist over time.
METHODS: This study was a retrospective cohort data analysis of the dataset from the Korean National Health Insurance Service system

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) suffer from a multitude of concurrent morbidities including cardiovascular disease (CVD). Limited data exists comparing long term cardiovascular disease (CVD) clinical outcomes for patients treated with surgical intervention versus continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The purpose of this study was to compare CVD outcomes at multiple time points comparing those treated with sleep surgery versus CPAP alone.
METHODS: A research database was used to assess outcomes: death, myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, heart failure,
