INTRODUCTION: Blood groups are inherited biological characteristics that do not change throughout life in healthy people. Blood groups represent antigens found on the surface of red blood cells. Kell blood group system consists of 31 antigens. Kell antigen (K) is present in 0.2% of the population (the rare blood group). Cellano antigen is present in more than 99% (the high-frequency antigen). These antigens have a distinct ability to cause an immune response in the people after blood transfusion or pregnancy who, otherwise, did not have them before.
CASE REPORT: This paper presents a blood do

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection occurs in 50% of the world's population and represents a major risk factor for chronic gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer and gastric cancer in developed and developing countries. The distribution of H. pylori virulence factors is diverse and varies geographically, such as the CagA and VacA genes, which have revealed association with disease status. Some findings show increased frequencies of these diseases in O Le (a-b +) and A Le (a-b +) blood type individuals, but other studies not found any relationship between these blood groups and H. pylori infecti

OBJECTIVES: We conducted a desensitization program in our center in patients undergoing kidney transplant for end-stage renal disease. These patients had a living-donor either ABO incompatible and/or human-leukocyte antigen-incompatible. The safety and efficacy of this program were evaluated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A pretransplant desensitization program relies on immunosuppressants and apheresis to remove detrimental antibodies. We chose immunoadsorption as the apheresis technique, and coupled this with hemodialysis in a tandem procedure.
RESULTS: We report on the efficacy of this new metho

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the association between the Fc-gamma receptor IIIA (FCGR3A) 158 polymorphism and clinical outcomes in kidney transplantation (KTx) patients. Specifically, we focused on late-onset neutropenia (LON) in ABO-incompatible (ABOi) or HLA-incompatible (HLAi) KTx recipients who underwent rituximab (RTx) desensitization therapy.
METHODS: FCGR3A 158F/V polymorphisms were identified in 85 ABOi or HLAi KTx recipients who underwent RTx desensitization at our institution between April 2008 and October 2021. We analyzed these polymorphism groups in relation to the

BACKGROUND: ABO blood group mismatch between donor and recipients is not considered as a major contraindication to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Nevertheless, there is still conflicting reports on the impact of ABO incompatibility on allo-HSCT outcomes, including the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), relapse of underlying disease, and patient survivals.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in 157 patients who underwent HSCT from October 1st 2019, to September 30th 2023, to determine the effect of ABO compatibility on allo-HSCT outcomes,

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation is the definitive management for severe acute liver failure refractory to supportive management, and end- stage chronic liver failure. Owing to a shortage of deceased liver donors, South Africa requires innovative techniques to broaden the donor pool.
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the outcomes of the Wits Transplant Unit ABO-incompatible liver transplant (ABOi-LT) programme.
METHODS: This retrospective record review compared all adult and paediatric patients receiving ABO-compatible (ABOc) and ABO-incompatible (ABOi) liver transplants from January 2014 to

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) remains the sole well-established curative option for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Nonmyeloablative conditioning has been used to improve outcomes and reduce toxicities in adult SCD patients. However, recipient-donor ABO incompatibility and alloimmunization may be significant impediments to successful outcomes of HSCT in SCD patients owing to risks of hemolysis, delayed engraftment, poor graft function, and graft failure (GF). Here we report our experience with allogeneic HCT for SCD and the effects of RBC group mismatch and alloimmuniz

A kidney transplant case with de novo donor-specific antibody showed monoclonal plasma cell infiltration into the graft with ABO incompatibility. Three years after transplantation, the patient's graft function suddenly deteriorated. Interstitial edema and the predominant infiltration of inflammatory plasma cells with kappa chain monoclonality were observed in biopsy specimens. The in situ hybridization of Epstein-Barr virus was negative and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder was not evident from radiological examinations. On laboratory examination, the patient had de novo donor-speci

BACKGROUND: ABO incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation is an important modality to facilitate living donor transplant for incompatible pairs. To date, reports of the outcomes from this practice in the United States have been limited to single-center studies.
METHODS: Using the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, we identified 738 patients who underwent live-donor ABOi kidney transplantation between January 1, 1995, and March 31, 2010. These were compared with matched controls that underwent ABO compatible live-donor kidney transplantation. Subgroup analyses among ABOi recipients

