Is sport practice a risk factor for shoulder injuries in tetraplegic individuals?

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort. OBJECTIVES: To report the incidence rates of shoulder injuries diagnosed with magnetic resonance imag … : Tetraplegic athletes and sedentary individuals have a high incidence of supraspinatus tendinosis, bursitis and ACJ degeneration. Statistical analysis showed that there is a possible protective effect of sport in the development of shoulder injuries. Weak evidence was encountered for infraspinatus and subscapularis tendinopathy and muscle atrophy (P=0.09, …

Can We Measure the Heel Bump? Radiographic Evaluation of Haglund's Deformity.

Haglund's deformity is a symptomatic posterosuperior deformity of the heel. The lateral radiograph of the ankle will show a prominent, large … n position results in extra traction on the Achilles tendon and can eventually cause tendinitis and bursitis. Radiographic measurement should be used as an auxiliary tool. If the calcaneus tends to change position, it would be interesting to understand this process, which could eventually lead to improvement in the treatment of Haglund's deformity.

Osteoporosis: A factor on residual limb pain in traumatic trans-tibial amputations.

Residual limb pain is defined as a painful sensation or feeling from the remaining part of the leg. Aggressive bone edge, bone spur formation, neuroma, abscess or bursitis are common causes of residual limb pain. On the other hand, regional osteoporosis on femur and tibia is an inevitable consequence in patients with lower limb amputations. The etiology of bone loss is uncertain but it is likely to be a local phenomenon in lower limb amputees. Altered gait pattern, decreased weight load, disuse atrophy and lack of muscular action at the limb seem to be important causal factors in the developme…

Effects of the treatment of acute lumbar painful syndrome (ALPS) by "PRAXIS METHOD" during the period from 1996 to 2000.

Acute lumbar syndrome occurs suddenly and is accompanied with strong pain in the lower part of the back. The most frequent APLS causes are vertebral (herniation of intervertebral disc, subluxation of intervertebral disc, subluxation of intervertebral joint, fracture of vertebra--traumatic or pathological), or extravertebral (subluxation of sacroiliac joint, acute bursitis of iliolumbar segment, muscle injuries or injuries of tendo-ligamentous apparatus of lumbosacral region). The treatment of acute lumbar painful syndrome is classified as medical, alternatively medical, surgical and combined. …

Jumper's knee. Review of the literature.

Jumper's knee is an overuse disease. The initial subjective complaints are well-localized pain, usually occurring after physical activities and often at the lower pole of the patella. The diagnosis of jumper's knee is usually easily established after acquiring a detailed history and a carefully performed physical examination, but the lesion can be mistaken for other disorders or injuries, such as bursitis, meniscal injuries or chondromalacia (1) or other causes of the patellofemoral pain syndrome. Today ultrasonography is the method of choice for the evaluation of jumper's knee as it is both t…

Impaired dynamic balance and its association with shoulder external rotation in patients with frozen shoulder: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder (FS) causes shoulder pain and limited range of motion, leading to functional deficits such as impaired balance, but the factors associated with balance in FS and differences from healthy individuals remain unclear. This study aimed to compare balance performance between FS patients and healthy controls and identify variables associated with balance using regression analysis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 154 individuals aged 40–65, with 78 patients diagnosed with FS and 76 healthy controls. The static and dynamic balance of all participants was assess

Comparative effects of gong's mobilization and mobilization with movement in patients with adhesive capsulitis: a randomized clinical trial.

Adhesive Capsulitis results in a progressive contraction of the Glenohumeral joint capsule limiting active and passive range of motion, leading to functional disabilities. Joint mobilization plays a key role in the physical therapy treatment of Adhesive Capsulitis. A relatively new technique, Gong's Mobilization, has been introduced for the treatment of Adhesive Capsulitis. It is focused on the correction of positional faults through controlled dynamic motion of the Glenohumeral joint. The mainstay of this clinical trial is a comprehensive comparative evaluation of MWM with Gong's Mobilization

Intra-articular corticosteroid injection vs. suprascapular nerve block for adhesive capsulitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of level I randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular corticosteroid injection and suprascapular nerve block are both options for nonoperative management of adhesive capsulitis. While numerous studies support the benefits of steroid injections, the use of suprascapular nerve blocks is less established. Published randomized trials comparing steroid injections and suprascapular nerve blocks for managing adhesive capsulitis have reported mixed results. This study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of published level I studies to compare outcomes for patients with adhesive capsulitis following intra-art

Patient-reported allergies are associated with increased rate of postoperative stiffness after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

BACKGROUND: Several risk factors have been identified for the development of postoperative shoulder stiffness, and there has been increasing interest in orthopedic literature regarding patient-reported allergy (PRA) as an identifiable risk factor for adverse outcomes. The purpose of this study is to determine whether PRAs are associated with subsequent rates of diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis (AC) or return to the operating room for postoperative shoulder stiffness within 2 years after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR). METHODS: Current Procedural Terminology surgical billing codes wer

Evaluating anterior knee pain.

Musculoskeletal complaints account for about 20% to 30% of all primary care office visits; of these visits, discomfort in the knee, shoulder, and back are the most prevalent musculoskeletal symptoms. Having pain or dysfunction in the front part of the knee is a common presentation and reason for a patient to see a health care provider. There are a number of pathophysiological etiologies to anterior knee pain. This article describes some of the common and less common causes, and includes sections on diagnosis and treatment for each condition as well as key points.

The effect of shoulder manipulation on rotator cuff integrity.

The use of shoulder manipulation in the treatment of frozen shoulder remains controversial. Humeral fractures and neurological damage are the risks associated with the procedure. A concern of causing a rotator cuff tear exists but the incidence of iatrogenic rotator cuff tears is not reported. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of shoulder manipulation for frozen shoulder on the integrity of the rotator cuff. In a prospective study, 32 consecutive patients (33 shoulders) with the diagnosis of frozen shoulder underwent manipulation of the shoulder under anaesthesia (MUA), 18 fem