A 55-year-old-woman suffering from fluminant hepatitis owing to autoimmune hepatitis underwent ABO-incompatible liver transplantation (LRLD) of blood type A to B. In this study, we investigated whether a new immunosuppressive strategy by intraportal transfusion of donor-specific leukocytes (DSLT) separated from whole blood would yield immunological benefit in adult ABO-LRLD. The operative course was uneventful; she was discharged at 46 days postoperatively without humoral or cellular rejection. On immunologic analysis, 54.6% intrahepatic macrochimerism of donor type CD56+ T cells was recognize

Two hundred twenty-four patients with leukemia transplanted with an unrelated donor between 1991 and 2003 at the Karolinska University Hospital were analyzed according to association between graft failure and ABO, RhD, MNSs, and Kidd blood group antigen compatibility. Median age was 29 years (range: 0-55). Conditioning consisted of total-body irradiation or busulfan-based myeloablative conditioning. A bone marrow graft was given to 152 patients, and 72 patients received peripheral blood stem cells. Most patients received graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis with cyclosporine and MTX. Graft fa

We asked whether UDP glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) gene promoter polymorphism (Gilbert's syndrome) would increase hyperbilirubinaemia in direct Coombs' negative ABO-incompatible neonates, as seen in other combinations with this condition. 40 ABO-incompatible and 344 ABO-compatible controls had an allele frequency of 0.35 for the variant promoter gene. The incidence of hyperbilirubinaemia was significantly higher only in the former who were also homozygotes for the variant UGT promoter, compared with ABO-incompatible babies homozygous for the normal UGT promoter (43% vs 0, p=0.02), and with ABO

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to evaluate cause and outcome of biliary complications occurring after pediatric living related liver transplantation (LRLT).
METHODS: A database of 205 pediatric patients (71 male and 134 female) undergoing 208 LRLT from June 1990 to April 1996 was reviewed.
RESULTS: The overall incidence of bile duct complications was 13.9% (29 patients). There were 19 bile leaks, 7 anastomotic strictures, 8 intrahepatic biliary complications, and the bile duct was ligated inadvertently in 2 cases. Logistic regression analysis revealed hepatic artery thrombosis, ABO i

BACKGROUND: Despite great efforts to promote the donation of cadaveric organs, the number of organ transplantations in Japan is not increasing and a serious shortage of cadaveric organs exists. These circumstances have forced a widening of indications for kidney transplantation. For this purpose, ABO-incompatible living kidney transplantations (LKTs) have been performed. Although we have already reported the short-term results of ABO-incompatible LKT, there is no report of long-term results in such cases; anti-A and anti-B antibodies could cause antibody-induced chronic rejection and result in

Cryofiltration was applied to major ABO incompatible bone marrow transplant (BMT), renal transplant, and chronic renal rejection cases. The anti-ABO titers IgM and IgG pretreatment by cryofiltration were x64 and x8 in a major ABO incompatible BMT patient. After treatments, they were decreased to x16 and x2, respectively. BMT was performed successfully. In a case of ABO major incompatible renal transplant, anti-A-IgM before cryofiltration treatment was x128, and CH50 was 26.5. Three treatments were performed. As a result, the anti-A-IgM and CH50 levels were decreased to x4 and under 10. After r

Human endometrial glands synthesize and secrete a high molecular weight mucin-like glycoprotein in a menstrual cycle-dependent fashion. A novel moiety within this Golgi-associated glycoprotein is strongly reactive with IgG antibodies in numerous murine ascites, and has been termed MAG (mouse ascites Golgi). Immunohistochemical staining of 201 endometrial biopsies revealed the following patterns: MAG first appeared in the Golgi on cycle day 5, peaked on day 15, was present on the surface of the luminal epithelium between days 17 and 19, and was no longer detectable after day 19. MAG was also pr

The number of living donor transplants reported to the UNOS Scientific Renal Transplant Registry has increased from 1,810 in 1988 to 2,861 in 1994. Nearly all 250 United States transplant centers have reported living donor transplants. Graft survival rates were uniformly high for recipients of living donor transplants. One- and 5-year survival ranged from 95% and 84% for 3,653 HLA-identical sibling transplants to 89% and 69% for 1,981 offspring-to-parent transplants. Transplant half-lives ranged from 10 years for 360 transplants from nonspouse unrelated donors to 22 years for 3,653 transplants
